Reed Harris: UFC-WEC Merger Rumors False
UFC and WEC are not merging anytime soon. When news of this happening broke over the weekend, WEC GM Reed Harris was quick to call this report "a lie" and suggested the outlet decided to "make up stories" to draw traffic to its Web site. Harris also reiterated there are on plans for a merger.
Evans-Silva Promoted To UFC 108 Main Event
Assuming they can avoid the injuries, illnesses, and apparent curses that have befelled the 3 matchups before them, Rashad Evans vs. Thiago Silva is the latest fight to be promoted to the main event for UFC 108. The 3 previous planned main events all had to be scrapped due to fighter injuries/illnesses.
Dana White: No Return in sight for Brock Lesnar
MANCHESTER, England -- Brock Lesnar will not be back in the UFC anytime soon, according to UFC president Dana White.
Speaking with the media after UFC 105, White indicated the heavyweight champion is very ill and will be out of action for the foreseeable future. He went on to state that an interim title match might need to be set up.
White did little to shed light on the specifics of Lesnar's condition, but he did say that the champion has been hospitalized.
"He's in a hospital up in North Dakota somewhere right now," said White. "He went to Canada and some bad stuff happened to him, so we've got to figure it out.
"He doesn't want to talk about it publicly, but he's in bad shape. He's not well and he's not going to be getting well anytime soon."
Lesnar pulled out of his Nov. 18 heavyweight title match with top contender Shane Carwin, and reports suggested he had swine flu. But when rumors began to circle about the rescheduled Jan. 2 date being in jeopardy, it was announced that Lesnar had mononucleosis and could be out even longer than originally thought.
Now, after White's comments, it is apparent that Lesnar is in more dire shape. He is not only suffering from mono but other ailments as well.
"He has other problems too," continued White, fielding a question about his diagnosis of mononucleosis. "He is not good. He is very, very sick and he's going to be out for a while."
White went on to state that the UFC would be doing everything in its power to help Lesnar.
"I am worried about it," said White of his biggest star's medical situation. "You know, I can't really talk about it right now, but he's in rough shape. He's in really bad shape … and we're going to have to do some stuff to take care of this guy. He is not well and he's not getting any better.
Lesnar's Condition "Nothing Life Threatening"
MMAWeekly.com spoke to a source in Lesnar’s camp on Saturday night that denied such characterizations, but indicated that there are some new issues to deal with.
“Nothing life threatening like the reports, just some complications with his illness and he had to be hospitalized for antibiotics.”
The extent and exact nature of Lesnar’s illness is still unclear. White indicated that he might even fly out to visit the champion to find out more about his condition and see what the promotion can do to help him get better.
Bisping: 'One of Those Shots Broke His Will'
"I noticed from my footage that he breaks mentally if the fight doesn’t go his way, and I could see it in his eyes when I hit him,” Bisping said. “One of those shots broke his will.”
It was an exercise in controlled aggression from Bisping, in which he demonstrated improvements in his grappling skills, highlighted by his containment of the experienced Kang from the bottom and the telling damage he managed to inflict from the top.
Vera Accepts Couture Decision
“I’m pissed, I’m really pissed, but the sport of MMA, she, MMA, is a b---h and if you let it go to the judges, you let it out of your hands, you know?” said Vera. “So, I’m going to take the blame for this loss. I’m going to man up.”
“I should have finished it. I had a couple of opportunities to during the fight that I should have finished it,” said Vera. “I’m super happy I got to fight Randy Couture, my hero, my legend, and let the rest of the light heavyweight division know that I’m going to whip you’re a-- if you get into the Octagon with me.”
UFC 105 fighter bonuses: Bisping, Kang, Siver and Etim each earn $40K
MANCHESTER, England – Main card fighters Michael Bisping and opponent Denis Kang and preliminary-card fighters Dennis Siver and Terry Etim each earned $40,000 fight night bonuses at UFC 105.
The event took place in front of a soldout crowd of 16,693 at the MEN Arena in Manchester, England. The event aired live in the U.K. on ESPN and via delay on Spike TV in the U.S.
Bisping and Kang each earned a "Fight of the Night" bonus, Siver got the "Knockout of the Night" award, and Etim picked up the "Submission of the Night" bonus check.
Lesnar Seriously Ill, Hospitalized in Canada After Collapse
MANCHESTER - UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar is seriously ill in hospital after collapsing in Canada, UFC president Dana White said Saturday.
"He's in rough shape, he's in really bad shape," White said Saturday after UFC 105.
"He is not well and he is not getting any better. . . . He's very, very sick and he's going to be out for a while. He's got a lot of problems."
Nogueira vs Cain off
The UFC's injury woes continue, and another main event has been scrapped.
A planned UFC 108 bout between heavyweight contenders Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (32-5-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) and Cain Velasquez (7-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) has been called off due to a severe staph infection currently affecting "Big Nog."
Dan Hardy looks to silence the critics with UFC 105 win over Mike Swick
In his brief UFC career, welterweight contender Dan Hardy (22-6 MMA, 3-0 UFC) has proven himself to be quite a polarizing figure.
Widely adored in his native U.K. for a flashy fighting style and lively pre-fight banter, Hardy is also viewed with disdain from many who believe he's too new in the organization to be vying for a shot at the 170-pound title.
"The Outlaw" hopes to use Saturday's "UFC 105: Couture vs. Vera" bout with Mike Swick (14-2 MMA, 9-1 UFC) in Manchester, England, as a chance to prove his doubters wrong.
"With all due respect to Mike, I don't think he's better at me in any area," Hardy said on a recent call promoting the event. "If anything, we're even.
"It's a very evenly matched fight, and I think that this is my chance to prove that to a lot of people that are doubting me."
Hardy is undefeated in three trips to the octagon, but two of those wins have come via split decision. Meanwhile, Swick is 9-1 in the UFC and is riding back-to-back TKO wins.
Conan guarantees: “Cane will stop Rogerio”
Coach and one of American Top Team’s leaders, Conan Silveira is anxious to the next fight of Luis “Banha” Cane on UFC. With 10 victories on his career, Cane will face Rogério “Minotouro”, who will debut on UFC. “It will be a very tough fight for both, high level and with a lot of intelligence”, analyzes, mourning that fact to face another Brazilian. “Unfortunately is that thing, we have to be professionals”.
*yes indeed..Lil Nog gonna get KO's*
Terry Etim just taking it as it comes
Lightweight Terry Etim, 24, is confident wherever his fight with Shannon Gugerty goes, but he’s been around long enough to know it will probably hit the mat.
Etim, a long and lanky Liverpool native, faces the Dean Lister brown belt on the undercard of UFC 105 in his seventh Octagon appearance.
Randy Couture says it's all about fun
Randy Couture is settled into that pre-fight groove he knows so well. The only difference this time around is the lack of title up for grabs.
At 46, Couture has contended for more UFC titles than any competitor in the promotion’s history. On Saturday, he faces Brandon Vera at UFC 105 in a non-title bout, his second since losing the heavyweight strap to Brock Lesnar at UFC 91 and fifth overall.
It’s Couture’s second re-invention as a light heavyweight after falling short to heavyweight Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 102. His first cut came in 2003, when he fought Chuck Liddell for the interim belt when then-champion Tito Ortiz was unable to defend his undisputed title.
Apologetic UFC 106 headliner Tito Ortiz missed "friend" Dana White
The fact that Tito Ortiz ultimately decided to return to the UFC wasn't all that surprising.
After all, the former champion and one-time biggest UFC star had come close to signing and even announced tentative deals with organizations ranging from Affliction Entertainment to EliteXC to the American Fight League over the past 15 months. None of those promotions, of course, is even promoting events these days.
Still, while few were shocked that Ortiz eventually announced his return to the UFC back in July, the fact that he had apparently made up with his sworn enemy – UFC president Dana White – did raise a few eyebrows.
Once upon a time, long before he orchestrated the purchase and took over control of the UFC with co-owners Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta, White managed Ortiz, and the duo were friendly – bosom buddies even.
Dana White predicts retired "Rampage" Jackson will be back in UFC
Despite the duo's public feud and the fighter's claims that he's entered retirement and is "done fighting," UFC president Dana White isn't closing the door on Quinton "Rampage" Jackson making a return to the octagon.
In fact, White expects him to return to the UFC soon.
Jackson, who's had an embarrassing run as a coach on the current 10th season of "The Ultimate Fighter" after rival coach Rashad Evans won seven of the eight opening-round matchups, announced his retirement on Sept. 22.
Prior to that declaration, though, Jackson accepted a role as B.A. Baracus, which was first played on the small screen by Mr. T, in an upcoming Hollywood remake of the 1980s action-adventure series. Filming for the role meant the highly anticipated (and thoroughly promoted) fight between Jackson and Evans was pulled from December's UFC 107 fight card in Memphis.
Gerald Harris To The List Of Veterans Applying For TUF
Put Gerald Harris’ name among the other established MMA veterans that want a shot to earn their way in to the Octagon by going through "The Ultimate Fighter" reality series. While other names being rumored to be applying for the next season of the show are coming off of disappointing stretches in their careers or periods of inactivity, Harris is one of the hottest middleweights in the sport at the moment.
UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre says he may take a crack at making the Canadian Olympic wrestling team for the 2012 Summer Games.
Abu Dhabi likely, Italy possible as UFC's European division continues growth
MANCHESTER, England – The UFC's U.K. Division President, Marshall Zelaznik, rattled off the mind-boggling statistics rather nonchalantly at Thursday's "UFC 105: Couture vs. Vera" pre-fight press conference.
"The fight will be seen in over 50 countries and territories live," Zelaznik said. "It will eventually be seen in 130 countries and territories. It will be available to 400 million homes around the world."
And as the UFC returns to the site of its first modern-era European event, the company has its eyes set on even further expansion, including Australia, Abu Dhabi and Italy.
Sherk-Oliveira Signed for UFC 108
Sean Sherk has signed on to face Rafaello Oliveira in a lightweight bout at UFC 108 on Jan. 2 in Las Vegas. Sherk, a former UFC lightweight champion, withdrew from his bout against Gleison Tibau at UFC 104 on Oct. 24 in Los Angeles with a “Grade II AC separation” shoulder injury. Sherk told Sherdog.com Thursday that the injury has rehabilitated well.
