With mixed martial arts becoming more and more mainstream every day, it is no surprise that people's interest in placing bets on MMA's most popular promotion is skyrocketing! Whether you are a serious gambler or a casual fan, putting some money on the line definitely adds some excitement to your fight night.
So how does UFC betting work? Betting on mixed martial arts events varies quite a bit when compared to baseball and football, where pointspreads are used. UFC betting is centered around the use of "money lines". For example, one sportsbook recently set the following odds for the Matt Hughes vs GSP #3 fight as follows:
Georges St. Pierre -200
Matt Hughes +160
In this bout, St. Pierre was the favorite with Hughes being the underdog. Because Georges is listed at -200, this means that you would have to bet $2 for every $1 you hope to win. So if you placed $200 on GSP, you would win $100. If he wound up losing, you would lose your $200. If you bet on $100 Hughes and he won the fight, you'd win $160. However, if you did actually bet $100 on him, you'd be losing your $100.
