Fans get to vote for Bellator 58's fourth televised fight, three fights available
(mmajunkie.com)
While initially concerned that Saturday's Bellator 58 broadcast wouldn't have time for a fourth bout, Bellator officials have changed their tune. In fact, they're letting fans vote and decide which bout will take the final spot on the night's MTV2/EPIX broadcast. You can choose from middleweights Brett Cooper (15-7 MMA, 2-2 BFC) vs. Jared Hess (11-3-1 MMA, 4-3 BFC), 115-pounders Jessica Aguilar (11-4 MMA, 2-1 BFC) vs. Lisa Ellis-Ward (14-6 MMA, 2-1 BFC), or bantamweights Farkhad Sharipov (13-4 MMA, 1-1 BFC) vs. Fabio Mello (8-6 MMA, 1-0 BFC). Whichever fight gets the most votes on Bellator CEO and Chairman Bjorn Rebney's Twitter account (@BjornRebney) will be pulled from the Spike.com prelims and promoted to the televised main card, which airs from Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla. Bellator officials told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) voting concludes on Friday at noon ET (9 a.m. PT), and the winning bout will be revealed later in the day at official Bellator 58 fighter weigh-ins. The festivities stream live on MMAjunkie.coma at 5 p.m. ET.

Bellator 58 adds Sandro vs. Dias to main card, prelims fill out
(mmajunkie.com)
The fight card for this weekend's Bellator 58 event is official with nine fights, including three that air as part of MTV2/EPIX's main card. Joining previously announced fights on the main card is a featherweight contest between Marlon Sandro (19-3 MMA, 2-1 BFC) and Rafael Dias (15-8-2 MMA, 0-0 BFC). The prelims, which stream on Spike.com, feature a host of notables. Bellator 58 takes place this Saturday at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla. Because of a headlining five-round title fight between lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez and Michael Chandler, the night's televised main card will feature just three fights instead of the usual four, officials confirmed with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). However, as time permits, additional bouts will be shown either via delay or in highlights form. The full Bellator 58 card includes: MAIN CARD (MTV2) Champ Eddie Alvarez vs. Michael Chandler (for lightweight title) Champ Hector Lombard vs. Trevor Prangley (non-title, 195-pound contest) Rafael Dias vs. Marlon Sandro PRELIMINARY CARD (Spike.com) Jessica Aguilar vs. Lisa Ellis-Ward Brett Cooper vs. Jared Hess Valdir Araujo vs. Ailton Barbosa Cosmo Alexander vs. Avery McPhatter Jonas Billstein vs. Herbert "Whisper" Goodman Fabio Mello vs. Farkhad Sharipov

M-1 Global says Bellator signee Vasilevsky still under contract, threatens legal action
(mmajunkie.com)
M-1 Global to Bellator: not so fast. The Russia-based promotion on Tuesday told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that a recent Bellator talent acquisition, Vyacheslav Vasilevsky (15-1 MMA, 0-0 BFC), is still under exclusive contract with M-1 until February 2013. "We were exceedingly surprised at [Tuesday's] announcement and disappointed at the lack of background work done by Bellator in this matter," wrote M-1 Global Director of Operations Evgeni Kogan in a statement. Kogan said Vasilevsky was expected to fight UFC vet Mario Miranda at an M-1 Challenge event scheduled for Saturday in Ufa, Russia, but Vasilevsky withdrew from the bout citing a lingering hand injury. He alleges Vasilevsky's manager told Bellator officials the fighter was free and clear. "We are currently working on resolving the situation with our legal counsel and will make sure that not only will Vyacheslav be appropriately handled but that this situation does not arise again," Kogan said.

Bellator 57's Ben Saunders to clash with 'teammate and neighbor' for tourney title
(mmajunkie.com)
It's Florida vs. Georgia, but don't confuse it for the "World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party." That doesn't mean there won't be plenty of cocktail consumption (albeit indoors around a cage) while a border war between Ben Saunders (12-3-2 MMA, 3-0 BFC) and Douglas Lima (20-4 MMA, 2-0 BFC) plays out inside it. The two square off in the season-five welterweight tournament finale at Saturday's Bellator 57 event, which takes place on neutral ground at Casino Rama in Rama, Ontario, Canada. The main card airs live on MTV2 (and in high-definition on EPIX) while Spike.com streams the prelims. Co-headlining the event, which airs at a special time of 7 p.m. ET/PT, is the middleweight tournament final between Alexander Shlemenko (42-7 MMA, 6-1 BFC) and Vitor Vianna (12-1-1 MMA, 2-0 BFC).

As 50th fight approaches, Bellator 57's Alexander Shlemenko recharged after title loss
(mmajunkie.com)
Vitor Vianna is the 50th opponent of Alexander Shlemenko's professional career, and he feels like he can fight another 100. But the Russian said he's still improving, and nothing brought that into focus better than a loss to current Bellator middleweight champ Hector Lombard. "Hector showed me weaknesses that I had, and all this time, I worked really hard to improve myself," Shlemenko recently told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio). Shlemenko (42-7 MMA, 6-1 BFC) vs. Vianna (12-1-1 MMA, 2-0 BFC) takes co-main-event status at Bellator 57, which takes place Saturday at Casino Rama in Rama, Ontario, Canada. The event's main card airs live at a special time of 7 p.m. ET/PT on MTV2 (and in high-definition on EPIX) while preliminary-card action streams on Spike.com.

Bellator considering more tournaments per season, elimination of non-title fights
(mmajunkie.com)
Since winning his title two-and-a-half years ago, Bellator middleweight champion Hector Lombard has defended his belt just once. The same goes for lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez. But that could soon change. As Bellator CEO and chairman Bjorn Rebeny told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com), the addition of more tournaments, the elimination of non-title fights, and continued between-seasons events all could result in the champs defending their titles more often. Bellator, of course, has carved out a niche in the MMA industry with its eight-man (and eight-woman) tournaments. The only way to win a Bellator belt or to get an opportunity to challenge for one is to win a tourney – which requires fighting three times in as little as 10 weeks. Recent tourney winner Jay Hieron recently earned the right to fight welterweight champion Ben Askren, who squeaked by with a split-decision victory at Bellator 56. It was a good, competitive fight with plenty of pre-event buzz, and many feel a rematch is in order. But Rebney said his policy isn't going to change. "Absolutely not," Rebney said. "It was a great fight ... but Jay would have to win another tournament to get another shot." Thankfully for Askren, he'll have his next challenge soon enough; a season-five welterweight tourney wraps this weekend with Bellator 57's finale between Ben Saunders and Douglas Lima. But that hasn't been the case in other weight classes. Bellator currently boasts eight champions, but despite five seasons and 56 shows, no champion has had the opportunity to defend his title more than once. Part of the reason is the infrequency of tournaments. Currently, Bellator hosts four tournaments per 12-week season (a tourney also was held during three monthly "Summer Series" events). So without top contenders continually churned out, Bellator has booked a number of "super fights" – non-title bouts pitting a champion vs. what's usually an underdog opponent. For a couple years, Bellator avoided any disasters, but this past month against veteran Travis Wiuff, light-heavyweight champion Christian M'Pumbu earned the dubious honor of becoming the first champ to lose a super fight...

With 'Pitbull' injured, Pat Curran gets Bellator champ Joe Warren in February
(mmajunkie.com)
With Patricio "Pitbull" Freire (17-1 MMA, 5-1 BFC) recovering from a second hand surgery, fellow tournament winner Pat Curran (16-4 MMA, 6-1 BFC) will get the next shot at Bellator featherweight champion Joe Warren (7-2 MMA, 5-1 BFC). Bellator CEO and chairman Bjorn Rebney today confirmed the plans with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). According to Rebney, Curran has leapfrogged Freire in the division's pecking order. His title fight with Warren in now targeted for a currently unannounced February event – one that could also feature Bellator champ Eddie Alvarez (22-2 MMA, 7-0 BFC) vs. DREAM champ Shinya Aoki (29-5 MMA, 0-0 BFC).

Eddie Alvarez vs. Shinya Aoki Rematch Booked For February, Sort Of
(bloodyelbow.com)
There have been rumors for months about Bellator staging a rematch between their lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez and the Dream lightweight champion Shinya Aoki. Today, Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney confirmed the rumors and said the bout was signed for February - on one condition (via MMA Weekly): The only hurdle left to go before the fight happens is Alvarez defending his Bellator lightweight title against tournament winner Mike Chandler in just over a week. That by no means is a gimmee. Rebney understands that and so does Alvarez. "To be completely honest, Ed has got his hands full against Mike Chandler. Mike Chandler is an absolute freak of nature in terms of his wrestling. His stand-up has really come around. Chandler’s a beast," said Rebney.

With Zoila Gurgel hurt, Carina Damm scratched from Bellator 57
(mmajunkie.com)
Carina Damm (17-8 MMA, 0-0 BFC) will not compete at next week's Bellator 57 event. The Brazilian contender was expected to face Bellator Fighting Championships female champion Zoila Gurgel (11-1 MMA, 5-0 BFC) in a non-title affair, but with Gurgel forced to withdraw in favor of surgery, Damm has been pulled as well. MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has learned from sources close to the fighter that Damm will likely be re-booked for an as-yet-undetermined December event. Bellator 57 takes place Nov. 12 at Casino Rama in Rama, Ontario, Canada. Gurgel vs. Damm was expected to air on the evening's MTV2-televised main card.

Eddie Alvarez Tried To Purchase Stake In Bellator Last Year
(bloodyelbow.com)
Loretta Hunt of Sports Illustrated recently interviewed Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez to discuss a slew of topics. One that definitely sticks out is the champion's view on the current state of the MMA market domestically. It seems that with the UFC purchasing organizations left and right, the champion got a bit antsy. So much so that he approached Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney about potentially buying into the company. It wasn't for any reason other than an investment opportunity, one that could pay off had a buy out occured. Now, a year late, the champion revisited his reasoning with Loretta saying: Originally, when the UFC purchased Strikeforce (last March), I got very on edge. I called (Bellator owner) Bjorn Rebney to ask him if there was any possible way that I could buy stake in Bellator. The way (the UFC) was buying up promotions like that, I didn't want them to come in on Bellator without me being able to capitalize on it.

Viacom buys Bellator, plans 2013 start on Spike
(usatoday.com)
MTV Networks' Spike TV channel is getting out of the Ultimate Fighting Championship's business, but the broadcaster has increased its ties to mixed martial arts. Viacom, parent of MTV Networks, bought a majority stake in Bellator Fighting Championships and will start airing the promotion's bouts on Spike in 2013, the companies told USA TODAY this week. They've had ongoing talks for about a year as they finished up various deals, and over the past month finally reached the point where they could announce the news, Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney said. Selling to Viacom's entertainment conglomerate guarantees a stable future for Bellator, said Rebney, who will remain in charge of the MMA organization. "It puts all of those cornerstones of ownership in place for us," he said. "Which is something that's been so seriously lacking in the MMA space with so many different companies, including Strikeforce and the IFL and Affliction and all the different failures that have occurred. … It alleviates those issues." Bellator is the No. 2 promotion in mixed martial arts behind market leader Zuffa, owner of UFC and Strikeforce...

Despite close Bellator 55 loss, Marcos Galvao gets 'win' bonus
(mmajunkie.com)
Despite a controversial loss in the headliner of Saturday's Bellator 55 event, Marcos Galvao isn't going home empty handed. Following a close split-decision loss to Alexis Villa in the semifinal round of Bellator's season-five bantamweight tournament, Galvao received his "win" bonus. Bellator officials confirmed the decision with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) after the event. Bellator 55 took place outside Cocopah Resort and Casino in Yuma, Ariz. The night's main card, including the Galvao (10-5-1 MMA, 1-2 BFC) vs. Villa (11-0 MMA, 2-0 BFC) headliner, aired on MTV2 (and in high-definition on EPIX). Although salary figures aren't immediately available, a fighter's "win" bonus typically enters his "show" (base) pay.
