(sports.yahoo.com)
To most passengers who were hustling to their gates at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport, the two large men eating lunch together didn’t merit so much as a second glance. But those who know mixed martial arts had to do a double take when they walked by and saw Ben Rothwell and Andrei Arlovski sharing a quiet meal together while awaiting a flight to Chicago

Affliction Promises Ad Campaign Real Soon
(bloodyelbow.com)
For those of who've been wondering when Affliction would start promoting their July 19th PPV, MMA Junkie has some comments from Affliction Vice President Tom Atencio: "Right now, we haven't even broken water (on marketing) yet," Atencio said. "We're waiting until the push because we know a lot of people, especially the casual fan, they'll forget about it if we push too soon. ... We've sold about 8,000 tickets so far, and that's with minimal advertising." Talking about the UFC July 19th free event, Atencio also reveals a real big gap in his thought processes: "Anybody that was going to buy our pay-per-view, I think they're still going to buy it," Atencio said. "I think the people that weren't going to buy it, [the UFC event] just gives them something to do now. I don't think it really changed the hardcore fans' outlook."

AFL: VooDoo Economics?
(mmapayout.com)
Knowing the financial straits that most MMA start-ups are hindered by, it was a bit surprising to see the big numbers being thrown around recently by the American Fight League. Especially eye opening were the figures that were reported for the signing of female fighter Tara Larosa. Sherdog reported the terms recently: The deal - which will reportedly pay Larosa a minimum of $500,000 and could reach $750,000 over the course of its 18-month term - PS. The AFL is expecting to achieve 150,000 PPV buys each event when they start holding them later this year!

Affliction VP says Edwin Dewees could replace "Tiger" White
(mmajunkie.com)
The July 19 "Affliction: Banned" event recently suffered its first card casualty, as K.O. Dynasty Management confirmed that Vernon "Tiger" White had been pulled from the event. Affliction Vice President Tom Atencio today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that the organization now has its sights set on UFC veteran Edwin Dewees (35-12-0) as a possible replacement to face Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (13-3). "We're interested in Edwin Dewees," Atencio said. "I haven't had a chance to talk to him, but I know somebody's reaching out to him, and hopefully that will work out. But we're in talks right now." As we reported earlier today, White was pulled from the card after testing positive for a banned diuretic after a May 31 Xtreme Fighting Association event in Las Vegas. Atencio said no sanctions have yet been levied on White, but he also said that Affliction could not wait until a decision was issued by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. "I haven't talked to [White], but I know that he has a hearing on the ninth of July," Atencio said. "We just can't wait that long to find out what's going to happen to him."

AFL Sstill interested in Kim Couture
(mmaweekly.com)
LEXINGTON, KY – Kim Couture’s defeat in her professional MMA debut may have some wondering about her future as a professional fighter, but the American Fight League has no doubt at all. The organization wants to sign Couture to be part of its ever-developing female fighting platform. “The AFL is still very much interested in signing Kim Couture,” said AFL CEO, BJ Santiago. “We would be honored to have her on board.” “Kim had a tough loss in Las Vegas, but she proved to the world that she’s got a fighter’s heart,” said Santiago. “Despite suffering a broken jaw on the first punch in the first round she fought like a lion and just kept going. The tenacity she displayed in the ring was unbelievable. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

Fedor: ‘Im proud to fight’ Tim Sylvia at Affliction: ‘Banned’ on July 19
(mmamania.com)
“He is a very strong and good fighter. He won 5 times in the championship on the UFC and he is 4th position in the world ranking. I’m proud to fight him…. I defeated a fighter who was a lot bigger than him, so I don’t think it’s too hard to fight a big fighter.” Fedor Emelianenko talks about his upcoming heavyweight showdown with Tim Sylvia during the main event of Affliction: “Banned” at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. on July 19. It will be the biggest test for “The Last Emperor” since a unanimous decision win over Mirko Cro Cop in August 2005 (although Mark Hunt is no slouch … and he defeated him via kimura in 2006).

Bobby Lashley Training With AKA, H.I.T Squad and others for MMA Debut
(mmajunkie.com)
LEXINGTON, Ky. - MMA promoters have long targeted professional wrestling fans as potential ticket-buyers for their own events. Now, those same promoters are targeting professional wrestling's athletes as potential stars. Pro wrestling's latest export, recently signed American Fight League fighter Bobby Lashley, recently told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that he doesn't want to be viewed as just another wrestler. "I'm putting it all together," Lashley said. "I'm going into this thing not with just overpowering my own style with [wrestling]. I'm actually learning everything else. I'm learning the jiu-jitsu; I'm taking it from the basics. I'm learning my kickboxing, my boxing. I'm getting the whole game tied together. So when I debut, it's not going to be a wrestler trying to do MMA. It's going to be a fighter."

Eddie Alvarez anxious for DREAM challenge
(mmajunkie.com)
With nearly a month remaining before the finals of DREAM's inaugural lightweight tournament, rising star Eddie Alvarez (14-1) has begun preparations for what will be the most formidable test of his young career. Alvarez is slated to face the highly respected Tatsuya Kawajiri in the July 21 semifinal bout in Osaka, Japan. A victory would mean returning later that evening to take on the winner of the night's other semifinal bout between submission ace Shinya Aoki and longtime veteran Caol Uno. Alvarez discussed the task at hand while a guest on a recent edition of TAGG Radio (www.taggradio.com), the official radio partner of MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). "Well that's why we fight, right?" Alvarez asked. "To see how good we are, and go and compete against the best. When I hired (agent) Monte Cox at the beginning of the year, I told him that there's two things that I wanted to do for 2008. I wanted to fight a lot more because I'm young. I'm 24, and I wanted to get the ring time in, the experience. And I wanted to fight top-notch guys. He's done that for me." The young Philadelphia native will certainly get a chance to test himself against the sport's best, as Kawajiri and Aoki are both generally considered among the top 10 lightweights in the world. Add in the possibility of fighting 30 minutes in one night, and the challenge becomes even greater. Alvarez, however, welcomes the opportunity and feels conditioning will be the deciding factor in the end. "I think a key factor in the finals of this fight is going to be conditioning," Alvarez said. "I think me and Kawajiri present a lot of the same strengths. And I think what he's good at, I'm either equal or a little bit better. So I think what it's going to come down to is more heart and mind and conditioning than skill set. ... I think it's just going to be who prepares properly and who controls the pace of the fight." Alvarez has already proven himself worthy of his final-four status through his performance in the first two rounds of the tournament. Alvarez battled back from an early knockdown in his first round match with Andre Amade to win by knockout, and he then fought valiantly in a decision win over Joachim Hansen -- a fight many consider among the year's best. "It was a flash thing," Alvarez said of the knockdown against Amade. "It was like a quick flash. We were exchanging, and it was right in the middle of an exchange. He came with an overhand right. Honestly, I couldn't even tell you (because) it was so fast. One second I was standing, fighting, and the next second I was on my butt. And I just said, 'I can't stay here. Get up.' And we kept going. "Joachim, yeah, tough cat. There's not a lot of times when I hit someone and they keep coming at me. He's one of those guys, and I hate those guys. I just like for them to stay down after I hit them and make my job a lot easier. ... Joachim is a hell of a dude. We went out. We had dinner a day after the fight. (We) laughed and joked about the fight. He's a great sport and a great character. I really like Joachim, and I'm sure he'll be back in DREAM with the kind of fights he puts on." After withstanding two game opponents, Alvarez knows he'll now need to outlast two more. But for now, his focus remains solely on Kawajiri. "The main thing is to worry about my first-round opponent," Alvarez said. "It's good to scout all of them, but if I don't get past Kawajiri, then I'm not achieving my goal, and that's to win the tournament. I think the main thing is to focus on [Kawajiri], and him mostly. I think the second fight, it really just comes down to your heart and mind." The task is certainly daunting. A tournament victory would take Alvarez winning his fourth and fifth fight in just six months. But for Alvarez, who plans on finally taking a break to get married in September, there's no other way he'd rather live. "I love it," Alvarez said. "I've been training for six, seven straight months with no break. I get maybe 14 days off, then I'm back on the horse again training for the next round of the tournament. So I'm glad they're cramming it all in. If I had to do the whole tournament in one night, and go back, I'd do it that way." Alvarez also discussed how he's been able to stay in good condition throughout this fight-filled year, why he's so popular in Japan, and why this won't be the first time he's had more than one opponent in a night. To hear the full interview, download the June 16 edition of TAGG Radio, available for free in the TAGG Radio archives.
