Fight Path: For XFC's big man Chris Barnett, martial arts was a family affair
Chris Barnett was a solid 320 pounds when went into the Xtreme Fighting Championships tryout in October. The Tampa gym was busy with fighters who wanted a shot at MMA, especially in an organization known to host some of the most exciting up-and-comers around. Not many of them, though, had heard about the tryout following a breakdancing back-and-forth with one of the organization's representatives, as Barnett had. But Barnett was unusual in several ways. He had come from a taekwondo-practicing family with an Air Force father who was quiet but respected. He had been a small-college wrestler who had learned judo with a friend because, frankly, there's not much else to do in Campbellsville, Ky.

Former UFC light heavyweight Tim Boetsch will be back in the cage on Aug. 15 in a matchup against IFL veteran Aaron Stark at King of the Cage "Thunderstruck" in Everett, Washington. In his UFC debut at UFC 81, Boetsch (8-3) became an immediate fan favorite with his dismantling of David Heath on ten days' notice. But one win and two losses later were enough for him to be handed his walking papers after UFC 96 in March.

It seems the stream of talent coming out of Colorado’s Ring of Fire event is ever-flowing, consistently producing some of the best young talent in the sport. Latest to flow down the pipeline is Fabian Acuna, a fighter some call “The 155-pound Cung Le.” After taking nearly six years off from the sport, Acuna returned to action in April, defeating James Martinez at Ring of Fire 34 in just over a minute-and-a-half.

After continued success in the Northwest fight circuit, John “Quick Guns” Gunderson has found it difficult to break through on the national stage. Rollercoaster results in the International Fight League (IFL) were followed up by a lengthy amount of time off due to injury, further setting back what had looked like a promising career. Undeterred, a return to action this year has seen Gunderson go 3-1. He’s on the verge of possibly making the breakthrough into the spotlight with a title shot in the highly respected Ring of Fire promotion on Aug. 1 against tough Chilean fighter Fabian Acuna.

Not so fast, Tito...

In a video interview we recently posted with Tito Ortiz shot this past weekend in Pittsburgh, "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" said that he is set to start his own organization, Punishment Fighting Championships, in association with Strikeforce. "I'm starting my own organization also with Strikeforce called "Punishment Fighting Championships," Ortiz said. "So, you know, just not as a promoter, I'll be competing also, and bringing some other guys around and trying to create superstars." However, when Fanhouse contacted Strikeforce director of communications Mike Afromowitz Tuesday, he made it pretty clear that no agreement is in place with Ortiz. "I don't know anything about it," Afromowitz said........

Javier Vazquez says Din Thomas, state commission to blame for "Ultimate Chaos" fiasco
As with any dispute, there are always two sides to every story. And as "Ultimate Chaos" victor Javier Vazquez today told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio) such was the case with this past Friday's weigh-in fiasco in Biloxi, Miss., which ultimately cost Din Thomas a chance to fight – and took money from Vazquez's pocket. "I never went up to the commission," Vazquez said. "I never bitched and complained. I never said anything. It wasn't my job to do that. That's the commission's job to do that."

Din Thomas Upset Over Being Pulled From Ultimate Chaos
Din Thomas, who was forced to withdraw from his contest at Ultimate Chaos on Saturday against Javier Vasquez, is upset over the circumstances surrounding his withdrawal. "I got to 146.6 and when I asked the athletic commission if I was okay, they said ‘yes.' It made sense because some commissions allow you a two-pound allowance. So I left the stage and started drinking right away to get re-hydrated. Javier's camp then apparently told the commission that they wanted me to cut the extra half-pound. So I tried and damn near killed myself in the sauna. It didn't make sense — if Javier wanted me to cut the weight why wasn't I told on the stage? I would have dropped my drawers and made it." Thomas was forced to withdraw after he began feeling ill attempting to cut the weight to make the 145lb limit. Mark Kergosien replaced Thomas and ended up losing by submission in the first round.

Vasquez Camp: Thomas Out at ‘Ultimate Chaos’
Javier Vazquez will make his anticipated return to mixed martial arts competition on Saturday but not against UFC veteran Din Thomas. Just hours before their scheduled featherweight bout, the Vazquez camp confirmed that Thomas bowed out of the match at Fight Force International “Ultimate Chaos” at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Miss. Vazquez, who announced his retirement following a 2007 submission victory against JC Pennington, will instead lock horns with Mark Kergosien, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu stylist anchored in Mississippi. “Din pulled out,” said Romie Aram, a UFC veteran and one of the founders of the Millennia Mixed Martial Arts Training Center, where Vazquez trains. “He had issues making weight and got himself sick.”

Bob Sapp is going to ‘wreck’ Bobbly Lashley at ‘Ultimate Chaos’
“[Bobby Lashley is] looking for a train wreck. I’m the train that’s going to wreck him. He’s expecting me to go three rounds … no. I’m going to knock him out. He’s looking for me? He’ll see me after I knock him out and he’s laying there looking up at me. Everybody’s going to see what ‘Ultimate Chaos’ means … me and Bobby Lashley.”

Adrenaline MMA promoter Monte Cox says in the fight business, things can go either way. Things like your choice of fights, venue, and production budget. It can take very little to change a proposed MMA show. Just like the fights, the margin for error is slim – especially when you’re in a foreign territory. “Anytime you go somewhere for the first time, you’re always going to encounter resistance,” said Cox. “You have hometown promoters that don’t want you there; you don’t really know who the local fighters are that draw; you don’t know where to go to get the best sponsors. And you’re not always treated fairly because you’re the out of town guy.”
