A Look Back At Japanese MMA In '07
(sherdog.com)
While it looked like 2007 was a good year for MMA in Japan, scandals tainted what could've been a banner year-the Akiyama-Sakuraba controversy, tabloid scandals, and the "death" of PRIDE FC.

The Year in European MMA
(sherdog.com)
2007 was an outstanding year for European MMA. The UFC returned to the U.K. for the first time in almost three years. Meanwhile Fedor Emelianenko, arguably the strongest fighter to ever grace a ring, was scarce inside the squared circle but still dominated the headlines. Last but not least, there was a tremendous power shift on the European scene when longtime powerhouse promotions Cage Rage and M-1 Mix-Fight Championship were sold to American companies ProElite and Sibling Entertainment Group respectively. Read on for the most comprehensive roundup you'll find on the year in European MMA.

Eight Reasons to be Excited for '08
(sherdog.com)
Multi-colored confetti sprinkles to the ground ringing in the New Year for whiskey-clutching MMA fans. Before a single tear rolls down their cheeks because they may not live up to resolutions of moving out of mom's basement or submitting Dean Lister they should consider these eight reasons, listed in no particular order, as to why 2008 should be an exceptional year.

Aoki Ready for Calvancante
(sherdog.com)
Current Shooto middleweight champion Shinya Aoki who will face Gesias Calvancante at the Yarennoka! New Year's Eve card supported by M-1 Global, held an open training session at the DEEP Dojo on Wednesday. Though he is known as one of the most dangerous submission artists in the world, today's open training session was held in a rather unique style.

MMA Talk
(sportingnews.com)
Welcome back to MMA Talk. It is time for my second installment of rankings. This time I will go with what I consider the toughest division to rank: Light Heavyweight Division. There is a clear cut number 1 but everyone after that is a jumbled mess.

CNBC Documentary “Ultimate Fighting: From Blood Sport to Big Time” Highlight
(mmajunkie.com)
Embedded to the right is a full and official sneak preview of CNBC’s “Ultimate Fighting: From Blood Sport to Big Time” documentary that premieres tomorrow, December 13 @ 10 pm ET. The original documentary takes “a no-holds barred look at the business behind the nation’s fastest growing sports franchise,” telling the story behind the rise of the Ultimate Fighting Championship as both a business and cultural phenomenon. From the preview video, the program apparently heavily features former UFC middleweight champion Rich “Ace” Franklin. The one hour program is reported by CNBC’s Scott Wapner, and re-airs the same night at 1AM ET in case you can’t make the first showing (or you’re a poor soul still stuck without Tivo). Looks worth checking out for sure.

Belfort Hoping for Octagon Return
(sherdog.com)
Almost three years have passed since Vitor Belfort last battled in the Octagon. After apparently resurrecting a career that was supposed to have been nothing but great when it began over 11 years ago, Belfort is ready to return to the promotional company that as he puts it, made his legacy. Belfort will meet UFC matchmaker Joe Silva on Wednesday, the Brazilian told Sherdog.com, and is specifically looking to avenge his last bout in the UFC, a split decision loss to Tito Ortiz.

New article about Sammy Vasquez with a little more information than we have had.
(sherdog.com)
Thirteen months had passed since Sam Vasquez stepped into a cage. He couldn't contain himself. Sweat from a pre-fight warm-up provided sheen to the featherweight's face. The music of Richie Valens brought a bounce to his step. Never mind that Oct. 20, 2007, gave the 35-year-old mixed martial artist a special reason to smile -- he would have regardless; it's what he did. Vasquez was a fight fanatic, so immersed in MMA that he adorned his son with the middle name "Rickson." Like others who stepped between the ropes or ducked while passing through a cage doorway, Vasquez lived for this. That is, until he no longer could. In death the MMA community, of which Vasquez considered himself a proud member, met a dedicated father who out of necessity -- and love -- got roadwork in during his lunch break and spent odd hours in quiet, empty gyms.

FOX News Give Sam Vasquez Tragedy, MMA a Fair Shake
(mmajunkie.com)
Today I appeared on “Studio B with Shepard Smith,” which airs nationally on FOX News, for a piece about Sammy Vasquez, the Houston-based fighter who recently lost his life following an October fight at a Renegades Extreme Fighting Championship show. Mixed-martial arts? The death of a fighter? FOX News? Yes, I fully expected it to be a recipe for disaster. I had about two hours’ notice for the guest spot, so I did a little studying, put out on something other than a Mizzou sweatshirt, and headed to the local TV station ready for battle.
