Kenny Florian: BJ Penn is ‘human’ and ‘can be beaten’
(mmamania.com)

With B.J., you have to keep him motivated. Hopefully after that performance he does see me as a threat and sees it as a potential great fight. I wanted to let him know that I was there and that’s how I feel about him…. I know I have a lot to learn and a lot to still improve upon, but at the end of the day, B.J. Penn is human. If he’s human, that means he can be beaten and, with the trainers that I have, I feel that anyone can be beat. I know that I’ll figure out a way to do it.”
Kenny Florian talks about the reason he called out UFC Lightweight Champion BJ Penn during his post-fight comments after defeating Joe Stevenson at UFC 91: “Couture vs. Lesnar” via first round submission (rear naked choke) to earn the title shot. It was all to keep “The Prodigy” interested in the challenges that still remain in the 155-pound class — Penn is set to fight Georges St. Pierre at UFC 94 on January 31 for his 170-pound belt. If Penn sticks around the division Florian will be his next opponent, which would also serve as Florian’s second crack at the crown — he dropped a unanimous decision to Sean Sherk in 2006 for the vacant division title. Penn also already has four defeats on his professional record (Jens Pulver, Lyoto Machida, Matt Hughes and Georges St. Pierre).

'Conspiracy' Pits Davis Against Lytle @ UFC 93
(mmaweekly.com)
It’s not much of a secret anymore that Marcus Davis has great hands. The former boxer developed a respectable submission game to keep up with the UFC Joneses, and in doing so, has been more able to use his fighting base in the still-young sport. With questions of his viability as a complete fighter long behind, Davis has found himself looking for fights that will cement his legacy as a boxer who found greatness in MMA.

Exclusive: Dan Hardy's first interview on Markham fight
(mmabay.co.uk)
MMABAY - How do you feel about the fight between you and Rory Markham? Hardy - I'm excited! Its not only a great fight for me but a great fight for the fans too. Markham is an exciting guy to watch, he always comes to fight and has some impressive knockouts on his record. We are similar fighters in the fact that we like to stand and trade punches and neither of us will be willing to back down. I was at his debut back in July and I remember thinking at the time that I would like to fight him, now I get a chance to do it infront of a British crowd.

GSP vs. Anderson Silva Possible
(dreamfighters.com)
If GSP is victorious against BJ Penn at UFC 94, he could be facing Anderson Silva, as mentioned by Dana White, President of the UFC. In a interview a few months back with UFC President Dana White, Dana commented on the possibility of GSP facing Anderson Silva. “(Anderson Silva) could meet Georges St. Pierre at a catch weight,” said White. “This guy wants to challenge himself. He’d probably fight at 145 pounds if we asked him to.”

Dan Hardy vs. Rory Markham not official for UFC 95
(fiveouncesofpain.com)
A rumored welterweight matchup between Dan Hardy and Rory Markham that would place at UFC 95 at the O2 Arena in London on Feb. 17 has gained a lot of traction on various Internet news outlets over the course of the last week. Despite the high level of speculation surrounding the proposed matchup, FiveOuncesOfPain.com learned Friday evening that the fight is not yet official. A source close to Markham confirmed to Five Ounces of Pain that a bout with Hardy was indeed offered and that Markham signed the bout agreement. However, the source added that they were informed by the UFC that the bout wouldn’t be official until Hardy signed and that an executed agreement for the fight has not been returned. Markham’s camp is not entirely certain that Hardy will sign the contract.

(mmaweekly.com)
Steve Steinbeiss has become the latest of the "bigger" WEC fighters to make the move from the to-be-defunct WEC Light Heavyweight division to UFC. He'll fight out the remainder of his WEC deal in UFC, which currently means he has 3 fights left on his original 4-fight deal. His only WEC fight to date was a split decision loss to Carmelo Marrero at WEC 36.

New Interview With GSP
(fiveouncesofpain.com)
Brock Lesnar versus Randy Couture was the “biggest fight ever” according to UFC President Dana White. It’s now old news, failing to become the biggest PPV extravaganza of all time, but still clearly going to end 2008 as the best box office fight of the year. In 2009, Zuffa looks to draw big numbers early, pitting B.J. Penn against Georges St. Pierre in a battle of champions at UFC 94 on January 31, 2009.

Mike Swick guaranteeing a finish over Jonathan Goulet at “UFC Fight for the Troops”
(fiveouncesofpain.com)
Mike Swick has come a long way since the days he used to fight in the light heavyweight division on the very first season of The Ultimate Fighter. Upon leaving the house Swick immediately dropped down to middleweight division where he reeled off five straight victories and looked to be on his way to a title shot. That was until he ran into a roadblock in the form of top ranked middleweight Yushin Okami

Report: UFC Signs Major German TV Deal
(bloodyelbow.com)
The UFC has apparently completed a TV deal they have been working on for a long time in Germany, according to a German blogger at Free Fight Videos, who cites a report in by the Spiegel:

After almost 5 years since its last appearance on German TV, the Ultimate Fighting Champion has finalized a deal with one of Germany’s biggest broadcasters. According to a report by the Spiegel (via Baz Online) starting from 2009 the UFC will air its popular reality TV show “The Ultimate Fighter” on German broadcaster “Pro Sieben”. ProSieben is the second biggest privately owned TV company in Germany and consistently of one the highest rating broadcasters on German TV. The channel is part of the ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG group one of Europe’s biggest media conglomerates. Pro Sieben realise heavily on foreign programming especially content form the US. Its the is the German broadcaster of numerous popular foreign shows including Desperate Housewives, ER, Grey's Anatomy, The Simpsons and Two and a Half Men. Its also the home of the German version of American Idol. The popular channel is distributed in several other counties throughout Central and Eastern Europe including Austria and Switzerland.
This is a pretty big coup, as it looked like they'd have to do their first show without any major TV exposure.

Alistair Overeem: “I do see myself defeating Brock Lesnar”
(fiveouncesofpain.com)
Alistair Overeem has reinvented himself since making the move up to the heavyweight division. The Dutch fighter has gone undefeated in his last five fights while obtaining the Strikeforce heavyweight championship along the way. Big wins over big names have turned many heads and have many mentioning Overeem’s name when discussing the sports top heavyweights, as both UFC veteran Paul Buentello and former PRIDE veteran Mark Hunt have both fallen victim to “The Demolition Man” in recent outings.

Penn: Realising The Dream, Building A Legend
(mmaweekly.com)
"I run as hard as I can. I lift as much weights as I can. I do as much jiu-jitsu as I can. Why not take this as far as I can? You know? Just see how far you can go, for once in your life. Step up and see what you really could have done. That's what I want to do." That is how B.J. Penn thinks. He doesn't dwell on wins and losses or how many championship belts collect dust on his mantle or how many fancy cars he can park in the garage. He operates on a different plane, a plane reserved for icons and legends. "I want to leave a mark in this sport.

United: TUF1 Fraternity
(mmaweekly.com)
The Ultimate Fighting Championship may have made the biggest gamble in the history of promotion in late 2004 with the decision to put 16 fighters in a house in Las Vegas, have them all compete for a chance to fight in the UFC, and film it. Looking back, the first season of "The Ultimate Fighter" may still be the single biggest reason why mixed martial arts has hit the heights that it has over the past few years, and many of the fighters on that inaugural season have tasted great success. It seems all of them still feel a bond from that experience. While almost every season of the reality show produces future friends, teammates, and training partners, the debut season of The Ultimate Fighter seemed to make the fighters involved form into some kind of fraternity. To this day, they always seem to pull for one another, even when it looked like after the show they wanted to rip each other's heads off.

Marquardt Wants TUF Coaching Spot, Big Fights
(sherdog.com)
“Being a coach on ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ is something I’d love to do,” Marquardt (27-8-2) told Sherdog.com. “I asked the UFC if I could do it, but I’m not sure who they’re considering. I think it would be good to be a part of it.” Marquardt’s manager, Dean Albrecht, makes a case that Marquardt would be a perfect fit as a coach. “Nate’s funny and has a good personality,” said Albrecht. “He’s got good wrestling skills, excellent standup and is a black belt (in jiu-jitsu and Brazilian jiu-jitsu).

Palhares Vs Horn @ UFC 93
(intheguard.tv)
Yesterday the wikipedia was informing one more rumored match into the possible line-up of UFC 93 scheduled for January 17 in Dublin, Ireland. The fight in question would put super veteran, Jeremy Horn in front of BTT's rising star Rousimar Palhares. However, like everybody knows, wikipedia isn't necessesairly a trustworthy source. But even though the meeting sounded like a rumor, something real could exist behind this. A few callings were done and even through no official words came from Zuffa, we reached from sources close to the Brazilian that the fight is signed, confirmed and will be part of the first UFC of 2009. MMA Weekly also have it listed on their page

UFC 91 Does Big PPV Numbers
(bloodyelbow.com)
In the Wrestling Observer Newsletter this week, Dave Meltzer has a short report on early numbers for the UFC 91 show. He reports that it looks to have beaten UFC 61 (Ortiz v. Shamrock) and came up just below UFC 66 (Ortiz vs. Liddell) in some areas. I've received two preliminary estimates that put it in the 800,000-850,000 range. If those numbers hold up, it will be the second biggest UFC buyrate ever. It did not do the 1.2 million that White predicted, but I never believed this show could break a million without an incredible promotional push. It didn't get that push, but still apparently did great business. Internal estimates were in the 800-900 range, the 1.2 million was public bluster to get ESPN to cover it. The tactic worked, but I get the feeling that scam will only work once. Before this show, Couture's highest buyrate was against Tim Sylvia for his 2007 return that did 540,000 buys.
