Ratcliff-Horodecki Planned for WEC 51
Lightweight Ed Ratcliff has agreed to face Chris Horodecki at the not-yet-announced WEC 51 on Sept. 30 at the 1st Bank Center in Broomfield, Colo., his trainer Eric Del Fierro confirmed with Sherdog.com on Wednesday.
Ratcliff reported the bout -- originally scheduled for WEC 49 in June -- on his official Twitter account early Wednesday.
Jamie Varner vs. Donald Cerrone Rounds Out a Big WEC 51 Card
The long-awaited rematch between World Extreme Cagefighting rivals Jamie Varner and Donald Cerrone is set for WEC 51 on September 30, a major fight card that will demonstrate the WEC's ability to put on big events even as its top star, Urijah Faber, nurses a leg injury.
Varner announced the Cerrone rematch on his web site, and the addition of that fight not only makes WEC 51 one of the best fight cards of the rest of the year in MMA, it also provides some hints about where the WEC is headed for the rest of the year, and what a future WEC pay-per-view card might look like.
Here's how the five-fight WEC 51 card on Versus is shaping up:
Jose Aldo vs. Manvel Gamburyan
Miguel Torres vs. Charlie Valencia
George Roop vs. Chan Sung Jung
Mark Hominick vs. Leonard Garcia
Jamie Varner vs. Donald Cerrone
Varner wants Henderson, denies Cowboy fight
Varner's management team from KOReps.com issued a statement to MMAWeekly.com late Tuesday night, responding to the rumors about the fight with Cerrone.
"We have not been contacted in regards to this bout," his management team stated. "The fight between Kamal and Jamie was supposed to gain a shot at the title. The overwhelming majority of people seem to feel Jamie definitely won the fight. A title rematch with Ben in Arizona could be great for the fans and the WEC.
"For more information on an upcoming bout and injuries from the last fight please look for a video blog in the coming days on www.jamievarner.com."
WEC 51: Varner vs. Cerrone Rematch Possible (Updated)
Let the trash talking re-commence again. Donald Cerrone will finally get the opportunity to rematch his nemesis, Jamie Varner, at WEC 51, which is scheduled for the 1ST Bank Center in Broomfield, Colo., on Sept. 30. Sources say at least one fighter has verbally agreed to the fight.
UPDATE: False according to Varner. He claims he hasn't been offered the fight and wants WEC Lightweight Champion Benson Henderson instead.
Jorgensen Likely Gets Title Shot With WEC 50 Win
When WEC 50 was mapped out, the biggest question was who would face Dominick Cruz in his first title defense? The answer ultimately was Joseph Benavidez, who takes on the champion on Aug. 18. The person he got the nod over as top contender also returns on the same date, with a title shot of his own on the line. Scott Jorgensen faces Brad Pickett in a bantamweight bout on the main card of WEC 50, and according to his manager, the Idaho based fighter is the next contender in line for a shot at the belt if he wins. "If Scott wins this fight, he will get the next title shot for sure," Mike Roberts of MMA Inc. said on MMAWeekly Radio recently. WEC General Manager Reed Harris appeared on the radio show, stopping short of a guarantee, but said that all signs point towards a Jorgensen title shot if he comes away with a victory. "Assuming he gets a win, and depending on the performance, I think he's going to be right up there. I think I agree with you there," Harris commented about Jorgensen's title hopes.
Injury forces Urijah Faber out of WEC 50, Takeya Mizugaki pulled from card
Former WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber's bantamweight debut will have to wait, as an injury has forced "The California Kid" out of WEC 50.
Faber (23-4 MMA, 8-3 WEC) announced his withdrawal from the card on his Twitter account.
Faber was scheduled to face Takeya Mizugaki (13-4-2 MMA, 2-2 WEC) at the event, and MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has learned from sources close to the promotion that a replacement opponent will not be sought for the Japanese product.
Mark Hominick to face Leonard Garcia at WEC 51
A featherweight bout with explosive written all over it has been added to the upcoming WEC 51 card in September as Canadian Mark Hominick returns to action to face Leonard Garcia in a main card fight for the Colorado bound show.
The fight was confirmed to MMAWeekly.com by sources close to the bout on Thursday, stating the fighters have verbally agreed to the match-up.
Korean Zombie vs. George Roop on tap for WEC 51
World Extreme Cagefighting is expected to head to Broomfield, Colo., on Sept. 30. Expect a featherweight bout between Chan Sung Jung and George Roop to be on the card at the 1STBANK Center, according to MMAWeekly.com sources.
Both fighters faced Leonard Garcia in their most recent bouts. Jung lost a three-round war at WEC 48 that is already being considered one of the top fights of the year. Roop faired a little better, ending up in a draw with Garcia at WEC 47 earlier in the year.
WEC 49 Medical Suspensions
The Edmonton Combative Sports Director today announced the medical suspensions from WEC 49. Everyone who fought on the card was suspended but the vast majority received only 7 or 14 day suspensions for precautionary reasons. 7 fighters got 21 or 30 days with 2 fighters-Jamie Varner & Kamal Shalours-suspended indefinitely and must be cleared by doctors to return.
Roller vs. Pettis Set For WEC 50, #1 Contender's Bout?
As expected, Shane Roller & Anthony Pettis are set to meet at WEC 50. Officials confirmed the booking, which will be part of WEC 50's main card, during the WEC 49 broadcast. But with Jamie Varner vs. Kamal Shalrous, expected to determine a #1 contender to WEC Lightweight Champion Benson Henderson, ending in a draw, Pettis-Roller now could determine a #1 contender. Assuming, of course, they too don't go to a draw.
Kamal Shalrous Is The Toughest Guy You've Never Heard Of
His opponent at WEC 49, Jamie Varner, thinks so. "This is a really crazy fight because we're both wrestler/boxers, and I feel like where I lack, he exceeds, and where he lacks, I exceed. I feel like I'm definitely the better boxer and technical striker, but he hits really, really hard, but yet he's a better wrestler. He's nationally decorated, he's an Olympic alternate for Britain; I mean, he's no joke. Kamal Shalorus is the toughest guy you've never heard of."
Chris Horodecki faces WEC newcomer Danny Downes at Sunday's WEC 49 event
With Ed Ratcliff forced to bow out of this Sunday's WEC 49 event for undisclosed reasons, undefeated Roufusport fighter Danny "Boy" Downes (6-0 MMA, 0-0 WEC) has stepped up to face Chris Horodecki (13-2 MMA, 0-1 WEC).
WEC officials made the announcement late Tuesday night.
The Downes vs. Horodecki fight is expected to remain on the televised portion of the card
Caraway vs. Paixao Set For WEC 50
They didn't end up fighting in March, so they'll shoot for August instead. Bryan Caraway and Fredson Paixao are scheduled to meet in a featherweight bout on the upcoming WEC 50 card in Las Vegas on August 18. The two were set to square off in March, but a late injury to Caraway forced him off the card, and they will meet in August instead.
Ed Ratcliff Off WEC 49, Horodecki Faces Danny Downes
WEC announced late Tueday night that Ed Ratcliff is now off Sunday's WEC 49 for undisclosed reasons. He was to have faced Chris Horodecki. Danny Downes, who has won his first 6 career fights and trains with Anthony Pettis and Pat Barry among others, is the short-notice replacement. The fight likely will remain on the TV portion of the event.
WEC's Harris: Faber's drop to 135 his decision, move not necessarily permanent
World Extreme Cagefighting officials recently announced that former featherweight champion Urijah Faber (23-4-2 MMA, 8-3 WEC) would be making his 135-pound debut for the promotion in August in a featured WEC 50 matchup with Takeya Mizugaki (13-4-2 MMA, 2-2 WEC).
Some MMA observers speculated that Faber's April loss to Jose Aldo prompted WEC officials to recommend a drop in weight to the 5-foot-6 "California Kid."
This past weekend, at a media function promoting this Sunday's "WEC 49: Varner vs. Shalorus" event, Harris said Faber's decision to drop to bantamweight was his to make, and the switch isn't necessarily permanent.
Cruz vs Benavidez for WEC Bantamweight Title in August
Joseph Benavidez will not only get a crack at avenging the only loss of his career, but he'll also have the opportunity to take home the WEC bantamweight title as he takes on champion Dominick Cruz in the main event of the upcoming show on August 18.
The bout was confirmed to MMAWeekly.com by sources close to the fight on Tuesday evening, and was first reported by the Carmichael Dave show on Tuesday as well.
Urijah Faber vs. Takeya Mizugaki Rumored For WEC 50
Urijah Faber will now officially be a problem for the bantamweight division. The former WEC featherweight champion will make the move down to 135lbs for his next fight on August 18 as he faces Japanese fighter Takeya Mizugaki in the WEC. The bout was confirmed to MMAWeekly by sources close to the fight stating bout agreements have been issued at this point for the bantamweight showdown. The event hasn't been announced yet by WEC but will probably be in Las Vegas.
