Exclusive Interview: Tom Atencio -- Affliction VP, Talks about UFC's July 19th card, Dana and more.
Hey, Tom. Thanks for taking the time to talk. Dana White has counter programmed on July 19th, offering a free Spike show that will feature Anderson Silva. What are your thoughts on that? I think it's flattering. I mean, come on, that means we're obviously a threat to him. It means we're obviously in competition with him because he wouldn't be doing it if we weren't. So my guess from the polls and from what everybody's saying, they're gonna buy my pay per view or come to the fight and they're gonna Tivo or tape this fight because it's free. That's what I'm doing. Yeah, exactly. That's all I had to do is ask you. Just think about it. It just gives the people who were not going to buy my pay per view something to do now. There does seem to be a lot of brand loyalty with some UFC fans, so they're glad they're getting something to watch that night other than your event. Exactly. I think the guys that weren't going to buy my pay per view, they're still not going to buy it, so that's okay. Like I said, obviously we're some kind of a threat, because if we weren't he wouldn't even be thinking twice about us. I noticed a little bit of guerrilla marketing on the Affliction side as well. You guys have taken old quotes from Dana about your fighters and are using them on advertisements. Whose idea was that? (Laughs) We have a great team here and we're doing everything we can to make sure that everybody knows about our show.
Arkansas fight fans treated to man on man action.... not the good kind...
"The day after the June 5 Texarkana bout, Fort Smith's convention centre hosted “Blue Collar Brawlin.”' Fort Smith police Sgt. Adam Holland said organizers told him a character named “Straight Dave” would goad a planted audience member into the ring for a fight. The two men would then wrestle, rip away some of their clothes and share a brief kiss reminiscent of one between Baron Cohen and Will Ferrell in the film Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby."

Magnitude of opportunity not lost on Ben Rothwell
Ben Rothwell gets it. At only 26, the heavyweight slugger is a veteran of the sport, with 34 pro bouts on his résumé and an unbeaten nine-fight run through the International Fight League. However, his fight on the "Affliction: Banned" show in Anaheim, Calif., later this month takes his career to a new level and is unlike any opportunity he's had before. "This is the biggest fight for me so far," said Rothwell. "I've had some tough fights, some good fights, but Andrei (Arlovski) is a former UFC champion and still ranked high in the top 10. And, anytime you're fighting someone ranked higher than you, it does good things for you. This is a chance for me to truly bring myself into the top 10."
KALA HOSE TO DEFEND ICON TITLE ON AUGUST 2
ICON middleweight champion Kala “Kolohe” Hose will return to action and defend his belt on Aug. 2 against Rolando Dominique in an event to be held at the Blaisdell Arena in Hawaii. Hose made an impressive showing to win the ICON middleweight title in March when he defeated former UFC and current EliteXC fighter Phil Baroni in an exiting match-up. Following the fight with Baroni, it seemed Hose had a great many big fights ahead of him, but the Hawaiian was derailed in his next fight out. He lost by rear naked choke to Robert “Bubba” McDaniel in an undercard fight during the June 14 EliteXC show in his home state.

Crocop's official statement regarding dream 5
A quote from Crocop from his website at MMA-ID.com "Hello everyone, unfortunately I have some bad news? I won't be fighting at DREAM 5 at all. I was about to face Jerome LeBanner but he decided to fight in K1 against Schilt. Mighty Mo was the alternative and I accepted this challenge, but unfortunately Mighty Mo pulled off from the fight. I was ready to face Mo, but maybe this scenario wasn't that bad for me at all and I'll tell you why. I've been having problems with my right elbow for years and the injury got even worse over last 6 months. I'm already receiving a proper treatment but the recovery won't happen over night. The second problem is a knee injury, something that troubles me for quite a while. I had difficulties using my kicks and over last few weeks I focused more on boxing and grappling. I really wanted to fight on July 21 and I was even ignoring doctor's suggestions, but now I've rached the point from which I can't continue with my normal training regiment due to my injuries. I was willing to accept the risk of fighting Mo or someone else without being 100% ready fo the fight. I had only one fight this year, I miss big fights and top level competition. I'm eager to get back to the big stage, I still have good fights left in me and I won't give up. I'm not happy with this outcome of course, but at this moment I need to be patient and give some time for my body to recover. I'm scheduled for arthroscopy tomorrow morning, it's a minor surgical procedure but it will keep me away from MMA trainings for 2-3 weeks probably. From Wednesday I'll focus on my new cardio training program and we'll add MMA elements to my training regiment as soon as my knee will be ready for action. My goal is to become the first heavyweight champion in DREAM and to do that I need to be ready to fight on September 23. I'm not interested in summer time, vacations or things like that; I'll focus on getting back to shape and hopefully I'll fight in September. I would really like to fight Alistair Overeem, we all know why and I won't let it go. My career is far from being over, I'll be fighting some strong competitors soon again and hopefully I'll meet Fedor in the ring once more in 2009. Thank you for supporting me and I'll get back to you all soon to keep you updated. "
