Claude Patrick will take on James Head UFC 149 in Calgary
Another Canadian has been added to UFC 149 in Calgary as Toronto's Claude Patrick will take on James Head in a welterweight bout.
The UFC told Sportsnet Tuesday that verbal agreements were in place for the fight, which will appear on the undercard of the July 21 event at the Scotiabank Saddledome, the UFC's first show in Alberta.
Patrick (14-2) is coming off a controversial split-decision loss to Brian Ebersole at UFC 140 in Toronto in December. The defeat snapped a 13-fight win streak, including his first three appearance in the Octagon
Showtime Pettis “I want to fight Nate Diaz!”
I was fortunate enough to catch up with UFC lightweight top contender Anthony ‘Showtime’ Pettis this weekend. Pettis, who is coming off a big victory over Joe Lauzon at UFC 144, is looking to prove that he is the real #1 contender in the lightweight division. Here is our conversation:
NSAC issues one-year suspension, fine to Nick Diaz
In a hearing that stretched over three hours and two rooms within the Grant Sawyer Office Building in Las Vegas, the Nevada State Athletic Commission unanimously voted today to suspend Nick Diaz for his failed drug test at UFC 143.
Diaz's suspension runs 12 months from the date of the event, which took place Feb. 4. Additionally, he has been fined $60,000, or 30 percent of his $200,000 show purse.
Diaz, who was present at hearing, must also submit a clean drug test in order to be licensed again in Nevada.
NSAC SUSPENDS DIAZ ONE YEAR FOR POSITIVE TEST
Nick Diaz was suspended for one year by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for his positive test for marijuana metabolites following his loss to Carlos Condit at UFC 143 in Las Vegas.
The UFC welterweight, who was already under temporary suspension since the failed drug test, was also fined $79,500 (30 per cent of his purse).
Appearing before the commission Monday, Diaz’s lawyer Ross Goodman argued that the NSAC could not suspend him for violating its policies since marijuana metabolites do not constitute a prohibited substance.
Diaz, who has a medical exemption to use marijuana in his home state of California, has been taking it to help deal with ADHD.
Chael Sonnen was granted a therapeutic use exemption for testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) by the Nevada Athletic Commission
Chael Sonnen was granted a therapeutic use exemption for testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) by the Nevada Athletic Commission on Monday, clearing the way for his UFC 148 showdown with Anderson Silva in Las Vegas on July 7.
The exemption came with a few conditions, however. Sonnen must adhere to dosage restrictions as determined by NAC Executive Director Keith Kizer in the days leading up to the event, and the middleweight title challenger must also submit to a post-fight blood test at his expense the morning after UFC 148. Additionally, the commission has requested that Sonnen submit copies of his therapeutic exemption applications from Texas and Illinois for further review.
Sonnen was suspended for one year by the California State Athletic Commission following his loss to Silva at UFC 117 in August 2010, when a post-fight drug test revealed that Sonnen had elevated testosterone levels. The Oregonian returned to action last October, scoring a first-round submission over Brian Stann at UFC 136 in Houston. Most recently, he defeated Michael Bisping at UFC on Fox 2 on Jan. 28 in Chicago.
UFC Champ Jon Jones Posts Facebook Statement On DUI Arrest
"Man I haven't added anyone new to my Facebook page in like three years and right now I'm so glad that I haven't. It has literally been sickening to have so many people try to kick me while I'm down. At the same time, I totally understand, I gave them the leeway to. I screwed up, big time. Just needed to say thank you to all you guys for being amazing friends/supporters.
Always having to deal with so many critics, haters and fickle mma fans, I almost forgot how strong of a home base I had (607 and people that knew me before I was a champion fighter). Although the hell that will come with this hasn't even started yet, I want you guys to know how much better you've all made me feel, not only about this situation but about life, everything. It's good to feel that people are there and care. With that being said, I felt I should apologize to you first.
I'm truly sorry to those of you that I may have embarrassed in any way, to those of you with kids that I may have let down. I will prove to them as well as to myself, that no matter what is happening in life, we can always work our way back and make things even better than before. Reading you guys uplifting comments was a great reminder for me to not give up on who I am or all the hateful people. I'm not gonna allow this situation to outweigh the positive. I love you guys right back and I promise to make things right. PS sorry about the terrible grammar :)"
UFC on FOX 4: Manny Gamburyan vs Michihiro Omigawa booked for Aug. 4 in Los Angeles
A featherweight fracas has been added to the UFC on Fox 4: "Stann vs. Lombard" event on Aug. 4, 2012, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, as the struggling Manny Gamburyan will take on Michihiro Omigawa.
MMAFighting.com brought word of the pending bout last night.
Gamburyan is likely on his last legs with the world's largest fight promotion, as he's lost both of his two fights since rejoining the UFC. Actually, dating back to his previous run with the promotion, "The Anvil" has won inside the Octagon in four fights. That's an impressive run of futility.
He'll try to turn the tide against Omigawa, who has struggled nearly as bad losing three of his last four. There's a widely panned decision in there that didn't go his way but a loss is a loss is a loss. So essentially, this is a loser leaves town match.

Ex-MMA Fighter Threatens To Kill UFC Prez
UFC Prez Dana White is on the receiving end of some terrifying death threats from an ex-MMA fighter who says he plans to "shoot [Dana] right in the head" -- and now cops are on the case.
It's unclear what started the beef, but the wannabe fighter -- Dan Quinn -- has gone off the hinges, leaving voicemail messages threatening to blow up Dana's offices and put a bullet in the back of his head.
Quinn's fighting career spanned nine years from 2001-2010. He never fought in the UFC, but did face off against a couple of future UFC fighters, including 2004 heavyweight champ Frank Mir (Quinn got beat).
Quinn has made rambling threats against White for several years on YouTube, but they escalated recently after Quinn somehow got Dana's private work number and left chilling messages...
Renan Barao to fight Urijah Faber at UFC 148 for interim bantamweight title
Urijah Faber (26-5 MMA, 2-1 UFC) has his opponent for UFC 148's co-headliner and interim-bantamweight-title fight.
During tonight's new episode of "The Ultimate Fighter: Live," UFC president Dana White confirmed surging 135-pound contender Renan Barao (28-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) has gotten the slot.
The fight was booked after reigning champion Dominick Cruz (19-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) was forced out of a rubber match with Faber following a recent ACL injury.
Cruz and Faber currently are coaches on "TUF: Live," and their season-ending fight was slated for UFC 148, which takes place July 7 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Faber vs. Barao, which will be contested over five rounds, is the pay-per-view co-headliner behind the night's main event of middleweight champion Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen.
Barao initially was slated to fight Ivan Menjivar (24-8 MMA, 3-0 UFC) at UFC 148. Menjivar's next move is at this point unknown.
Cody McKenzie vs Chad Mendes meet at UFC 148 at Featherweight
Fresh off of a victory on Tuesday night, Cody McKenzie has decided to drop down to featherweight and face Chad Mendes at UFC 148 in July. UFC officials on Friday announced verbal agreements are in place for the fight.
McKenzie (12-2) emerged from season 12 of The Ultimate Fighter unscathed, holding an undefeated professional record following the show’s finale. He then dropped back-to-back bouts to Yves Edwards and Vagner Rocha, before submitting newcomer Marcus LeVesseur at Tuesday night’s UFC on Fuel TV 3.
Even with the victory, however, McKenzie has decided it’s time to drop down from lightweight to the 145-pound division.
Michael McDonald Injured, Out Of UFC Interim Bantamweight Title Picture
A favorite to get a shot against Urijah Faber for the interim UFC Bantamweight title, Michael McDonald will not get his opportunity in July as a hand injury has put him on the shelf.
Wrestling Observer founder Dave Meltzer reported in his Thursday update that UFC president Dana White said McDonald's hand was injured but didn't go into details about the severity or how long he would be out for. Meltzer added that one source told him that McDonald was the favorite to get the nod against Faber.
As of this writing, McDonald had not acknowledged the injury on Twitter. Faber's opponent will be announced on Friday night's edition of The Ultimate Fighter Live. He was to fight UFC Bantamweight Champion Dominick Cruz in the main event of UFC 148 in Las Vegas on July 7, but Cruz suffered a torn ACL in training and will be out indefinitely.

BJ Penn rejects Josh Koscheck fight and insists he's 'not coming back anytime soon'
I've got bad news for all you B.J. Penn fans.
It looks like your Hawaiian hero won't be coming out of his self-imposed retirement to fight fellow welterweight veteran Josh Koscheck, despite getting called out by "Kos" earlier in the day on Twitter. In fact, he may not be coming back at all.
Live by the tweet, die by the tweet.
@joshkoscheck I know it costs a lot of money to live that lavish lifestyle, big house, fast cars & you need big fights but sorry I’m not coming back anytime soon!
And there you have it.
Bantamweight Michael McDonald auctions off UFC 145-worn fight shorts for charity
"Mayday" recently placed up for auction the actual shorts he wore during his UFC 145 knockout of former WEC champ Miguel Torres.
Interested buyers can bid on the shorts at ebay.com, and McDonald has committed to giving 100 percent of the proceeds to Crossover International, Inc., a 501.3c organization "that promotes using sports to spread God’s word."
McDonald is also willing to autograph or personalize the shorts if the winning bidder so desires.
"The reason I'm choosing to support Crossover International is because
we share a common cause, which is something I find incredibly valuable
and close to my heart," McDonald told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). "Going out into the world, spreading the good news of Jesus Christ and shining a light in a place that very few lights are shone, Crossover uses the sport of basketball to reach kids and show them that being a Christian doesn't mean that you can't
have fun by bringing the community together and putting the word of God
into kid's lives.
"If just one kid's life could be changed for the better, then it would all be worth it to me. That is why we are going to do our best to help Crossover International in their cause."
