Andrei Arlovski’s Management: Reported UFC 82 Fight Date not Confirmed
A report that former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski (11-5 MMA, 9-4 UFC) will return to the Octagon at March’s UFC 82 event appears to be a little premature. The Chicago Sun-Times today reported that Arlovski will return to the octagon for a March 1 fight at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio. However, representatives from Arlovski’s management today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that Arlovski hasn’t yet signed to fight at any event. With that said, though, Arlovski has just one fight remaining on his current deal, and he’s expected to fight before the contract expires on April 15. With the recent cancellation/rescheduling of a March 8 event in the U.K., that makes UFC 82 the most likely option for Arlovski’s return

MMA and boxing finally go head-to-head
While I know that most fans have given up the boxing vs. MMA debate, I don’t want to ignore the fact that the two most popular combat sports will be going head to head tomorrow for the first time. On the boxing side, Roy Jones Jr. (51-4, 38 KO) faces Felix Trinidad (42-2, 35 KO) in a 12-round light heavyweight bout. On the MMA (UFC) side, B.J. Penn (11-4-1) faces Joe Stevenson (28-7) for the Interim UFC lightweight title at UFC 80.

Letters of Interest
Mid-month always means two things: It's time to clean my gutters, and it's time to allow Sherdog.com readers their space to editorialize. Topics that respondents covered this month: Floyd Mayweather in MMA, worked fights and how to receive gainful employment from Jeff Sherwood. Enjoy.

Zuffa seeks retraction of statements by former UFC owner
Zuffa, the parent company of the UFC, has formally requested that CNBC air a retraction concerning “misstatements and inaccuracies” regarding the Zuffa Owners’ purchase of the UFC brand and Lorenzo Fertitta’s conduct as an NSAC commissioner. CNBC recently aired a documentary entitled “Ultimate Fighting: From Blood Sport to Big Time” featuring an interview with Robert Meyrowitz regarding his role as President of Semaphore Entertainment Group (SEG), predecessor-in-interest to the Ultimate Fighting Championship brand. When discussing SEG’s need to obtain Nevada State Athletic Commission approval for mixed martial arts prior to selling the brand to Zuffa, LLC in January 2001, Meyrowitz stated: “We went out there [to Nevada], it looked like we had the votes, we were told we did, and about midnight I got a phone call that one of the commissioners had changed his mind… and it turns out that commissioner was Lorenzo Fertitta, that he had changed his mind and that we wouldn’t be able to get approval.”

Gonzaga plots rebound strategy vs. Werdum
LUDLOW, Mass. - It's not hard to find Gabriel Gonzaga in this suburb with a large contingent of Portuguese and Brazilians near the Connecticut border. It could be that the beastly UFC heavyweight dwarfs most people on the street, or because he wears a hooded sweatshirt that reads "GONZAGA" on the front and bears the insignia of Gonzaga University. But even if you didn't spot "Napao" in person in Ludlow, you'd know where to find him. In a shop window facing the street next to his training haunt hangs a promotional poster for UFC 70, the event where Gonzaga famously defeated Croatian striker Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic in stunning fashion with a head kick. The poster hangs proudly alongside for-sale "Need 2 Bleed" brand fight gear and jiu-jitsu gis bearing the "Team Link" insignia.

Weighty Issues (Sherdog interview with GSP and his Manager)
In a world full of high-caliber mixed martial artists, most will concede that Georges St. Pierre (Pictures) is at or near the top of the list when it comes to talent and ability. Since his introduction to the world of professional MMA in 2002, the 26 year old from St. Isidore, Quebec, has run roughshod over a litany of fighters considered the cream of the crop. Not only has he beaten them, he's also made it look relatively easy. The first sign that alerted the international community that "Rush" was someone special was when he defeated Pete Spratt (Pictures) in 2003. St. Pierre was already popular around Montreal then, but Spratt was fresh off a win over Robbie Lawler (Pictures) at UFC 42 and was considered a heavy favorite. He drops a few bombshells in this one, sounds like the GSP/Anderson Silva fight could take place in the future, and how about seeing if Chuck can stuff his takedowns. Maybe a bit ambitious but interesting none the less.

Maturing Penn ready to claim crown
NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE, ENGLAND – For years, the word "if" has haunted B.J. Penn. He's heard it so much, it makes him want to scream in agony. If only he would train, the experts would say. If only he would take mixed martial arts seriously, they'd continue. If only he had the desire to be the best like a Randy Couture. Penn has heard it for years and run away from it, trying desperately to be his own man. He would do things his way, on his terms. And though doing that has resulted in a decent career, Penn is hardly a lock to be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame at this stage and there are many who look at him as a disappointment. There has been a lot posted on Penn with the fight coming up, but I thought this was a good interview.
