After surviving Iron Ring debacle, Bellator 54's Brian Rogers happy in new role
(mmajunkie.com)
It only takes one Iron Ring to make you appreciate a Bellator. Middleweight Brian Rogers (8-2 MMA, 1-0 BFC) passed the quarterfinals of the promotion's season-five tournament with flying colors, knocking out Victor O'Donnell to earn a spot in the semis opposite season-two champ Alexander Shlemenko (41-7 MMA, 5-1 BFC) at Saturday's Bellator 54, which takes place at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J. Sure, fighting three times in three months is a daunting task, as anyone competing in the promotion can attest. But at least you know what you're getting into, which is more than Rogers can say about the hip-hop flavored MMA reality show that aired in 2009 and almost immediately fizzled. Then a grad student and part-time MMA fighter, Rogers was enticed by the $2,500 show/win purses offered to Iron Ring contestants. He got the feeling something was askew, though, when he showed up to UFC vet Roan Carneiro's gym in Atlanta, and the audition was an actual fight. A one-round fight, but still, there was no pay. Plus, the producers wanted him to fight at heavyweight. He was at 215 pounds, but only because he'd been given three days' notice and they didn't tell him to cut weight. "I'm not fighting at heavyweight for no money in the middle of Atlanta," he told the show's producers. Rogers got the call anyway to be on the show, which was taped on a Monday night in New Orleans. The dressing rooms were right next to the VIP rooms, and the smell of marijuana smoke wafted in as he warmed up. Referee Herb Dean oversaw his fight, in which he represented rapper Lil' Jon's team of fighters against a rep of Jim Jones' Dipset team. "It was like a dogfight or something," Rogers said. "Everyone was standing around the ring. People were sticking their arms in the ring and yelling and screaming. My coach lost his voice, and he was yelling to Little Jon to footsweep him. Lil' Jon's like, 'Footsweep that mother[expletive]!'"

Thiago Santos replaces injured Mike Hayes in tourney semifinals at Bellator 56

In addition to the semifinal round of Bellator's season-five bantamweight tournament, this month's Bellator 55 event also will feature a non-title fight between light-heavyweight champion Christian M'Pumbu (18-3-1 MMA, 3-0 BFC) and veteran Travis Wiuff (65-14 MMA, 0-0 BFC). M'Pumbu won the Bellator title with clean sweep of TKO victories over Chris Davis, Chris Carpenter and Richard Hale in the eight-man season-four tourney. Thiago Santos vs. Josh Burns tourney-reserve fight added to Bellator 53
(mmajunkie.com)
Saturday's Bellator 53 main card has a late addition. With heavyweight-tournament semifinalist Mike Hayes potentially facing a scratch due to a medical suspension, officials have booked a tourney-reserve bout between Thiago Santos (8-1 MMA, 0-0 BFC) and Josh Burns (6-4 MMA, 0-1 BFC). The winner gets the tourney spot if Hayes isn't cleared to continue. Bellator 53 takes place at Buffalo Run Casino in Miami, Okla. The night's main card airs on MTV2 (and in high-definition on EPIX), and the preliminary card streams on Spike.com. To make room on Saturday's main card, a Darryl Cobb (5-3 MMA, 0-0 BFC) vs. Giva Santana (16-1 MMA, 0-0 BFC) middleweight bout has been demoted to the prelims, Bellator officials today confirmed to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). However, the bout gets first dibs on any available TV time if the main-card action ends early.

Bellator 52 Ratings on MTV2 Are Up
(bloodyelbow.com)
Like the UFC this past weekend, Bellator 52 also experienced an upswing in ratings. The card was the quarterfinals of the heavyweight tournament. The ratings for Bellator has appeared to be disappointing since they made the move to MTV2 and in some ways they have been. However, it is all about putting things in perspective. This weekend's show did a combined rating of 465,000 viewers with a .33 market share. The telecast peaked between 9:30 and 9:45 p.m. with 345,000 people tuning in for the fights.

Relaxed Ron Sparks believes Bellator tourney finally his time to shine
(mmajunkie.com)
Bellator heavyweight Ron Sparks (8-0 MMA, 3-0 BFC) felt a strange sensation leading into his fight with Mark Holata (11-3 MMA, 2-1 BFC). His usual pre-fight nerves were replaced by complete calm – almost happiness. "When I walked into that cage, I felt great," the affable heavyweight today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) about his win at Bellator 52, which took place Saturday at L’Auberge du Lac Casino and Resort in Lake Charles, La., and aired on MTV2. Sparks knocked Holata out in 84 seconds. It was his seventh first-round stoppage in an eight-fight pro career. What's his secret? "Man, I keep my chin down and keep my hands moving," Sparks said with a chuckle. But despite his already-impressive ledger, the undefeated fighter said this win was more significant than others. "My biggest thing is believing in myself," Sparks said. "I try not to get into the hype. I know I'm a great fighter, but I know I'm not the best out there. I know that.
