SYLVIA WILL STILL FIGHT; ADRENALINE WILL RETURN
Adrenaline MMA promoter Monte Cox says in the fight business, things can go either way.
Things like your choice of fights, venue, and production budget. It can take very little to change a proposed MMA show. Just like the fights, the margin for error is slim – especially when you’re in a foreign territory.
“Anytime you go somewhere for the first time, you’re always going to encounter resistance,” said Cox. “You have hometown promoters that don’t want you there; you don’t really know who the local fighters are that draw; you don’t know where to go to get the best sponsors. And you’re not always treated fairly because you’re the out of town guy.”
PITTSBURGH WELCOMES MMA ON JUNE 27
While the UFC is set to descend on Philadelphia in August, the city of champions, Pittsburgh, Penn., will officially welcome mixed martial arts to town on June 27. The Ultimate Cage Fighting Championship makes its Keystone State debut bringing the "Rumble on the Rivers" to the Mellon Arena featuring a number of top fighters including the main event pitting Rich Clementi against Kyle Jensen.
Vengeance is his: Fedor's brother to face family rival in MMA
It wasn't MMA, but Blagoi Ivanov scored plenty of bleeding ink last fall when he defeated Fedor Emelianenko in a Combat Sambo competition. According to Nightmare of Battle, Ivanov will now face Fedor's brother, Aleksander, in a Korean mixed martial arts contest on Sept. 29.
Pretty easy story to follow, though Ivanov is jumping into the deep end of the pool fairly quickly.
If he wins -- which would be a feat considering Aleksander's experience -- a rematch with Fedor seems inevitable.
"Inside MMA" preview: Tim Sylvia and Ray Mercer discuss Adrenaline MMA III stunner
This past weekend's infamous "Adrenaline MMA III: Bragging Rights" main event between former UFC champion Tim Sylvia and veteran boxing champion Ray Mercer comes under the spotlight during tonight's new episode of "Inside MMA."
Thanks to our partnership with HDNet, we present a preview clip of the fight and its aftermath.
Listen in as both Mercer and Sylvia discuss the bizarre circumstances surrounding the fight and its shocking finish.
The Bellator Underdogs Speak: Toby Imada and Jared Hess Talk About Eddie Alvarez and Hector Lombard
For those of us who have jobs and families and can't spend ALL our time obsessing about MMA, the Bellator events have been worth keeping an eye on for two reasons. First there's the stream of highlight reel finishes coming out of the tournaments. Secondly, there are a few fighters who had built reputations before getting into the Bellator shark tank.
Some of those guys, notably touted featherweight Wilson Reis and Jorge Masvidal have already been the victims of upset losses.
Starnes to Headline UCW 16 this Friday
Kalib Starnes will be coming to Winnipeg to headline Ultimate Cage Wars 16: Canada vs Hawaii, according to Gabriel Santos. Santos, the matchmaker for the Winnipeg-based UCW promotion, announced the bout on his Facebook profile.
Starnes is infamously known for his “Running Man” fight at UFC 83 against Nate Quarry. In the bout, Starnes failed to engage Quarry and Quarry ended up mocking the Canadian fighter near the end of the bout. Starnes was unceremoniously released by the UFC following the bout.
Now Kalib Starnes is looking to continue to rebuild his reputation as a fighter. MMAWeekly reports that sources close to the bout state that his opponent will be Bret “The Angry Hick” Bergmark. Bergmark has a 5-1 MMA record and is trained by Cesar Gracie and has had several fights in the Zuffa-owned WEC.
Link is from April, but figured I'd post it as new news since I'm sure 99.9% of MMA fans don't know he's fighting this Friday.
Bellator Fighting Championships on the Fast Track to Success
The Bellator Fighting Championships were labeled as being a "first of its kind" when it was first reported as a new promotion that would air on ESPN Deportes. The unique tagline came with the idea that the fighters would be pushed to the absolute limit of their physical abilities by fighting in divisonal tournaments while being only given, at the most, a month off between battles. While some of us within the MMA blogosphere felt that this could turn ugly if stars were suspended by the commission due to trauma, the gamble paid off for Bellator as they will see an end to their first season on Friday night with buzz circulating that the promotion will broadcast to English-speaking audiences in the fall.
Tim Sylvia Weighs In At 310 lbs For Mercer Fight Tonight !!!
The June 12 weigh-in event for Adrenaline III ‘Bragging Rights,’ featuring Tim Sylvia versus Ray Mercer, is officially in the books. The troubled MMA card is set to take place tonight (June 13) at the BJCC Arena in Birmingham, Alabama.
All 28 fighters who tipped the scales yesterday made weight without incident — though former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia stunned the crowd with a scale-busting weight of 310 pounds for his MMA-turned-boxing-turned-MMA fight against former pugilist powerhouse Ray Mercer.
Sylvia-Mercer Goes MMA
Tim Sylvia and Ray Mercer will now meet in a heavyweight mixed martial arts bout at Adrenaline III this Saturday at the BJCC Arena in Birmingham, Ala.
The matchup of former UFC champion and former boxing champion will headline 14 additional MMA bouts in the cage. The event will no longer be regulated.
Originally scheduled as a six-round boxing bout, Adrenaline owner and promoter Monte Cox said he made the decision to re-categorize the match on Thursday.
“I got a call from the Pennsylvania commissioner saying that the boxing match is illegal because we weren’t getting regulated by a U.S. commission,” said Cox on Thursday.
With no regulatory body present in Alabama, the Canadian-based River Cree Combative Sports Commission had agreed to step in and oversee the event.
Cox said he believed he had completed all the necessary requirements asked of him, which included procuring a letter from Alabama’s governor welcoming the Canadian commission into the jurisdiction.
However, Association of Boxing Commissions President Tim Lueckenhoff told Sherdog.com that neither he nor the ABC organization had been approached directly to regulate the bout. Further, Lueckenhoff said he’d thought Sylvia-Mercer would be an MMA contest and not a boxing bout. Lueckenhoff said federal law currently has no jurisdiction over MMA bouts, but laws are in place over boxing under the Professional Boxing Safety Act.
In a press release issued by the ABC on Thursday, the organization denounced the “unwarranted and illegal” boxing match. The release also noted that the River Cree commission, as well as referee John McCarthy, had withdrawn their involvement from the bout and event.
“Canadian boxing commissions are not authorized to supervise boxing matches in the U.S.; and, patently, it is wholly inappropriate for one representative from a Canadian boxing commission, together with an MMA referee, to supervise a boxing match,” said Bruce C. Spizler, chairman of the ABC legal committee in the release.
“I told the promoter I would do it if it was a sanctioned event,” McCarthy told Sherdog.com Thursday. “As soon as it became apparent that that would not happen, I pulled out.”
In March, it had been reported that the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board (NJSACB) said it would not regulate the bout, prompting Cox to move the bout to another venue.
“Everyone thinks I came to Alabama because it’s unsanctioned here,” said Cox, “but why would I go to so much trouble to try and get this event regulated if that were the case?”
Cox also said the Mashantucket Pequot Athletic Commission, which oversees events at the Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut, had agreed to regulate the event in March, but a financial agreement could not be reached with the casino.
The event was moved to Alabama for sponsorship opportunities, Cox said. Cox said he would not be able to procure new regulation for the event in time.

The latest Adrenaline MMA event, Adrenaline 3, is set for Saturday night and Monte Cox has revealed the full card. The event will feature a mix of amateur and pro MMA fights headlined by a 6-round boxing fight between Ray Mercer and Tim Sylvia to be held in a cage instead of a ring.
6/28 DEEP Toyama Impact - Fight Order
DEEP have put together a good card for their DEEP Toyama Impact event. With 2 events in 3 days, it is impressive what they have managed. This will be a rare occation to see a title fight in the Toyama area, and it should be a good one too. The champion Miku Matsumoto will get a chance to revenge her loss to Lisa Ward, a loss that dates 3 years back and the only loss she is yet to revenge. This should be an awesome fight between 2 of the world's top female fighters.

Jason MacDonald Returns At MFC 22: Payoff on September 25
Following his release from the UFC, “The Athlete” Jason MacDonald has recently confirmed that his next bout outside of the Octagon will be taking place on extremely familiar territory.
MacDonald made a name for himself with Canada’s MFC promotion, fighting a total of ten times under the MFC banner before being scooped up by the UFC in 2006 where he ended up going 5-5 with the organization before back to back losses to Wilson Gouveia and Nate Quarry brought upon his departure.
Considering the history it only seems fitting that MacDonald will make his return on his old stomping grounds at MFC 22: Payoff on September 25.
His opponent has yet to be determined, but according to MacDonald, it’s him against everyone as far as he’s concerned.

Tim Sylvia Returns To MMA In August
Tim Sylvia will be fighting for a "very high profile" mixed martial arts organisation in August, Fighters Only can exclusively reveal.
The former UFC heavyweight champion says that contracts for the summer fight have been drawn up but not signed.
"We have the contract at home, I am just waiting to get back and send it out," he said. "I'm not allowed to say right now what the show is or who my opponent is."
