Weekend Rundown: Downes Survives Scare, Wins Outside Octagon
(sherdog.com)
Taking a tuneup fight with a regional promotion is a risky move for any fighter under Zuffa contract, and UFC lightweight Daniel Downes nearly demonstrated why. An import from the World Extreme Cagefighting merger, the 25-year-old Roufusport product had not fought since WEC 53 in December, when he became the first man to top Chinese prospect Tiequan Zhang. Still without a date for his Octagon debut, Downes competed Friday night under the North American Fighting Championship banner at the Potawatomi Bingo Casino Expo Center in Milwaukee, and found himself in danger early against Tory Bogguess, a lesser-known veteran of the Midwest circuit.

Rampage Jackson to leave MMA when money is right with Hollywood, still wants Rashad Evans
(fiveknuckles.com)
It was gonna be an exciting fight. Those are the types of fights I'd watch. I'll watch Chuck fight every time he fights. I wouldn't watch a Rashad Evans fight or a "Queen" Mo fight. I wouldn't watch those guys fight but I'll watch Chuck Liddell fight." Chuck Liddell was recently forced into retirement by Dana White and the UFC due to his growing number of knockout losses. The guys who had built him up into this indestructible force just couldn't bear to see him take so much punishment. Jackson can be thankful that the same hasn't happened to him yet. He still possesses his iron clad chin that helped him gain the UFC light heavyweight title. He still has the speed and the skills to be competitive with most of the guys at 205 pounds, but that doesn't mean Jackson isn't about to call it quits.

Mike Brown rested, healed and ready to come back 'with a bang'
(mmamania.com)
Less than two years ago, Mike Thomas Brown was the scariest featherweight in the sport. Now, the 35-year-old mixed martial artist is fighting for job security after a dismal start to his 2011 fight campaign that saw the former WEC Featherweight Champion lose back-to-back contests to Diego Nunes (UFC 125) and Rani Yahya (UFC Fight for the Troops 2). In fact, the American Top Team standout is 2-6 since dropping his 145-pound strap to Jose Aldo at WEC 44 in late 2009, including a shocking knockout loss to Manny Gamburyan at WEC 48 just a couple of months later.

More than he made in his last mixed martial arts fight. That's according to Joey Gilbert, Jeff Lacy's manager, who gave Bloody Elbow the scoop on the cash flow distribution in the Diaz vs. Lacy fight that might be going down later this year.

Del Rosario's trainer says fighter facing legal distractions, potentially difficult recovery
(mmajunkie.com)
Shane Del Rosario (11-0 MMA, 3-0 SF) isn't in the clear just yet. The Strikeforce heavyweight was involved in an April 14 automobile accident when an allegedly intoxicated driver struck his car, which was waiting at a stoplight in Laguna Niguel, Calif. Now Del Rosario's trainer, Colin Oyama, said there's some concern whether or not the undefeated heavyweight will ever return to action, and he's facing some distracting legal proceedings while helping to prosecute the woman that hit him.

McCrory planning return to MMA after almost 2-yr hiatus
(mixedmartialarts.com)
When Tamdan McCrory was last seen in the Octagon, he was on the losing end of a split decision against John Howard at UFC 101. It was his second loss in three fights, and the fighter known as “The Barn Cat” had gone 2-3 since starting his professional mixed martial arts career with nine straight wins. Even though McCrory, a native of Cortland, N.Y., has not fought since his loss to Howard more than a year and a half ago, he has stayed busy helping MMA develop in his home state. He operates out of CNY MMA, which he co-owns. The gym has three locations in New York: Cortland, Binghamton and Watertown.

Ellenberger healing following successful surgery, eyes Top 10 opponent in return
(mmajunkie.com)
Jake Ellenberger is a lucky man. Rather than a mass of ravaged bone and tendon, he broke a single metacarpal on his left hand – the fourth one, to be exact – when he knocked out Sean Pierson this past Saturday at UFC 129. He'll be able to hit stuff again in six to eight weeks following corrective surgery he underwent Tuesday. That means no zombie hand, as recently seen with UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz's left paw following months of abuse. As for who Ellenberger (25-5 MMA, 4-1 UFC) is eyeing following his fourth-consecutive win in the UFC, he told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that he'd like a top-10 opponent and feels he's earned the opportunity.

With Tristar training, UFC 129 win, Rory Macdonald looks to move up the ladder
(mmajunkie.com)
Rory MacDonald may have just needed a change in scenery. A half-year after moving from his hometown of Kelowna, British Columbia to Montreal, Quebec, to work with Firas Zahabi at Tristar Gym, the Canadian welterweight is hitting his stride. With a key victory over Nate Diaz (13-7 MMA, 8-5 UFC) this past Saturday at UFC 129, the 21-year-old MacDonald (11-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) feels he's ready for the best the division has to offer. Yet he said his skills are still a work in progress, which means he's going to be one scary guy in two or three years. "I have many years ahead of me, and I have a lot to learn," MacDonald today told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio). "I'm going to be much sharper every time you see me in the octagon because my life is training, literally."

Veteran announcer Gus Johnson, who has covered Strikeforce events on Showtime and CBS as well as EliteXC events in the past, will no longer be working with CBS Sports after 16 years of employment: NICE! Jason 'Mayhem' Miller Upset About Being Unaware Of Strikeforce, CBS Ban
(sbnation.com)
May 3, 2011 - I've tried to be sober about criticism of Strikeforce. As an organization with limited financial or logistical capacity, I've found their shortcomings to be as real as they are understandable. However, there's nothing reasonable about the alleged treatment given to Jason Miller during his last year in the Strikeforce. While the controversial fighter and TV host certainly took it upon himself to squander good will from executives, that's a very different concern than being properly informed of his marginalization.

Champ Georges St. Pierre ok after UFC 129 eye injury, expected to recover
(mmajunkie.com)
Welterweight Georges St-Pierre did not sustain any permanent damage to his vision this past Saturday at UFC 129. The welterweight champion got poked in the left eye during the sixth defense of his title, which came in the event's headliner against Jake Shields (26-5-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC). Trainer Greg Jackson today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that St-Pierre (22-2 MMA, 16-2 UFC) suffered internal bleeding in the eye, which severely affected his ability to fight, but is expected to make a full recovery.

UFC 129 Results: Sickness Slowed Jose Aldo During His Bout Against Mark Hominick
(bloodyelbow.com)
Jose Aldo dominated the first round of his UFC 129 bout against Mark Hominick. Shortly after the second round started though, the champion seemed visibly tired. Commentator Joe Rogan speculated that it could be a result of a bad weight cut, bringing up that Aldo was light headed and had to excuse himself during the Q&A portion that featured the 7 UFC champs. It seems that wasn't the case though. BE Reader fafefifofo, brought up that right before Rogan interviewed Aldo, he complained to his corner that he should have taken antibiotics. Bloody Elbow's Tom Mendes of Brazil was able to confirm this

Hatsu Hioki, 'Lion' Takeshi Inoue Victorious at Shooto Tradition 2011
(bloodyelbow.com)
Japanese featherweight kingpin Hatsu Hioki, considered by many to be one of the best featherweight fighters in the world, extended his winning streak to four as he defeated King of the Cage bantamweight champion Donald Sanchez in non-title action at Shooto Tradition 2011 this past weekend. Hioki impressively slapped on a triangle choke from full mount before transitioning to his back at the 1:36 mark of the second round to secure the victory. Hioki's future is still up in the air at this point. The 27-year-old Nagoya-born grappler hasn't mentioned any plans to move stateside to the UFC, but his 12-1-1 record over the last three-and-a-half years would suggest that the time has come for him to tread into deeper waters. With regional stars like Marlon Sandro, Eduardo Dantas, and Michihiro Omigawa making their way stateside, it seems inevitable that Hioki would do the same.

UFC 129 results: Nate Diaz 'probably' dropping back down to lightweight after loss to Rory MacDonald
(mmamania.com)
Nate Diaz has apparently worn out his welcome in the welterweight division. The younger brother of Nick Diaz initially had a strong showing with consecutive stoppages in his first two 170-pound fights, against Rory Markham and Marcus Davis, respectively, but has now lost back-to-back fights to strong grapplers in Dong Hyun Kim and Rory MacDonald. Diaz's coach, Cesar Gracie, tells MMAmania.com his fighter out of the "209" will likely return to 155-pounds
