MMA sanctioning proposal set to move forward in MD Senate
(baltimoresun.com)
Efforts to get mixed martial arts sanctioned in Maryland appear on track after a senate committee showed no signs of opposition yesterday to a bill that would give the state athletic commission regulatory power over the sport. The committee on education, health and environmental affairs likely will decide by Friday whether to forward the bill to a vote by the entire state senate, said sponsor Joan Carter Conway, a Baltimore Democrat. But no one spoke against the legislation at yesterday's hearing in Annapolis. Senators posed only a few questions about safety regulations. Conway said Maryland is losing out because the sport is sanctioned in Washington and in such nearby states as Virginia, Delaware and New Jersey. "We're sitting in the middle of our region, where all of our dollars are going elsewhere," she said.

The Road Back
(ufc.com)
August 25 is a day that Josh Koscheck would like to forget. Four months earlier at UFC 69, Kos dominated the once-darling of the welterweight division, Diego Sanchez, to firmly establish himself among the 170-lb elite. He used his world-class wrestling skills to keep the fight on the feet and relied on his rapidly improving standup to pick apart the former TUF winner.

The Spider Goes to Hollywood
(cpcmovies.co.uk)
Anderson Silva was never supposed to be a champion. Instead, he was supposed to come into Ultimate Fight Night on June 28, 2006 and go down as a big win for fast-rising middleweight star Chris Leben, who seemed to be on his way to a title shot against then-champion Rich Franklin. But Silva took his opportunity on a big stage seriously and came in and knocked out the Ultimate Fighter (TUF) veteran. Had that fight between Leben and Franklin actually taken place, there is a very real possibility that Leben would have been flattened by the champ like his TUF compatriot Nate Quarry was at UFC 56. But Silva earned the title shot, trained his backside off, and went into UFC 64 and stunned the champion with a first round knockout. And the rest is history. Well, it’s more like current events.

France Legalizes MMA
(mmaweekly.com)
France has become quite a hot bed for mixed martial arts talent over the years, but not one that immediately springs to mind on the world stage. Why? Because MMA as a sport in France has been banned for many years; mainly for political reasons and to protect the sanctity of traditional martial arts, but the times they are a changing.

CPC Movies: Who Says It's too Late for a 2008 Preview?
(cpcmovies.co.uk)
2007 turned out to be the biggest year in the history of MMA, and it had some of the best fights in a long time. I dubbed 07 as the “Year of the Lightweights,” with so many great fights coming from the 155-pound division, and we start out this year with a great lightweight fight at the first event of the year. UFC 80 featured Joe “Daddy” Stevenson taking on BJ Penn for the UFC Lightweight title. Penn defeated Stevenson in the second round by submission and will now face Sean Sherk at UFC 84 for the lightweight title. We’re already more than a month into the year, but who says it’s too late to do a preview? 2008 should be yet another great year for MMA, and I look for the sport to take even more steps into the mainstream of American and world acceptance. I’ll break down the situation in each of the six major weight classes as well as some of the top stories to look for in the upcoming year.

What's Tickling Mark DellaGrotte's Toes
(sherdog.com)
That first night, as Mark DellaGrotte lay in the floor on a rice mat, trying to sleep and wondering what he was doing on the other side of the planet, he realized that the creatures brushing by his feet were rats. Rats and other things. There was no door to the too-small room in which he was packed with 13 others. Anything could scurry in from the 98-degree night. DellaGrotte himself, for instance. Twenty-four and traveling the world. Had never left the country, then on a plane and off a plane and into the sweltering dark of a different continent. How, again, did he get here?

Arnold Classic Officially Adds Amateur MMA
(mmaweekly.com)
The Arnold Classic, taking place in Columbus, Ohio from Feb. 29 through March 2, celebrates many forms of fitness and martial arts. This year will mark the debut of mixed martial arts at the expo, as an amateur event will take place and champions in multiple weight classes will be crowned. Celebrating its 20th year anniversary, the Arnold Classic has always been a home to martial arts and with the growth of MMA throughout the world the amateur tournament this year is nothing short of historical. Legendary martial artist Terrance “Tokey” Hill, who organizes and leads the charge for the martial arts portion of the Arnold Classic, lobbied to have MMA included in this year’s event and now it is a reality. The event will run alongside many traditional martial arts programs at the Arnold Classic including Tae Kwon Do, Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, and San Shou. MMA will debut with an eight-man tournament represented by fighters and teams from across the world.

CRO COP TO K-1!!!
(fightline.com)

As reported yesterday, Mirko Cro Cop is going to be in Japan today at a press conference to make an announcement regarding his future. What we didn’t know was what the announcement was going to be, but now Dave Meltzer from the Wrestling Observer is reporting that Cro Cop is going to be at a press conference that’ll be held by FEG. The Fighting Entertainment Group (FEG) actually owns K-1 and its sub-division HERO’s. FEG was going to hold a press conference today prior to the Cro Cop announcement but now it only makes sense that he would be in Japan today. A translation of K-1 HERO’s official website says, “big-time athletes are scheduled to fight in an emergency visit to Japan” and by “fight” we assume that it actually means appear at the press conference. I’m sure you’re all wondering “isn’t Mirko Cro Cop under contract with the UFC?” The simple answer is yes, but Meltzer is reporting that the UFC has been in the process of attempting to restructure Mirko’s contract which would force him to take a paycut. Obviously nobody would willingly give up money so it looks like the UFC may let the former PRIDE open weight Grand Prix champion out of his six-fight deal after only three fights. We’ll have more details on this situation as we get it, but for now it looks like the next Mirko Cro Cop fight we’ll see will be in a ring and not a cage.

He was not supposed to survive this long. He cannot breathe normally on his own and does not do well when he is touched. And yet, here is Kaiden, brought into this world by Caesarean section Oct. 6 weighing 1 pound, 1 ounce. He was 11 inches long. Kaiden was born 15 weeks early. He has grown to 3 1/2 pounds, and about 14 inches, but his survival is still not assured. He is still breathing with lungs that do not work right, and he's housed in an isolette, one of those clear plastic boxes. His parents have never held him, but are at his side every day. The first thing on his big sister's Christmas list is for him to leave the neonatal intensive care unit at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson and go home to Laurel, 90 miles to the southeast. That is not going to happen soon. Which means Shaun and Mark Blakeney needed to squeeze a Christmas tree into their room at the Ronald McDonald House on UMC's campus. "Here it is," said Shaun. "This is our Christmas tree." She was pointing at a small, felt-like ornament hanging from a picture hook on the wall. The Blakeneys have been at Ronald McDonald House since not long after Kaiden's birth. Shaun said doctors have told her to expect him to be in the hospital until at least February. He needs the kind of specialized care that is available nowhere in Mississippi but UMC. It would be impossible to drive all the way from Laurel to Jackson every day, so the Blakeneys thank goodness for Ronald McDonald House. "We are so blessed to be here and be on this campus to be close to our son," Shaun said. "It's a hidden secret." They are one of more than a dozen families that will probably be there over Christmas. Tippy Garner, the house's events and development coordinator, said about 500 families each year stay there. The program is designed for families who are from outside the Jackson area and whose children are in town for lifesaving medical care. Often, that means a child injured in a car accident, a cancer patient or a severely premature baby such as Kaiden. The house has 16 hotellike rooms, four full kitchens, a large dining room and other accommodations. It is almost always full or close to it. Sometimes there's a waiting list. More than half the families who stay there pay nothing; the rest pay only $8 a day. Garner said operating expenses are taken care of through donations and volunteers. The program has only four full-time employees and two part-timers. If not for Ronald McDonald house, the Blakeneys might be in serious trouble. Shaun, 37, has suffered from thyroid problems her whole life, she said. She was having trouble over the summer, and was in and out of the doctor's office many times. On one occasion, they shocked her with news of her pregnancy. She was already four months along. She and Mark, 29, who'd met last year when they both worked at the mall in Laurel, married and planned for their future. They'd raise Shaun's daughter, Laken Davis, 9, and their new baby together. But Shaun's health problems persisted. Surgery was scheduled for February to remove her thyroid. And then, her blood pressure measured 230 over 200. Doctors worried about a condition called preeclampsia, hypertension during pregnancy, that can harm both the mother and the baby. In fact, Kaiden was having what are called brain bleeds. He needed to be born if he was to survive. The day before the surgery to give birth to Kaiden, the experts prepared the Blakeneys for the worst. "They told me he would probably live 30 minutes," Shaun said. He lived, though just barely. He looked like a pink skeleton when he was born. "He was little bitty," said Shaun. "He could fit in your hand." Mark commuted back and forth between Jackson and the Coast for three weeks until he finished training to become a truck driver. Now, both he and Shaun are at the Ronald McDonald House full time. They spend all day, every day by Kaiden's bedside, they said. They sleep at Ronald McDonald. They will celebrate Christmas there with family, who will make the drive from Laurel, they said. Laken, who will be 10 next month, has been staying with her grandmother. She visits on the weekends. "Santa knows where she's at," Shaun said

- Shawn Bias realeased, starts road to recovery
(mmaweekly.com)
Shawn Bias is on his way to making a full recovery from injuries allegedly sustained in a recent struggle with Oroville police. The former Palace Fighting Championship featherweight champion was released from the Oroville Hospital on Wednesday and spoke about his incident for the first time. Bias allegedly ran from officers outside an¬ apartment complex in Oroville at about 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 20. Oroville police were called to investigate a disturbance and upon making contact with the 22-year-old mixed martial artist, Bias reportedly ran and ignored orders from police to stop or be shot by a taser. The Chico Enterprise Recorder reported that Bias was eventually caught by two officers and was tased a total of five times according to Oroville Police Chief Kirk Trostle. Some of the tasings were “drive stuns” which involves the taser making direct contact with the victim. Bias was restrained and taken to the Oroville Hospital where he was treated for a heart attack and went into kidney failure. Good to hear he is going to make a full recovery, especially after being given only a 30% chance to survive.
