Ryan Ford vs. Joel Powell Announced for WSOF Canada Inaugural Welterweight Championship
The World Series of Fighting will establish their Inaugural Welterweight Champion for their Canadian expansion (WSOF Canada) in February, as Ryan Ford takes on Joel Powell for the belt. If you’re confused or wondering about Steve Carl (the reigning WSOF welterweight champ), let us clear the air. President Ray Sefo intends on establishing national champions from each country included in the organization’s international expansion campaign.
“..I want a WSOF national champion from every country!” said Sefo Tuesday.
Ryan “The Real Deal” Ford (21-4 MMA, 0-0 WSOF) is an Alberta native riding an impressive five fight win streak that most recently saw him picking up a 5th round submission over Michael Hill at AFC 19 to win the AFC welterweight title. Ford trains at Montreal’s legendary Tristar gym alongside Canada’s most elite mixed martial artists such as Georges St-Pierre, Rory MacDonald, Francis Carmont, and others. Ford went undefeated (2-0) in Bellator in 2012, and will be fighting for the 170 pound title in his WSOF Canada debut.
WSOF aiming for 8-10 events in 2014, two to be broadcast on NBC
With the final WSOF event of the year in the books, take a look at the big plans president Ray Sefo has for the new year.
"Next year we're gonna have two shows that are gonna be on the mothership of NBC," adds Sefo. "They are starting to promote WSOF on there, which reaches millions of millions of other people that probably don't know much about the sport or have never seen it."
Knapp Wants TV Deal Following Invicta 7
For the second time in its seven-event history, Invicta FC had a night filled with technical difficulties. Promotion president Shannon Knapp was a guest on MMAmania's "Darce Side Radio" podcast this past week and was asked about the promotion finding a home on television. She said it's something she is focused on. After tonight's issues, it's only logical that it should be a top priority for Knapp and Invicta.
