MFC 30 results and review
(addictedmma.com)
MFC 30: Cobb catches Fickett with first-round finish, Davis, Westcott, Lima among other winners at M Brian Cobb survived a series of serious submission threats, turned the tide of his fight in a quick flash, and scored a surprising TKO victory over Drew Fickett in the co-main event of the Maximum Fighting Championship’s MFC 30: Up Close & Personal on Friday night. The event aired live on HDNet Fights before a packed house at the Mayfield Convention Centre in Edmonton, Alberta. Cobb (19-6), who was making his MFC debut, was in deep trouble after being taken down in the corner with Fickett eyeing a fast submission victory. Fickett (41-14) looked to have the win sewn up as he took Cobb’s back, secured a body lock, and went for a rear-naked choke followed by a neck crank. But “The Bandit” eventually slithered out of harm’s way and turned into Fickett’s guard to begin raining down right hands. When Fickett’s head bounced off the mat for the second time, referee Vern Gorman stepped in to halt Cobb’s attack with just 16 seconds left in the first round. “Without a doubt, the biggest win of my career,” said Cobb, the Bakersfield, California, product who racked up his fourth straight victory. “It was a true honor to fight Drew Fickett and I am extremely happy with this win.”

McKee out of fight with Aoki; search for replacement is on. (Jami Varner in?)
(sherdog.com)
Initially, MMAJunkie.com reported on Monday that McKee (Pictured) had withdrawn from the bout due to visa issues. However, Dream official Mike Kogan asserted that visa problems were not the reason the fight fell apart. According to Kogan, Monday’s report was how he found out that the fight was no longer a go. “That’s actually why it upset me. I’ve got to read [on the Internet] that the guy who I fought for [to be on the card] is all of a sudden not fighting and making it sound like it’s beyond his control,” Kogan told Sherdog.com. “The visa issues were never a problem. I figure that part out first, before I book fighters. I have a very good travel agent that I’ve been working with forever on [acquiring] visas, even on last-minute notice. Here, we almost had three weeks, so it wasn’t an issue.” ...“He needs to come up with a better excuse as to why he isn’t fighting, because it isn’t the visa. As a matter of fact, I can get him his visa today. It’s still not too late. All he has to do is drive to [Los Angeles].” ...

Tito Ortiz helped post suspect's $500,000 bond
(lvrj.com)
Could Keith Harriman's criminal case get any stranger? The answer would seem to be yes after a hearing Friday revealed that Harriman was able to post $500,000 bond thanks to help from ultimate fighter Tito Ortiz. Harriman is charged with 12 felony counts in a plot to have his son, Dominick Harriman, 27, killed in a sordid affair involving an insurance fraud scam and a love triangle with Keith Harriman's former wife. Prosecutors have been wanting to know where Keith Harriman got the money to post the bond for his release from the Clark County Detention Center, because he had declared he was indigent and needed representation from the public defender's office. District Judge David Barker ordered Keith Harriman to say where the money came from at the hearing Friday. Harriman said Ortiz put up the bulk of the collateral needed from a bondsman. Several people were surprised to hear Ortiz's name announced by Harriman...

Wesley “Cabbage” Correira Arrested on Charges of Burglary and Theft

Former UFC fighter Wesley “Cabbage” Correira isn’t doing so well outside the cage. Correira on Thursday plead not guilty in Hilo Circuit Court to charges of first-degree burglary and second-degree theft, according to a report from Hawaii’s Tribune-Herald. Police arrested Correira on Wednesday for allegedly burglarizing a home in September 2009. NY Times: MMA makes inroads in MLB
(mixedmartialarts.com)
Adam Dunn of the Chicago White Sox, Brad Penny of the Detroit Tigers and Russell Martin of the Yankees have used the sport’s punches and kicks to improve their throwing and swinging. In addition to improving overall fitness, Martin said, mixed martial arts can make an athlete mentally tougher. “You tolerate the pain and get through it,” he said. “Mentally, I know I’m in a good place because I worked hard.” Unlike Martin, Dunn and Penny guard the secrets of their workouts as if they were team signs. Penny acknowledged training with Dan Henderson, but he declined through a Tigers spokesman to discuss his training. Dunn declined through the White Sox media-relations office.

Watch Out, MMA Drug-Cheats: The NSAC Vows to Look Closer at Your Junk
(cagepotato.com)
You know, when I woke up this morning, I never expected to read a news story involving Kevin Randleman‘s possibly-fake penis. But unfortunately, I did — and since I can’t get that horrible image out of my head, you’re going to have to hear about it too. Here’s Nevada State Athletic Commission Executive Director Keith Kizer talking to MMAJunkie about the infamous Randleman-at-PRIDE 32 situation, which was the last time that his commission’s testing body has been burned by fake urine: Kizer said Randleman’s deception began with the collection of his sample. “What he did was he grabbed the inner-thigh of his shorts, kind of pulled it open, stuck out what we thought was the tip of his penis – it was the same color as the rest of his skin – and then urinated in the cup and gave it to our inspector,” he said… (Ed. note: See, for me, that “same color as the rest of his skin” bit would be a dead giveaway. Everybody knows that wiener-skin is a shade darker than the rest of the guy it’s attached to. Come on, where were these NSAC guys licensed, anyway? Moving on…) According to Kizer, Randleman provided a sample that was consistent with human urine when tested for the presence of drugs of abuse, such as cocaine and marijuana. However, tests for performance-enhancing drugs – which measure such things as a person’s testosterone-to-epitestosterone ratio, or T/E ratio – revealed the sample to be fake. Kizer said there are similarities in Silva’s case. “Here, it’s pretty much zero,” he said. “So it’s like, ‘Wait a second. He has pretty much at an undetectable level of testosterone?’ That’s just not consistent with a human being. “So I think with Randleman and allegedly with Silva, had we given them (just) a drug test, they might have passed it. But we gave them a steroid test, and you can’t pass that with fake urine.” Following the Randleman case, the NSAC instructed its inspectors to visually confirm that a fighter is urinating in a sample cup either before or after a fight. It’s a step that ideally would deter the use of third-party urine, masking agents, and even fake penises/urine samples (such as the infamous “Whizzinator” device). But of course, even those extra measures might not be enough, as Thiago Silva (ALLEGEDLY!) proved at UFC 125. As Kizer said, “I we think might have to take it a step further…It might be a situation where inspectors have to go really close and look.” Ugh. I get pee-shy when there’s another dude two urinals away from me. Imagine trying to piss when Keith Kizar’s face is mere inches away from your crotch. And once again, one bad apple spoils it for everybody else, forever. (See also: Airport security.) Hope you’re happy, Thiago.

Round 5 Releases Another Series of MMA Action Figures That *Vaguely* Resemble Fighters They’re Modeled After
(cagepotato.com)
Keeping with its tradition of producing head-scratchingly non-resembling miniature renditions of MMA fighters and personalities, Round 5 announced today the release of its sixth series of action figures. Instead of posting a photo of the latest wave of figures, who, besides their hairstyles and accessories, really don’t capture the likenesses of the people they’re based on (at all), we figured we’d let you decide who they *really* look like. Give us your best guesses. SEE THE LINK FOR THE PICTURES As far as we can discern, their catalogue includes: Ryan Gosling, Dexter, Gabriel Gonzaga, John Lithgow, Roger Lodge, Samuel Jackson from Black Snake Moan, Rick Dees, Marlon Brando, Kirby Puckett, Meatloaf, Miguel Torres, Brett Favre, Ray-J, Paulie from Rocky, Gabriel Gonzaga, Eddie Van Halen (or Jeff Cain), Chris Klein, Wesley “Cabbage” Correira, the dude from Avatar, Gabriel Gonzaga and a blow-up doll…
