Alessio submits Spratt, Couture injured in pro debut during night of free fights
(mmajunkie.com)
LAS VEGAS - John Alessio choked out fellow UFC veteran Pete Spratt in the night's main event, and Kim Couture was on the wrong end of a unanimous decision in her professional MMA debut, during Friday's "Free for All, A Night of Combat" event. The fights took place at the Thomas & Mack Center on the campus of UNLV in Las Vegas as part of a combination boxing/MMA event. Approximately 18,000 tickets were distributed for the night of free fights. After four boxing bouts, the MMA portion of the night kicked off with a five-fight card.

Interview With WAMMA CEO Dave Szady
(bloodyelbow.com)
Wednesday afternoon I was able to sit down for a phone interview with WAMMA's CEO Dave Szady and COO Mike Lynch. I was able to pose a lot of the questions that have been troubling the MMA community as well as allowing them an opportunity to address a lot of the rumors that have been running rampant on message boards and websites. Are sanctioning fees being charged to the fighters and promotions? How is Tim Sylvia involved in a supposedly "undisputed" world title fight with two losses in his last three fights? Are the WAMMA rankings fixed? Read on for the answers and much more:

Affliction Is Counting On The Power Of DVR
(cagepotato.com)

“As far as I’m concerned, people are going to Tivo (the UFC show) and watch our fight, and then go back to (watch UFC) later,” he said. “Obviously you’re going to get those people who are going to watch something for free (rather) than pay. … But our card is definitely stacked. I don’t know anybody that can say it’s not a great card.”
that’s a valid strategy as it relates to hardcore fans. We’ll see whether it will work on those people we always hear about who only know the UFC. Atencio is right when he says the card is stacked, though it’s stacked largely with fighters who appeal to that hardcore fan base and much less so to the casual fan, who may or may not have heard the name Fedor at any time in his life. Their success with this show — particularly with the UFC going up against them on Spike TV — could tell us a lot about the actual interest level in MMA as a sport, rather than simply the UFC as a brand.

AFL expects to sign "20 to 30" female fighters this summer
(mmajunkie.com)
LEXINGTON, KY. -- The Kentucky-based American Fight League is poised for a major shopping spree and could soon have a stronghold on the world's top female talent. AFL CEO B.J. Santiago discussed the organization's plans with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) on Thursday while overseeing a media session with newly signed AFL fighters Tara LaRosa and Bobby Lashley. The AFL has been on a free-agent signing spree in recent months, bringing a number of mid-level, though recognizable, fighters into the organization, including Rafael Assuncao, Junior Assuncao, Diego Saraiva, Chilo Gonzalez and Dan Christison. Lashley, a former WWE performer and decorated amateur wrestler, was one of its biggest scores to date.

Affliction Gate Update
(mmapayout.com)
Sergio Non at USAToday has an update: Atencio might sound like a diehard MMA fan gleeful over his upcoming fantasy matchups, but he's not alone — 7,000 to 8,000 tickets have been sold so far, he said. If that figure is correct, it would mean that without any major marketing and with the show still a month away, Affliction: Banned is already close to hitting the live numbers of Elite XC's much-hyped May 31 event, which reported 8,033 paid tickets for a card that had a fraction of the Affliction line-up's cachet.

Affliction To Use Street Team
(mmapayout.com)
Affliction has added another tool to their marketing plan with the introduction of a street team to market their Affliction: Banned PPV. This is generally a low cost, grassroots level method used to get out word of mouth about your product. This could be an effective tool for Affliction. While the UFC certainly has it legions of fans, there is a certain portion of the MMA audience that embrace the "other", that being anything except UFC. Affliction at this point is an unknown, but one that will be supported sight unseen by some.

Kim Couture talks AFL contract, Friday's pro debut, former feud with Matt Hughes
(mmajunkie.com)
Kim Couture will make her professional MMA debut Friday at a combination boxing-MMA show -- one that's expected to draw approximately 18,000 spectators at UNLV's Thomas & Mack Center. After that, though, the pro MMA rookie and Vice President of Xtreme Couture isn't sure what the future holds. However, Couture today told TAGG Radio (www.mmajunkie.com), the official radio partner of MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com), that she's been in talks with Strikeforce about a possible deal, and that the Kentucky-based American Fight League has offered a lucrative contract. "I've spoken to Strikeforce, and actually, I'm looking at the American Fight League right now," said Couture, who guest-hosted the show. "Tara LaRosa just signed with them. I made that introduction happen. These guys have a lot of money. They're coming from the right place."

Dream LW GP Semi-finals and Finals to be held in one night
(mmajunkie.com)
Sorry if it's old news. DREAM.5 will feature the organization's lightweight grand prix semifinals, and the match-ups include Shinya Aoki (16-2) vs. Caol Uno (25-10-4) and Eddie Alvarez (14-1) vs. Tatsuya Kawajiri (22-4-2). The Japanese-based organization announced the match-ups on Sunday during its DREAM.4 event. Unlike former rounds of the tournament, both the semifinals and finals will take place during the July 21 event, meaning the finalists will fight twice in one night.

Nick Diaz goes off about everything
(punch.freedomblogging.com)
“Before we get started, I want to say that I know there are a lot of people and everybody is trying to protect the sport. And everybody wants to be sportsmen and that type of thing where everybody shakes hands and everybody is great friends and whatever. And that’s great. But you know what, this sport is (expletive) established. That’s obvious. There are people out there doing a great job making it look like a non-violent sport. That’s not my job. My job is warfare. I’m over here to (expletive) kill. We’re mortal enemies until we fight and then we can shake hands and be cool. But until then, if I’m signed to fight you I don’t (expletive) like you and I hate you’re (expletive) guts and we’re fighting until we’re cool. We’re not cool until I win or I lose and we can settle this. So that’s how I am about this sort of thing."

Affliction hoping for big burst on MMA scene
(mmajunkie.com)
He doesn't so much as have a promoter's license yet, but Tom Atencio has already got the shtick down. He's about a month away from promoting his first mixed martial arts card, but he's already touting it as the best in the history of the sport. That might be a stretch, though it's going to feature six of the world's elite heavyweights and enough of the world's finest fighters to hold the interest of even the most ardent MMA fans. And Atencio insists he's undaunted by the enormity of the task that lay ahead of Affliction before its July 19 debut card at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. He's got a card stacked with big – and expensive – names, elite heavyweights such as Fedor Emelianenko, Tim Sylvia, Andrei Arlovski, Josh Barnett, Ben Rothwell, Pedro Rizzo and Aleksander Emelianenko. That's a former PRIDE heavyweight champion and three ex-UFC heavyweight champs among that group, in case you're wondering. "If you are an MMA fan, even if you're just a casual fan, can you look at this card and not say you're dying to see it?" Atencio asks. No doubt. It's a must-see event, particularly since it brings Emelianenko back onto the world stage.

Fighter Salaries: The Problems With Revenue Linking
(mmapayout.com)
There exists a critical assumption within the business world that most of our theories rely on: the concept of rationality. A rational or "greedy" individual is said to prefer more than less and it is this preference that can be seen in all walks of life. Investors are expecting greater wealth generation, creditors want higher interest rates, buyers want a cheaper price, and sellers want more for their goods. The same can also be said for the relationship that exists between a firm and its employees; no matter how much you pay someone, they're always going to want more. This is human nature. This is rationality. Very, very interesting:

Affliction: Buying Into The Hype
(bloodyelbow.com)
It's one thing for fans to salivate in anticipation of the card Affliction is putting on in July. It's another for the people in charge of that company to mark out so hard for the fights they have that they ignore the reality of their situation. In this week's Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported Affliction's internal expectations: The promotion internally believes it can break even, even with a $4 million fighter payroll off a combination of a sellout live gate and 250,000 to 300,000 PPV buys. On the live gate issue, a sellout is extremely unlikely
