Jon Jones attributes success to sheltered upbringing
"My parents always kept us in the house. We weren't allowed to spend the night at other people's houses. We were sheltered kids. Now all the discipline that was instilled in me is coming out; I'm naturally doing all the right things."
Those Christian values were taught to Jones long before he could walk. Jones, like his brothers Arthur Jones Jr. (a defensive tackle with the Baltimore Ravens) and Chandler Jones (a defensive end at Syracuse), was introduced to biblical teachings as an infant.
Ricardo Almeida Will Choke Out Anyone From Matt Hughes To His Own Momma
Yes, he actually said that he would choke out his own mother. Just part of his "nothing personal, it's just business" take on his upcoming UFC 117 match with Hughes. "People say that he’s slowed down—and he’s had some hiccups here and there—but at welterweight he’s really only lost to Georges St-Pierre. His fight with Thiago Alves wasn’t really at welterweight. I’m watching video on this guy and watching his fights and I’m thinking like, what are all of these people watching. It’s MMA; when you win, you’re the greatest and when you lose, you’re done. It just so happens that he has beaten a couple of guys from my team—actually, I felt that Matt Serra won his fight, but hey, I’m biased. I was in the corner with Renzo [at UFC 112] and it was very emotional to see the way that it ended, so I asked Joe Silva for that fight right away and they gave me my wish. It’s just extra motivation, but whether I like or dislike Matt Hughes doesn’t really make a difference. If it was my mother in there, I’d be trying to choke her out and I expect nothing less from my opponent."
Baroni off 118, collarbone UPDATE: Dan Miller steps up
UFC welterweight Phil Baroni (13-12 MMA, 3-6 UFC) is out of next month's UFC 118 event and his fight with John Salter (5-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) due to a collarbone injury.
Baroni's agent, Ken Pavia of MMAAgents.com, today confirmed the news with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com).
"He suffered a minor injury that interrupted his preparations," Pavia said. "It's not going to be a long-term problem."
Thiago Silva Off UFC 117 (Updated)
Sources close to the fighter revealed today that Thiago Silva is now off UFC 117 due to an undisclosed injury. He was to have faced Tim Boetsch. No word yet on if UFC will be able to find a replacement in time, the event is only 11 days away.
Update: Another back injury.
UFC's "Bang" Ludwig recovering from broken leg, anticipates jump to welterweight
Veteran fighter Duane "Bang" Ludwig hit the bag today for the first time since he suffered a grisly broken leg in a first-round loss to fellow lightweight Darren Elkins at UFC on Versus 1.
Ludwig (19-11 MMA, 2-2 UFC) said his doctors recently cleared him to begin physical therapy and light training after removing a screw from his left fibula, which broke when Elkins took him down in the first round of the March 31 fight.
With his bone now "healed," the UFC fighter says a move to welterweight is imminent.
'Big' John McCarthy to Return to Octagon at UFC on Versus 2
Famed mixed martial arts referee "Big" John McCarthy will return to the UFC's octagon for the first time since 2007 when he oversees action during the upcoming UFC on Versus 2 show.
McCarthy's wife Elaine confirmed to MMA Fighting that he has been assigned by the California State Athletic Commission to officiate matches at the event, which takes place on Sunday at the San Diego Sports Arena in San Diego, Calif
Hopefully it's true. I have always liked John as a ref.
Despite Rumors, Erin Toughill Not Fighting At SF Houston
Here we possibly go again...a heavily-rumored Erin Toughill vs. Shana Olsen fight at Strikeforce Houston, which could've put Toughill in line for Cristiane Santos had she won, is not happening. Sources close to the promotion said that the cancellation arose when Toughill's ability to make 145 pounds was called into question. When multiple Internet reports cast doubt on the fight – citing issues over the bout's weight limit – both fighters went on the online offensive. Toughill this past week issued a post on her official Facebook page in which she conceded asking for a 150-pound catchweight limit while trashing Olsen. Shortly afterward, Olsen issued a terse response calling out the former "American Gladiators" star. Toughill's most recent professional bout was in May 2009, when she defeated Emily Thompson by unanimous decision. SF spokesman Mike Afromowitz declined to comment on Toughill's status with the promotion, and the fighter did not respond to a request today for comment. It is unknown whether Olsen will be rebooked for the Aug. 21 event.
Stanislav Nedkov vs. Steve Cantwell Slated For UFC 120
After being forced off UFC 117 with an undisclosed injury, Stanislav Nedkov is now scheduled to make his UFC debut against Steve Cantwell at UFC 120 in London. Verbal agreements are in place, paperwork pending. Nedkov's management team has never revealed details of the injury that forced him off 117.
How Many Wins Before Jon Jones Gets A Title Shot?
UFC UK President Marshall Zelaznik thinks that if Jones wins at UFC on Versus 2, maybe a year or so assuming he can get a couple more wins in a row. "Jon just burst onto the scene but has looked so exciting in all his fights. I'm not privy to the thinking of Dana [White] on the matter, but Jon Jones is certainly one of those guys with a lot of expectation who Dana and Joe [Silva] will have to nurture in the correct way. A victory over Vladimir Matyushenko would already put Jones at the top and closing in on a title shot. He would probably be two or three fights away, and if he keeps winning it will be very hard to keep him from walking through that Octagon door to a title shot. Jon's got a great temperament, nobody is really pissed off by him, and he has plenty of people wanting to work out the mystery of how to beat him."
Why Didn't Pat Barry Follow Cro Cop To The Ground After Flooring Him At UFC 115?
Because according to Barry it's kinda hard to do so with a broken hand. And it hurt. "The world couldn't see it because the camera wasn't close enough to my face, but as soon as I broke my hand – that was the second punch I landed that knocked him down – as soon as it happened, my lip was starting to tremble, and for two reasons. One, it hurt terribly. I never would have guessed that it was only one broken bone. I felt like all the bones in my hand were, like, entirely disintegrated.... We were on the ground in the second and he was on top of me punching me and he asked me what was wrong. He said, 'What's wrong with you? Why'd you stop fighting?' I told him, 'I broke my hand,' and he was like, 'Bullsh*t.' I said, 'No sir. My hand is broken. That hand is gone.'"
Tito Ortiz Loves Matt Hamill, Vows To Cave His Face In
Or as the old saying goes, "nothing personal. It's just business." That'll be the case when the TUF 3 coach & student face off at UFC 121, which Ortiz relunctantly has signed his contract for. "Matt, I’m sorry. Business is business, though.... It sucks, but this is business.... UFC made the decision, I was bummed, I love Matt, I think he’s an awesome athlete and he’s an awesome person. You won’t see any **** talking from me about Matt Hamill because I think he’s an awesome guy, but it’ll make it even a better fight when it comes October 23 when I cave his face in. No bad feelings. No bad emotions. Just punishment."
Gerald Harris To Replace Rivera Against Sakara At UFC 118
Jorge Rivera's loss will be Gerald Harris' gain. Harris has verbally agreed to step in for an injured Rivera to face Alessio Sakara at UFC 118. Paperwork pending. Harris fights for the fourth time in 2010. After debuting for the UFC with a "Knockout of the Night" win over John Salter in January, Harris has since earned victories over Mario Miranda and Dave Branch. The slam finish of Branch earlier this month earned Harris the evening's "Knockout of the Night" and was also featured on ESPN's SportsCenter as one of the evening's "top plays." It's not known if the fight will be a TV fight, the original plan was for Rivera-Sakara to air on UFC Prelims on Spike.
Lyoto Machida Vs. Rampage Jackson at UFC 123
Former light heavyweight champions Lyoto Machida and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson are expected to meet at an as of yet unannounced event in the fall, possibly in November.
The fight was confirmed to MMAWeekly.com as being in the works by sources close to the bout, and Jackson himself posted on his Twitter account that he was issued a bout agreement for a fight and was about to sign it late Tuesday evening.
UFC Continues Anti-Piracy Battle, Subpoenas Justin.tv & Ustream.tv
The world's largest pay-per-view content provider shows no signs of slowing its anti-piracy efforts. Ultimate Fighting Championship officials today announced they have subpoenaed Justin.tv and Ustream.tv – two sites with user-provided live video content – due to their broadcasts of illegally uploaded content, including the UFC's pay-per-view events. Zuffa LLC, the UFC's parent company, has served both sites subpoenas that demand they reveal the identities of users who uploaded UFC content. Today's release specifically points to one user from a single IP address who uploaded this year's UFC 108 and UFC 110 events, which drew 36,000 and 78,000 non-paying viewers, respectively. "I can't wait to go after the thieves that are stealing our content," UFC President Dana White stated. "This is a fight we will not lose." Today's release cites a section of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act that allows copyright owners to obtain subpoenas from a federal court that orders a service provider to disclose the identity of subscribers who allegedly engage in infringing activities. Due to the UFC's hefty PPV price tags, the promotion's content is a frequent target of privacy.
Tavares Now Off UFC On Versus 2
Thiago Tavares officially is now off next month's UFC on Versus 2 fight card. He was originally scheduled to face newcomer Willamy Friere (Chequerim) but Friere had to pull off due to injury, and UFC can't find a replacement so Tavares is now off as well. He'll be moved to a future card. This leaves 10 fights for the 8/1 event.
MM-Nay: Vancouver Bids MMA Sanctioning "Adieu"
Well, it was fun while it lasted. Councillors in the city of North Vancouver voted to disband the North Vancouver Athletic Commission on Monday after former chairman Mirko Mladenovic was impeached and replaced by city bureaucrat Dave Rudberg. UFC recently opened a corporate office in Canada with the intention of spreading the gospel to unregulated areas like Toronto. And while fan support is at an all-time high, especially with Canadian stars like Georges St. Pierre going mainstream, politicians are not impressed.
Jorge Rivera Off UFC 118
A broken arm has forced Jorge Rivera out of his UFC 118 bout with fellow middleweight Alessio Sakara. Rivera first announced the news via his Facebook page, though UFC officials have not removed the bout from the official fight card. With ample time, UFC officials likely will search for a replacement, though without Rivera (a cast member on "The Ultimate Fighter 4"), the bout potentially could lose its spot on Spike TV's "UFC Prelims" broadcast. Rivera hopes to return in September or October.
UPDATE: The replacement is Gerald Harris.
