Vinny Magalhaes nixes retirement plans, meets Jeff Monson in November
Vinny Magalhaes has decided against retirement after all.
Magalhaes (10-7, 1 NC) has agreed to meet Jeff Monson (49-15-1) in a heavyweight bout on Nov. 9 in Hawaii, the fighter confirmed with MMAFighting.com. The fight will be a part of the Global Warrior Challenge 2: USA vs. Brazil event.
"I never really thought of retiring," he said. "I made those comments within 24 hours after I had lost a fight, so I was still a little frustrated, and I was being too emotional with my responses. That's why I haven't said a thing since. I needed to clear my mind before starting to speak about my next moves."
Nik Lentz used Fight of the Night bonus money to pay for father's life-saving surgery
The telephone rang on Christmas Eve, as Nik Lentz was headed to a friend's home for a holiday party. He saw the phone number of his manager, Monte Cox, appear on his caller ID.
Lentz, a UFC fighter, wasn't expecting to hear from Cox. When he saw who it was, he briefly wondered why he'd be getting a call from Cox on Christmas Eve.
Perhaps, he thought, Cox was calling with holiday wishes. Or, he surmised, Cox had a fight offer to present that might have been good news.
Lentz answered and Cox's familiar voice came on the line.
But this was not a pleasant call, definitely one that Cox did not want to make...

Anderson Silva vs. Roy Jones Jr.? The boxer and Dana White are talking

Fight Path: After father's death, undefeated Mark Cherico ultimately found MMA
From his upbringing in a small Italian community in Pittsburgh – complete with the smallish houses, mountains of food and family-run businesses – Mark Cherico was very familiar with support with no questions asked.
Granted, he had experienced a difficult period in his life with some poor decisions, but that only came after losing his father to colon cancer when he was in the sixth grade. By the time he was in his early 20s, he got another dose of that unconditional support, and it came at the right time.
"Right after high school, I was working at a Giant Eagle as a prep cook, and I thought I would end up doing culinary arts," Cherico told MMAjunke.com (www.mmajunkie.com). "I got off work one day, and my neighbor was coming out of his truck with a big bag of gear.
"I asked him what it was for, for boxing or something? He said he trained mixed martial arts. I knew about it, and I thought it sounded like it would be good to try. He said, 'OK, I'll meet you in your garage in an hour.'"
