5oz of Pain Josh Kosheck interview.
(fiveouncesofpain.com)
Following his recent win over Dustin Hazelett at UFC 82 in Columbus, Ohio, welterweight contender Josh Koscheck officially became a free agent. FiveOuncesOfPain.com (www.FiveOuncesOfPain.com) was recently granted an opportunity to speak with Koscheck but when asked about his current contract status he made it clear that he has every intention of working out a new contract with the UFC. During the course of the interview, Koscheck also renewed his campaign for a match against former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes while also taking the opportunity to respond to recent comments made about him by Diego Sanchez.

Who's No. 2 at 205?
(sherdog.com)
All too often, being No. 2 in the world just doesn't cut it. Go ahead and ask John Kerry or the New England Patriots, two recent examples that second place is really just the first loser. In MMA, however, where the No. 1 light heavyweight spot has been defiantly claimed by a howling, chained figure called Rampage, second best will have to do. MMA debates can rage on for decades -- just ask an old timer: Gracie or Sakuraba? -- and so it only makes sense that with a clear No. 1, the discussion of No. 2 begins. For the fighters, this isn't a discussion of second best (they all think they're the best) as much as it is a discussion of who's in line for the next title shot. With Quinton Jackson the undeniable top 205 pounder in the world, let's take a look at the potential candidates, in no particular order, for No. 2.

‘Spider' Silva Angry with Okami
(sherdog.com)
Rising off the deck, Anderson Silva's invincibility felt imperiled. With scorecards reflecting Silva's first dropped round since joining the UFC, the Brazilian stalker stood opposite Dan Henderson , as real a test as there is at 185 pounds, taking the advice of trainers with the attitude of someone meandering his way through a stick of gum. Perhaps it's simple to maintain poise when truth has revealed no one can mess with you. Not right now, at least. Henderson, some said, was the fighter to derail Silva's impressive run. It didn't happen because, as the UFC champ sees it, he was just better.

Cro Cop’s *New* New Opponent; DREAM Rules Announced
(cagepotato.com)
Yoshihiro Nakao must have just realized he had a previous engagement or something, because DREAM is now saying that Tatsuya Mizuno will instead be taking on Mirko Filipovic at DREAM’s debut show this Saturday in Japan. And is Mizuno a worthy opponent for Cro Cop? Oh, sure! I mean, after all, we’re talking about a guy with a 4-2 record in Pancrase, who’s been previously stomped by Thiago Silva and UFC washout Assuerio Silva. He should present a stiff challenge to Mirko — still, we’re calling it for Cro Cop via head kick KO, nine seconds into round one. But fortunately, we think this opponent will finally stick, and we hope Mizuno can train hard over the next four days by taking lots of naps. It’ll be an honor just to meet Filipovic’s left foot. One thing that Mizuno won’t have to worry about is being soccer kicked when he’s down. Nightmare of Battle has a translation of the DREAM rules, which work out like this : — 10 minute first round, 5 minute second round, 90 seconds between rounds. — Fights are judged in their entirety and no draws are possible. — Stomps and soccer kicks to the head of a grounded opponent are not allowed, but knees to the head of a grounded opponent are allowed. If both fighters are on the ground, head kicks are allowed. If there is a 15 kg or more weight difference, no stomps, soccer kicks, or knees to the head of a grounded opponent are allowed. Due to the sizable difference in talent, Cro Cop will also be blindfolded. And the betting line still has him as a -950 favorite…

Kim Couture To Make MMA Debut April 5
(sports.yahoo.com)
Kim Couture is set to make her MMA debut on April 5 in Chael Sonnen’s fight promotion, the Full Contact Fighting Federation. Her opponent, Jessica Cruz, will also be making her MMA debut. While this isn't exactly huge news, I thought some people may be interested. I've read on a few forums that people say she is not interested in moving into MMA so here's the proof that she is. Considering what she showed in her smoker fight, this could turn out badly. By the way, If this has been posted before then I apologize. I used the search feature and nothing came up so I decided to go ahead and post it.

Fedor a free agent? Not so fast.
(mmaweekly.com)
On Thursday, new cracks appeared in M-1 Global’s façade. Apy Echteld, a co-manager of Fedor Emelianenko and development executive in the upstart promotion, confirmed to ESPN’s Ryan Hockensmith that the top-ranked fighter and M-1 would be separating next week. Emelianenko was M-1’s first talent acquisition when the consortium of Russian and American promoters came together in October of 2007. The report on ESPN.com also stated that both Ultimate Fighting Championship president Dana White and Echteld would be open to discussions concerning the possibility of having Emelianenko face UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture in the Octagon. M-1 President and CEO Monte Cox, however, was adamant that the Russian superstar is still a part of his promotion. “As of right now, M-1 Global and Fedor are still working together,” he told MMAWeekly.com. Cox declined to comment about the ESPN article, but said M-1’s plans were still underway for its first event on American soil, a June 14 card at the Sears Center in the Chicago area, still expected to feature Emelianenko. The show has been rescheduled from a May 3 date at the Allstate Arena, also in the Chicago area. M-1’s first venture with Emelianenko, a co-promotion with Fight Entertainment Group and other Japanese promoters on New Year’s Eve, was a success according to Cox. Since then, rumors of difficulties between the American and Russian factions of the partnership have persisted. “But as of now, Fedor still belongs to M-1 Global,” stated Cox.

Tito Ortiz Casting for "Anytown Throwdown" Reality Show
(mmajunkie.com)
UFC light heavyweight Tito Ortiz will give reality television a second chance. Ortiz, who was eliminated during this past week's episode of "The Celebrity Apprentice," is currently casting for a new reality show entitled "Anytown Throwdown" for the G4 cable station. One of the show's casting consultants today revealed some details of the show exclusively to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). The reality series allows contestants to settle a dispute in the most basic of ways: they duke it up. Ortiz, who serves as the show's host, will train the participants during the build-up for each show-ending bout. However, the show's producers are still figuring out the exact details of how the fights will be structured.

‘Elite' Competition for UFC
(sherdog.com)
Tops on the list of apocalyptic harbingers: Adam Sandler's film career, Sly Stallone in yet another "Rambo," Leno routinely beating Letterman. Now you can add Kimbo Slice rubbing shoulders with Andy Rooney. The knuckle-chaffed Slice (real name Kevin Ferguson, for mass media types eager to run a background check) is about to enjoy the most expeditious journey from Miami hood to national phenomenon since Tony Montana. That's because Gary Shaw and his ProElite label saw wisdom where the UFC saw folly. Namely, if a network wants you to make creative concessions in exchange for primetime exposure, you don't puff your chest out like a blowfish. You smile, say thank you, and enjoy the opportunity.

Anderson Silva – The Quiet Man Speaks Loudly in the Octagon
(ufc.com)
It would be a fight no stadium could hold, no pay-per-view system could handle. Anderson Silva, the UFC middleweight champion and the man many believe is the best fighter on the planet, pound for pound, would finally be squaring off against the only person he has ever professed an interest in fighting… His clone.

Dan Henderson – The Drive for More
(ufc.com)
War. It’s what Dan Henderson expects every time the bell rings. Whether he’s fighting you, me, or Anderson Silva, the PRIDE 183-pound champion doesn’t look at opponents as tougher or easier – they’re all the same to him. They’re all out for the same thing he is, so the only way he can ensure that he gets to the finish line first is by working harder, drilling more times, and preparing for the worst.

Jake O’Brien Won’t Back Down
(ufc.com)
The timing couldn’t have been worse for Jake O’Brien. Fresh off the biggest win of his young mixed martial arts career over Heath Herring in January of 2007, the Indiana native had an unbeaten record, a victory over a perennial heavyweight contender, and was a couple of wins away from being in contention for the title. He was also dealing with ‘stingers’, a nerve injury usually seen on the weekly injury reports in the NFL, and something he had been experiencing since his days wrestling for Purdue. But while he would usually work through the pain, which was then followed by numbness in his arms, eventually it got to be too much.

Heath Herring – A New Beginning
(ufc.com)
The third time should have been the charm for Heath Herring. In the first round of his third bout with soon to be interim UFC heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira last July, the ‘Texas Crazy Horse’ struck ‘Minotauro’ with a kick to the face that dropped the Brazilian as if he had been shot.

Will UFC Counter With Fox?
(bloodyelbow.com)
Adam Swift at MMAPayout has this interesting tidbit in the aftermath of the CBS/Elite XC rumors:

Multiple sources have told MMAPayout.com that FOX is believed to have interest in MMA with rumors suggesting that the network even went so far as to make a bid on the UFC during recent negotiations. UFC President Dana White alluded to an unidentified network bidder in an interview with Steve Cofield earlier this month.
