We should not minimize the economic impact of MMA matches, especially on the cities that host these events. At a 2007 MMA match in Columbus, Ohio, some 40 percent of attendees came from outside of the state. That means busy hotels, restaurants and downtowns.
NCAA Champion Eric Larkin Moves To MMA
2003 NCAA Division 1 National Champion, Eric Larkin, will be making the move from wrestling to mixed martial arts in 2010, and has signed on with a manager while training for his debut fight. Wisconsin Signs MMA Regulation Bill Into Law
Wisconsin became the 43rd state to sanction mixed martial arts when Gov. Jim Doyle signed into law a bill to regulate the sport. The state's Department of Regulation and Licensing will govern the fights, adding MMA to its duties overseeing pro boxing contests. Unlike other states, Wisconsin's law passed through the legislative process in just a few months. The bill was first introduced in September 2009.
Tapout Opens Charles "Mask" Lewis Theater
TapouT officials on Monday night opened the Charles “Mask” Lewis Theater at it’s headquarters in Grand Terrace, Calif., and held it‘s inaugural event, a premiere of the movie "Unrivaled.” Named in honor of the company’s late co-founder, Charles Lewis Jr., who was tragically killed in a Newport Beach car crash in March, the 92-seat theater features tiered, stadium style seating behind a front row of leather seats. It is gladiator-themed with columns and two lion heads on each side of the screen and a chariot podium that sits in the center of a small speaking stage.

New York Times Letters to the Editor In “A Leaner Budget for Lean Times” (editorial, Jan. 20), you call mixed martial arts, which Gov. David A. Paterson is proposing to legalize, “controversial.” In fact, the sport is not only legal in all but eight states, but if it should come to New York, our State Athletic Commission already has the mechanisms in place to ensure that such competitions follow the highest guidelines of health and safety.
Afflictions motion to dismiss Fedor lawsuit denied
Fedor Emelianenko and his promotional team survived a first-round attack Monday in a legal battle that pits them against their former business partner, Affliction Entertainment. Affliction’s attorney, Michael Bassiri, confirmed to Sherdog.com that a Los Angeles federal judge had denied Affliction’s motion to dismiss several claims made in a breach of contract lawsuit filed Oct. 28 by Emelianenko and M-1 Global. The case is set to go to trial on Nov. 16.
Corey Hill Wins in Return From Leg Injury
Corey Hill, a cast member on The Ultimate Fighter 5 and former UFC lightweight, returned to action on Saturday for the first time since suffering a gruesome leg fracture to end a December 2008 UFC bout against Dale Hartt, defeating Jason Trzewieczynski by unanimous decision in a featured contest at Raging Wolf 6 in Niagara Fall, New York. UFC veteran Luigi Fioravanti was also victorious at the event, topping The Ultimate Fighter 8 contestant Shane Primm by unanimous decision. Glad he's doing well...

One of the traditional hotbeds for mixed martial arts talent, Brazil produced a number of major champions in 2009. Jose Aldo (World Extreme Cagefighting), Lyoto Machida (UFC), Bibiano Fernandes (Dream) and Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos (Strikeforce) took their place alongside Anderson Silva, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Wanderlei Silva and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, who had long ago secured their places in the sport’s Brazilian pantheon. Whoa..."Krazy Horse" Bennett Assaulted a Teammate with a Piece of Steel?
Remember when we said it would make for a better story if "Krazy Horse" Bennett's arrest for battery had actually happened at the gym where he trains? Well, in this case 'better' means much, much worse. According to details on the situation that Sherdog.com acquired from a representative of the FIT NHB gym where the incident took place, Bennett assaulted a teammate with a length of steel during a training session and had to be restrained by other fighters in the gym.
