B.J. Penn: I'd Make Joe Lauzon Fight Me
If Joe Lauzon (16-3 MMA, 3-0 UFC) beats Kenny Florian in their UFC Fight Night 13 main event, and if B.J. Penn (12-4-1 MMA, 8-3-1 UFC) successfully defends his title against Sean Sherk at UFC 83, a Lauzon-Penn title fight could be on the horizon -- according to Penn, anyway. Although the two training partners would seem unlikely opponents, Penn says he would make Lauzon fight him so the youngster could "realize his dreams." We started chatting about what he thought of Joe's upcoming fight; BJ feels that Joe has a very good chance of winning his fight against Kenny Florian for Ultimate Fight Night in Broomfield, CO. "If Joe does win, and I win the belt, there's a good chance that we may have to fight each other." I quickly responded, "But you guys wouldn't do that, would you?" BJ said, "He would have to fight me if he wants to be the champion. I want him to realize his dreams; I would make him fight me."

UFC 84: Shane Carwin vs. Christian Wellisch
Shane Carwin (8-0) will make his Octagon debut against Christian Wellisch (8-3) at UFC 84: “Ill Will” at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on May 24, according to multiple reports. Carwin — a Western State College NCAA Division II national wrestling champion and two-time football All-American — is a top heavyweight prospect who has gone undefeated in smaller promotions with the guidance of veterans such as Ron Waterman and Nate Marquardt. He’s an extremely athletic fighter who has drawn comparisons to Brock Lesnar. Carwin, however, has more mixed martial arts experience. In fact, he has finished all of his opponents in the first round with a mix of knockouts and submissions. If he can replicate those results inside the Octagon … watch out. Carwin appears to have some serious potential to make waves in a division that sorely needs it. Wellisch is a law school student who has won two of his three fights with the UFC. He most recently submitted Scott Junk with a heel hook at UFC 76: “Knockout” back in September 2007. He also earned a unanimous decision over Anthony Perosh at UFC 66: “Liddell vs. Ortiz II” back in December 2006. Here is a HighLight of Shane Carwin

Michael Bisping doesn’t deserve fight with Anderson Silva … yet

“It’s flattering to hear some of the fans on Mixed Martial Arts forums think I might be able to beat Anderson Silva…it’s nice to hear comments like that. But right now, if I’m being brutally honest, I don’t think I deserve to be spoken about in those terms. As I’ve said before, I’ve got to establish myself at middleweight. I’m coming off a reasonably successful career at light heavyweight so I suppose that brings some momentum with it but I think middleweight suits me better. I’m performing so much better in the gym. I’m faster, I’m stronger and I feel great. Everyone around me has commented on it – I thought I might have lost a bit of strength moving down but that isn’t the case. My boxing coach tells me I’m hitting a lot harder and my combinations are a lot faster and I’m eager to see what I can do at this weight. I think I can go a long way, but let’s see.”.
Note that this is the same publication that recently attributed comments to “The Count” that “insisted” he could defeat UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva. These latest remarks appear to make much more sense … especially since Bisping is untested at 185 pounds. He makes his middleweight debut against Charles McCarthy at UFC 83: “Serra vs. St. Pierre 2? at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, on April 19.

Silva boxing Jones a step closer to reality?
Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight titleholder Anderson Silva recently indicated that he would like to challenge Roy Jones, Jr. – once regarded as one of the top pound-for-pound boxers in the world – to a boxing match. “Anderson really would love to fight Roy Jones, Jr. in a boxing match,” said Ed Soares, Silva’s manager. “It’s not just talk, we really would like to put that fight together. “We respect Jones’ boxing ability and think he’s one of the best, but we’re tired of different boxers saying that MMA fighters aren’t technical. Anderson would love to fight Roy Jones in a boxing match under boxing rules to prove that MMA fighters are technical, too.” It now appears that what started out as a dream bout may actually have some merit to it.

Spike Releases Details About Ultimate Fighter 7
For the first time in the show’s history, starting with its seventh season, “The Ultimate Fighter” will debut on Spike TV with 32 competitors vying for a shot at a UFC contract. This time each competitor will have to fight to earn his spot on the show. The first two episodes, airing April 2 and April 9, will include a total of 16 fights, either airing in their entirety or featuring extensive highlights. The 16 fighters who win will advance to The Ultimate Fighter house, while the 16 fighters who lose will go home. “The new format will give us two incredibly intense episodes to launch the season and will weed out some of the guys who might not have the heart and desire that it takes to become a UFC fighter,” said UFC president Dana White about the new season

With Lessons Learned, Hermes Franca Wants Back in UFC
Franca addressed his 12-month suspension for anabolic steroid use, as well as his desire to return to the octagon, while a guest on a special Wednesday episode of The Lights Out Show on the TAGG Radio Network (www.taggradio.com), a partner site of MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). "This has never happened to me before, you know, with my team or whatever," Franca said. "It was really bad news." The CSAC's decision to suspend Franca for a year after he admitted his steroid use -- only to reduce Sean Sherk's suspension to six months based on his high-powered attorney's claim of supplement contamination -- left the commission dealing with considerable controversy. The irony of the situation is not lost on Franca. "I think we make mistakes when we love somebody or we love something," Franca said. "We make mistakes. So I told what I did, and I really don't care about Sean Sherk. Of course, it makes me feel like, 'Oh man, I should be lying.'"

“I just spoke with Roy Jones’ management and they are very interested in it. They think it would break all kinds of pay-per-view records. It all kind of started as a dream of Anderson’s, but if the UFC would back it, it is something that we really would like to pursue.” Jones’ management indicated that this could be a fight that would bring together the fractured factions of boxing and mixed martial arts. “They think it will actually bring together the boxing and MMA communities,” said Soares...

Bocek on UFC 83: “There’s no way I’m gonna lose in Canada”
On April 19th, the 26-year old Bocek will go for win number two in the UFC when he takes on The Ultimate Fighter season six winner, Mac Danzig. “I see it as a really good fight,” said Bocek, “and on paper I think it’s a good style matchup for me. I don’t think he’s fought anyone like me before. This fight’s gonna give me a lot of exposure, and more importantly, get me where I need to be – higher up in the rankings.” “I’ve been competing since I was 12,” he said. “That’s what I do, that’s all I know. It (fighting in front of a huge hometown crowd) gets your blood flowing but it doesn’t really bother me. I’m used to competing a lot, and there’s no way I’m gonna lose in Canada.”

Thiago Alves Brings in a Ringer
Knowing that Parisyan will likely include his bone-jarring judo background to keep him on track for a title shot, Thiago Alves has enlisted special help to prepare for their fight in the form of four-time national judo champion and former Olympian Rhadi Ferguson, who now resides in Coconut Creek, Florida, and assists American Top Team athletes. Recently Ferguson podcasted regarding the work he's been doing with Alves and had the following comments:

"From studying Karo Parisyan, he has a system that he does which is absolutely phenomenal. I had to break that thing down like a fraction. It's been almost a month and a half now that I've been training with Thiago and we've gone through the ins and the outs of the series... [Thiago's] movement patterns are getting better and he's beginning to "float" real good now, moving like a judo player."

The top 10 sports marketers in 2007 (and the amount of spending)
However, while Anheuser-Busch is now the world's largest sports marketer, that wasn't the case in 2006. Chevrolet actually edged out Anheuser-Busch in total spending -- $271 million to $252.5 million -- that year. However, Chevrolet dropped its spending in 2007 by 36.1 percent to just $172.3 million. Anheuser-Busch dropped its spending by just 13.6 percent to $218.2 million to reclaim the top spot. Anheuser-Busch has actually been the largest sports marketer every year -- except 2006 -- since Nielsen Monitor-Plus began tracking the data in 1994. Chevrolet took the top spot in 2006 because of drastically increased spending on the Olympics and the FIFA World Cup. The top 10 sports marketers in 2007 (and the amount of spending) include: Anheuser-Busch, $218.2 million Chevrolet, $173.2 million AT&T Mobile, $172 million Ford, $139.5 million Verizon, $139.2 million Spring-Nextel, $137.5 million Toyota, $134.8 million Nissan, $99.8 million Coors, $89.5 million DirecTV, $85.4 million

I'd bet my modest bankroll that this is where they have the Boston TUF tryouts that are supposed to take place. It is right in Somerville on the edge of Beantown and this camp has been getting tons of press.

Who's No. 2 at 205?
All too often, being No. 2 in the world just doesn't cut it. Go ahead and ask John Kerry or the New England Patriots, two recent examples that second place is really just the first loser. In MMA, however, where the No. 1 light heavyweight spot has been defiantly claimed by a howling, chained figure called Rampage, second best will have to do. MMA debates can rage on for decades -- just ask an old timer: Gracie or Sakuraba? -- and so it only makes sense that with a clear No. 1, the discussion of No. 2 begins. For the fighters, this isn't a discussion of second best (they all think they're the best) as much as it is a discussion of who's in line for the next title shot. With Quinton Jackson the undeniable top 205 pounder in the world, let's take a look at the potential candidates, in no particular order, for No. 2.

"I am very happy with the choice of this opponent because he is a tough guy who is coming off three wins in a row, and I think we will make a great fight for the public. I like to face those tougher guys, and I thought this is a great opportunity." Tavares is in Rio de Janeiro training for the fight at the Minotauro team training center.

‘Spider' Silva Angry with Okami
Rising off the deck, Anderson Silva's invincibility felt imperiled. With scorecards reflecting Silva's first dropped round since joining the UFC, the Brazilian stalker stood opposite Dan Henderson , as real a test as there is at 185 pounds, taking the advice of trainers with the attitude of someone meandering his way through a stick of gum. Perhaps it's simple to maintain poise when truth has revealed no one can mess with you. Not right now, at least. Henderson, some said, was the fighter to derail Silva's impressive run. It didn't happen because, as the UFC champ sees it, he was just better.
