EliteXC: Building To Make Them Buy
Fresh off of EliteXC’s Saturday night card, talk has turned to the October card and possible match-ups between Carano vs Cyborg, Diaz vs Noons, and possibly Kimbo vs Rogers. While these are certainly exciting match-ups, putting them forth as possible match-ups for the October card is a bit misguided. Doing these fights on free TV would go against the strategy laid out by DeLuca as it relates to EliteXC’s television and PPV strategy:
Doug DeLuca: Absolutely, the Pay-Per-View model is the goal for most people in this sport. So, yes, it’s our goal, too. The exact plan is broadcast television drives the Pay-Per-View. It builds stars. SHOWTIME to CBS. CBS to Pay-Per-View. Build stars, build the interest in the stars, let people know even more that these fighters – the guys and gals — are people and they have real stories and make people care about them and drive the Pay-Per-View. So that’s absolutely the goal. As far as timing goes, you’ll probably see a Pay-Per-View from us early in ‘09.
Nielsen Ratings Saturday, July 26: EliteXC MMA on CBS Had No Kick
FOX won another lame Saturday night with the time-tested duo of Cops and America’s Most Wanted. Normally, because it’s Saturday, and because it’s a Saturday in the middle of the summer there wouldn’t be a whole lot to say. And indeed, FOX was the only network to crack above a 1.0 rating among 18-49 year olds for the whole night.
And there really still isn’t much to say except for this: EliteXC Saturday Night Fights without any buzz surrounding Kimbo Slice performed much worse without Kimbo than it did with him. CBS initial foray into MMA didn’t draw a slew of viewers but at least performed well in the 18-49 and 18-34 demos.
CRIS CYBORG READY FOR BASZLER, U.S. DEBUT
Female MMA fighter Cris Cyborg Santos from Chute Boxe academy finally got her VISA and will face Shayna Baszler as part of the second edition of CBS-EliteXC Saturday Night Fights this weekend.
She arrived early to the U.S. this time, staying in Huntington Beach and training with Master Rafael Cordeiro for her fight against Baszler, who comes in with a record of 9-4 with all of her victories coming by submission.
JAKE SHIELDS FINALLY GETS HIS TITLE SHOT
Jake Shields has been considered one of the world’s best 170-pound fighters for the last few years. He is perhaps the best welterweight not currently fighting in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Shields, the MMAWeekly No. 7 ranked welterweight in the world, will be fighting for the vacant EliteXC crown against Nick Thompson this Saturday night.
Shields recently joined MMAWeekly Radio to discuss his preparation for his upcoming bout. “Training is going great,” said Shields. “I'm peaking out perfectly. I'm ready to fight. I haven't fought in way too long. Almost nine months. I'm super excited. I think Nick Thompson is a good opponent and I'm excited to be fighting on CBS as well.”
EXC Weigh-In Results
The EliteXC weigh-ins for tomorrow night's event were completed a short time ago. Everyone made weight so the full 11 fight card is now official.
EILERS GETS SECOND CHANCE IN ELITE XC
At one time, Justin Eilers was considered a great future prospect in the Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight division.
Having amassed a solid record previous to joining the company, he won his debut in impressive fashion over Mike Kyle at UFC 49 in comeback fashion after being rocked early in the fight. Things seemed to be heading Eilers’ way.
That’s where things hit a snag.
Over the course of the coming year and a half, Eilers lost three fights in a row, including a devastating defeat to then UFC heavyweight champ Andrei Arlovski.
MISTAKES PAST, SCOTT SMITH READY FOR ROUND 2
No one in the sport of mixed martial arts can ever question the heart, determination or perseverance of current EliteXC middleweight fighter Scott Smith for his constant effort to stay in and win a fight.
During his time with the Ultimate Fighting Championship, he was involved in one of the most memorable knockouts in the promotion’s history during a bout with former “Ultimate Fighter” housemate Pete Sell.
As Sell landed a thunderous body shot that seemed to crumble his opponent, Smith jumped up with a huge punch that sent Sell crashing to the canvas. After following up with another shot before the referee stopped the fight, Smith instantly fell down in the cage, still feeling the effects of the punch he endured before unloading his own fight finishing shot to his opponent.
David Douglas vs. Marlon Mathias added as swing bout to CBS “Saturday Night Fights”
Stockton, Calif. – EliteXC officials announced today during a pre-fight press conference for this weekend’s CBS’ telecast of “Saturday Night Fights” that a lightweight bout between David “Tarzan” Douglas and Marlon Mathias has been added to the card.
The swing bout will only air on Saturday if one or all of the three fights before the main event of Robbie Lawler vs. Scott Smith ends early. If there is no room on the telecast, the swing bout will take place immediately after the main event.
Gina Carano Fighting Kelly Kobald In October ?
Sherdog is reporting that Gina Carano’s management has confirmed to them that she will return on EliteXC’s October 4 card which is likely to be televised on CBS. Carano last fought on May 31 when she defeated Kaitlin Young via TKO at the end of the second round at EliteXC: Primetime, the first ever MMA card on network television. Young’s eye was extremely swollen at the end of the second round and she was deemed unable to continue by the doctors at ringside.
Kelly Kobald, a fighter who trains out of Minnesota Martial Arts, has been rumored as the possible opponent for Carano for the October show. Minnesota Martial Arts is the same camp that Kaitlin Young fights out of so she should be well prepared for the fight if she is indeed Carano’s next opponent. Kobald is a veteran of Bodog Fight and has dropped her last two fights to Tara LaRosa and Julie Kedzie. Before that, Kobald was on a seventeen fight win streak.
EliteXC trying to lure Javi Vazquez out of retirement
After a planned swing bout between lightweight competitors Malaipet Team Diamond and David Douglas fell through after Malaipet was forced to bow out due to injury, EliteXC officials have been left scrambling to find a replacement in time for CBS’s second-ever telecast of “Saturday Night Nights” this past Saturday.
According to a source speaking to FiveOuncesOfPain.com on the condition of anonymity, EliteXC had attempted in recent days to lure Javier Vazquez out of retirement.
Vazquez, a renowned competitive grappler who compiled an impressive 12-2 record during an injury-plagued MMA career, announced his retirement immediately following his first round submission over J.C. Pennington during a ShoXC event last October.
Dave Herman likely to return in September
Undefeated EliteXC heavyweight title contender Dave “Pee Wee” Herman is expected to fight for the promotion again in September. FiveOuncesOfPain.com was informed of the news by Herman’s manager, Mike Camp, of F1 Management.
An opponent and a date are not yet known, but Herman could compete during an EliteXC event tentatively planned for Friday, Sept. 26.
The former Indiana-Bloomington standout wrestler had been in the running to challenge Antonio Silva this weekend for the vacant EliteXC heavyweight title, but Herman was unable to accept the fight due to a prior commitment.
Robbie Lawler vs Scott Smith (1st fight) video now on ProElite.com
Elite XC Middleweight Champion “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler and Scott “Hands of Steel” Smith slugged it out in Newark, N.J. on May 31 during the network mixed martial arts debut on CBS.
It was without a doubt on its way to becoming one of the best fights of the year before it ended because of an inadvertent eye poke, resulting in a disappointing no contest.
The outcome forced Elite XC officials to set up an immediate rematch, which will be the main event on CBS this Saturday in Stockton, Calif., during Elite XC: “Unfinished Business” event.
'Wildman' is preparing for the biggest fight of his life
When Thomas “Wildman” Denny takes on Nick Diaz at the second CBS- EliteXC Saturday Night of Fights set to take place on July 26th, there is likely to be a lot of emotion in the ring. First off, anyone with a nickname like Wildman—and keep in mind that Denny’s nickname is deserved as it relates to fighting—no doubt fights with a lot of fervor anyway; and of course, Nick Diaz has never been one to come into the ring with a stoic expression and a ho-hum attitude. Second, Denny has been outspoken in regard to Diaz’s inability to make weight in his last fight against Muhsin Corbbrey, citing, “if you sign a contract that says you're going to weigh 160, you should come in at 160, not 169 (the weight that Diaz came in at). So, I don't know, I just think it's unprofessional.” Thus, Diaz probably isn’t thrilled with his opponent to begin with.
EliteXC has plans for PPV
During a recent media conference call, Doug DeLuca confirmed that EliteXC is looking to get onto pay-per-view.
Pay-per-view is our goal,” said Deluca, “Broadcast TV builds stars for PPV.”
Really, at this point, EliteXc only has one bankable PPV draw in Kimbo Slice. In order to protect Slice and generate decent PPV numbers, the best possible opponent is probably Ken Shamrock. Without Slice, I’m not sure how they put on a show that people would pay for. A brother vs. brother fight of Ken vs. Frank Shamrock could generate some interest, but I don’t think it would be enough to call the show a success.
EliteXC's Shayna Baszler fighting for what's hers
Fight of the night. Those four words are music to the ears of a professional fighter and words that have more often than not been associated with the lone female bouts on some recent high-profile fight cards.
This trend could very well continue as the "Queen of Spades" Shayna Baszler (9-4) faces off against Chute Boxe's Cristiane "Cyborg" (4-0) Santos on July 26 as CBS and EliteXC preset "Unfinished Business."
The event will be held Saturday at the Stockton Arena in Stockton, Calif., and will be shown live on CBS with undercard matches airing on Showtime.
MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) recently had a chance to speak with Baszler as she prepares for her network television debut in a fight that many consider the stepping stone to the first-ever EliteXC women's championship fight.
EliteXC/CBSPreview: Robbie Lawler and the H.I.T. Squad
I found this short, but cool video that's a look into the HIT Squad Gym in Granite City, Illinois as well as Robbie Lawler's training camp. The most interesting part of the story is where they show "fighter dorms" that are only 100 yards away from the gigantic training facility. In an entire separate building, fighters are able to live for what has to be a fraction of the cost an apartment in town would be while staying extraordinarily close to their training facility. For those who don't recall, Hughes & Co. purchased a small former Army base that was no longer in use to set up the first HIT Squad gym. While the location of Granite City isn't that ideal, the amount the dollar will extend in that part of the country is astounding. Fighters are really able to live in very comfortable accomodations in facilities that can house equipment and training areas as expansive as your imagination can be. Impressive.
