Former UFC middleweight Terry Martin needed less than 30 seconds to pick up his first professional boxing victory Friday night at "The Odeum Rumble" in Villa Park, Illinois. Martin scored the first-round knockout over the now 0-2 Ricardo Upchurch of Mansfield, Ohio in a cruiserweight bout scheduled for four rounds. Next up for Martin is a mixed martial arts bout versus David "The Crow" Loiseau on May 17 at a Combat Fighting Championships event in Newcastle, England.

Well apparently on the BET boards, Ben Hill the manager of "Iron Ring" trainer Novell G. Bell has been getting real mouthy about MMA fighters being nothing but toughman-level fighters and went as far as saying he would challenge any MMA fighter to try to step to him. Novell G. Bell wasn't as disrespectful but had some choice words for MMA fighters, too. Well some of the guys from the Underground forum (mixedmartialarts.com forums) got word to professional MMA fighter Nick Thompson and he accepted the manager's challenge to a "no rules fight". The manager hasn't accepted yet but these mcdojo losers have no idea what kind of an ass beating they could be in store for. American Top Teamer Mike Hauben waiting to make his pro debut has said he would fight the guy for free as long as he signs a waiver saying he isn't liable for his injuries. This isn't really news-worthy but it's worth a good read to see these mcdojo idiots being called out after running their mouth.

Welcome back to another edition of My Take On MMA! Over the last month we've had two solid SHOWXC events, a very good WEC, a very good Fight Night and a very good Strikeforce event. We've been on a roll and it has been fun. And then I checked the schedule and saw YAMMA on it. This was a show that seemed to be heading towards doom since the beginning. Butterbean as a headliner, I mean, seriously. Frye out and Smith in. Smith in a police chase and out, Goodridge in. Goodridge out, Mark Kerr rolls out of the buffet and in. Smith is back in after a plea-bargain I assume and that wasn't even anything involving the tournament. And then three days before the event they get Ron Waterman as an alternate, not there for the tournament or a fight, there as an alternate. This is going to be fun.

Jake O'Brien (10-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC), a 23-year-old heavyweight who suffered his first professional loss to Andrei Arlovski in March, has been released from the UFC and has agreed to a two-fight deal with the Palace Fighting Championship. According to Pavia, O'Brien had recently signed a new contract with the UFC and had two fights remaining on the deal. "Yes, you could say we were surprised by the UFC's decision," Pavia said "Jake really wanted that fight at UFC 82," Pavia said. "However, had we known that his tenure with the organization was at risk when we were presented with the Arlovski fight, we may have approached it differently."

From the ashes of Pride FC a new organization has risen called Dream, a partnership with FEG, the primary group behind K-1, and the former employees of Pride. Recently, FEG executive Sadaharu Tanigawa spoke to MMAWeekly.com about how the organization was founded and why they decided to work with the Pride staff. K-1 Hero’s and Pride were two of the major players for mixed martial arts in Japan and Tanigawa explains why they didn’t simply incorporate the Pride staff into the Hero’s brand, but instead changed the name to Dream. “In order to (attract) the Pride fans, we have to bring something new,” said Tanigawa. “Because the Pride fans, they don’t really come to the Hero’s events. In order to have them in our events … not only the fans of Pride, but the former Pride staff they were kind of intimidated working together with us as the Hero’s front, so that’s why we have to have something (new).” This new organization has roots in both K-1 Hero’s and Pride of course, and the promotion started to breathe life around the same time the former Pride staff helped to organize the year end Yarennoka! event that closed 2007. “Maybe a week after New Year’s we started thinking about working together,” Tanigawa stated. “Already in Japan, we had discussed working together with the Yarennoka event, then we started discussing new names and then we went with one of those new names and we finally decided on the event name, Dream.”

Travis Wiuff (Pictures) conquered Marcelo Pereira and Ricco Rodriguez (Pictures) before besting Minnesotan Chris Tuscherer in the finals to capture Yamma's eight-man heavyweight tournament Friday in Atlantic City, N.J. It doesnt say a whole lot about the fights but it has all of the results, interesting stuff.

According to Josh Gross on Beatdown, YAMMA was expecting ~1000 people to show up at the weigh ins but no one did other than the press and the camps of the fighters. He called the whole thing depressing. pictures after the jump. I'll be suprised if 1000 people show up for the fights nevermind the weigh ins

The Yuki Sasaki-Jorge Santiago fight that was originally set for November's Strikeforce event but cancelled at the last minute has now been rescheduled. World Victory Road announecd the fight for May 18 at Ariake Colosseum in Tokyo as part of WVR's Sengoku 2 event.

“… we’ll see what happens. I think it’s going to be an interesting fight. Fedor just fought a pretty tall opponent in Hong Man Choi, so obviously he’s been in that mode of dealing with a guy that size, but I think Tim is a little more seasoned fighter than Hong Man has proved to be. But Hong Man wasn’t easy so it will be interesting to see how Emelianenko deals with him and a pretty good indicator for me, having just fought Tim this last year, as to where I stand and how things might go if I finally get the chance to fight Fedor.”

About three weeks ago, EliteXC lent out its up and coming lightweight star, Eddie Alvarez, to the Japanese promotion DREAM so he could compete in a 16-man lightweight grand prix tournament. EliteXC allows most of their fighters to compete outside their organization, probably because more exposure can’t be a bad thing for any fighter. So Eddie was shipped overseas to represent the promotion in a tournament that they knew a lot of people would be watching … or at least paying attention to. Alvarez did not disappoint, stopping Andre “Dida” Amade in the first round with strikes. The fight was not only impressive for Eddie because of the level of competition, but he was fighting a long way from home, really on the big stage for the first time in his career, and he dominated. That left five possible candidates for a round two opponent: Tatsuya Kawajiri, Joachim Hansen, Katsuhiko Nagata, Luiz Firmino or Mitsuhiro Ishida. All very good fighters and any one of which would provide a solid fight and test for Alvarez. It was recently announced it would be “Hellboy” Hansen and the fight would take place at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan, on May 11.

Mirko Cro Cop — the Pride FC 2006 Open Weight Grand Prix Champion and three-fight UFC veteran — today held a live chat with fans over at MMA-ID.com. He answered a ton of questions, including his plan to compete twice more under the DREAM banner and return to the Octagon to avenge losses to Gabriel Gonzaga and Cheick Kongo. In addition, the Croatian is set on rematching Fedor Emelianenko on New Year’s Eve — regardless of the promotion.

A proposed fight between Fedor Emelianenko and Tim Sylvia has been agreed to… at least in theory. Emelianenko confirmed the July 19 fight to Sherdog.com on Tuesday, saying that he was looking forward to fighting Sylvia. Sources close to Sylvia’s camp said that the bout has yet to be signed, but indicated that the former UFC champion is committed to making the fight happen and has verbally agreed it. From the sounds of this article, it doesn't look like this fight is nearly the done deal, that I thought it was. I hope it does happen and likely it will, but this to me raises some doubts of it happening.

SUN Sports & Entertainment Inc. on Tuesday announced that it has signed an agreement with Fox Sports Net to telecast its new mixed martial arts television series, “GI vs. Pro.” SUN's "Art of War" division will produce a series of nine MMA events that will air as one-hour specials Saturday nights at midnight on FSN, beginning July 19, 2008 and concluding on September 13, 2008. GI vs. Pro will pit current and former MMA-trained armed services members against professional mixed martial arts fighters from around the country. All fights will be scheduled for three, 5-minute rounds inside a circular cage. FSN announcer Jay Glazer and analyst Frank Trigg will be the commentary team for the telecasts.

A proposed contest between Fedor Emelianenko and Tim Sylvia is currently in discussions according to a source close to the negotiations. Though our source informed us that this fight is a "solid possibility" it should be noted that it is far from a done deal and would require further negotiations if a basic agreement is reached. There are also other names in the works for both fighters should this fight fail to materialize. The fight, however, if officially agreed to, will be held in Chicago this June under the newly formed Adrenaline MMA banner. The card is also set to feature Jeff Monson taking on Mike Russow in a heavyweight showdown.

“I’m the CEO, so I’m going to make the matches. Well, they wanted a say. They wanted to be able to say, ‘we don’t like that match … we want to do something else.’ … I couldn’t make money with him. There was just no way we could make money with that kind of overhead. That became apparent. To take all of our investors’ money and put it around Fedor, it just didn’t make business sense…. I think people understand that I tried everything possible to make this happen. In business, sometimes it just doesn’t work. We bounced back, I think, very well. Getting Tim Sylvia is a huge coup for us. Without him, what would we have? We locked onto him. We locked onto Rothwell. Now, I actually feel better about where we’re headed than I did before. I would trade Fedor for Rothwell and Sylvia every day

Frank Shamrock's broken arm won't keep him from fighting again, but it's going to be a while. How long depends on how fast his body heals up, but initial estimates are he will be out a minimum of 8 months. Ouch.
