Shlemenko Confirms With 100% Certainty That Fighters Fake Injuries To Avoid Bad Match Ups
(bjpenn.com)
“I can tell you for sure, 100%, I know why there are so many injuries. I personally find UFC fights not as exciting because of all those injuries. There are a lot of background tactics around who’s fighting who; fighters are trying really hard to have a good record in the UFC. If you’ve been offered to fight someone who’s considered a bad match-up, then it’s pretty easy to say ‘hey, I’m injured’. For example, they offered Brian Stann to fight Hector Lombard. He got injured, and then the next thing you know – he’s fighting Michael Bisping. I can see the logic – for Brian Stann it makes more sense to fight Bisping, he’s simply more popular in the UFC than Hector Lombard. That’s why beating Bisping means more than beating Lombard, who’s a risky opponent. You can fake every injury. Just tell [UFC doctors] about the symptoms and that’s it.” In an interview with a ValeTudo.ru, Bellator middleweight stand-out, Alexander Shlemenko tries to blow the whistle on a number of fighters who pull out of scheduled fights due to injury.

Pat Curran forced out of Bellator 73 title fight vs. Patricio Freire with broken orbital bone
(mmajunkie.com)
A sparring injury has forced Pat Curran (17-4 MMA, 7-1 BFC) to withdraw from his first scheduled title defense against Patricio "Pitbull" Freire (17-1 MMA, 5-1 BFC) at Bellator 73. A Bellator official on Tuesday told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that it hasn't been decided whether Freire will remain on the card, and at this time, a search for a replacement is underway. ESPN.com first reported the injury withdrawal. Bellator 73 takes place Aug. 24 at Harrah's Tunica Hotel and Casino in Mississippi. The night's main card airs on MTV2 (and in high-definition on EPIX) following prelims on Spike.com. Curran's cousin and trainer, Jeff Curran, said the Bellator champ was suffering from a knee problem and had decided to focus on boxing rather than muay Thai in the final week of training camp. During a sparring session at his training home near Chicago with a boxer he'd worked with for the past eight weeks, he "ducked into a punch" and suffered a broken orbital. Jeff Curran estimated it would be approximately three months before his cousin is ready to fight. He said the knee problem did not require surgery and was the result of the typical "wear and tear" during a fight camp.

The summer of injuries has now touched Bellator Fighting Championships as well. Bellator featherweight champion Pat Curran has been forced out of his scheduled title fight against Patricio ‘Pitbull’ Freire for next weekend’s Bellator 73 show. According to the report from ESPN, Bellator will now bump up the bantamweight tournament finals between Marcos Galvao and Luis Nogueira to the main event slot.

Travis Wiuff Isn’t with Bellator to Shake Hands and Kiss Babies; He’s Here for a Belt!
(mmaweekly.com)
After mixed results in his initial run at light heavyweight, Travis “Diesel” Wiuff has returned to the weight class and has made real headway by making it to Bellator’s 205-pound tournament semifinals on Friday night. For Wiuff, the move down from heavyweight was more necessity than anything else. “Monte Cox and I were having trouble finding fights,” said Wiuff. “It was just a crazy year where fights were falling through, opponents were falling through and shows were backing out at the last moment. Then last September Monte called me and told me that Bellator was looking for someone to fight their light heavyweight champion (Christian M’Pumbu) in a super fight.

'Bellator: MMA Onslaught' video game available for download today
(mmajunkie.com)
The first video game release from Bellator Fighting Championships is available today. "Bellator: MMA Onslaught," an arcade-style MMA game, was announced earlier this year in association with Viacom Entertainment Group's 345 Games and Spike TV. The game can be downloaded for $15 through the PlayStation Network and XBox Live Arcade. "Bellator has a roster of many of the world's most exciting fighters, and we are thrilled to work with 345 Games to let fans experience our organization in a whole new way," Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney stated earlier this year. "Instead of just watching Michael Chandler's incredible takedowns or Patricky 'Pitbull's' devastating knockout power, fans can now get in the cage with 'Bellator: MMA Onslaught' and either fight with or against Bellator's finest."

Ben Saunders vs. Brian Warren catchweight fight added to Bellator 72
(mmajunkie.com)
Bellator veteran Ben Saunders (13-5-2 MMA, 4-2 BFC) will take a break from tournament competition to fight promotional newcomer Brian Warren (18-15-1 MMA, 0-0 BFC) later this month at Bellator 72. MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) today confirmed the non-tournament bout with sources close to the event. The fight will be contested at a catchweight of 178 pounds. Bellator 72 takes place July 20 at the USF Sun Dome in Tampa, Fla. Main-card fights air on MTV2, and Spike.com streams the prelims. Saunders vs. Warren is likely to be a preliminary-card or swing bout. Saunders returns to the cage following a semifinal-round finish in Bellator's season-six eight-man tournament, which followed a runner-up finish in the season-five tournament. The losses came to notables Bryan Baker and Douglas Lima, respectively. The American Top Team fighter and UFC vet now fights in his current home state of Florida.

No long waits between fights for Bellator champ Pat Curran
(mmajunkie.com)
There were gripes from early Bellator champions that there wasn't enough to do between title defenses – and that what there was to do wasn't particularly attractive. As the promotion's tournament schedule has picked up, however, the days of long waits and dubious non-title fights may be numbered. Bellator featherweight Pat Curran now has two title defenses lined up, which could result in five total fights before year's end.

Bellator 73 Headlined by Curran vs. Pitbull, Features Two Tournament Finals
(mmafrenzy.com)
The third installment of Bellator’s 2012 Summer Series, which will take place August 24 at Harrah’s Tunica Hotel and Casino in Mississippi, looks to be a stacked card as it delivers a Bellator Featherweight Title bout, the Season 6 Bantamweight Tournament Final and the 2012 Summer Series Light Heavyweight Tournament Final. Anchoring Bellator 73 will be Bellator Featherweight Champion Pat Curran taking on Season 4 Tournament Champion Patricio “Pitbull” Freire. Curran, a consensus top featherweight, will be making his first title defense after trouncing Joe Warren in March, a bout that saw the Illinois native take the title with one of the most violent TKO finishes in recent memory. His opponent, “Pitbull” has been sidelined by injury for over year, having not competed since defeating Daniel Straus to become the season 4 Featherweight Tournament Champion.

With 5 Months Left in Current Deal, Bellator Not Sure What Happens with Eddie Alvarez
(mmaweekly.com)
Free agency is a part of every major sport and can make or break a team or promotion depending on how things do or don’t fall in a negotiation. Over the last several years since Bellator Fighting Championships was first conceived, Eddie Alvarez has been the face of the organization and arguably its biggest star. But with his contract coming to an end in just a few months, Bellator may be on the cusp of losing one of its top fighters, but according to CEO Bjorn Rebney it’s all part of the business. Rebney has worked closely with Alvarez ever since he first signed on with the promotion in 2009, but with his deal coming to an end soon, there are no guarantees he will remain under the Bellator banner.

Bellator signs Spanish-language broadcast deal with Telemundo's mun2
(mmajunkie.com)
Bellator Fighting Championships, which has maintained a Spanish-language broadcast team since its 2009 debut, has returned to a familiar broadcast partner. Bellator officials today announced that the promotion has signed a new deal with mun2, which now will serve as the exclusive Spanish-language broadcast partner of the organization in the U.S. The cable network, which aired 22 live events during Bellator's second and third seasons, relaunches its Bellator programming on Friday with a taped airing of Bellator 60. The first live event of the new deal to air on the network will be Bellator 72, which takes place July 20 at USF Sun Dome in Tampa, Fla. "Both Bellator and mun2 have experienced tremendous growth since our earlier alliance, so when the possibility of re-aligning with mun2 for anything/everything Bellator Spanish-language in the U.S., the move was a natural fit," Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney stated. "Since our first event, Bellator has recognized and respected Hispanic consumers as some of the greatest MMA fans in the world, and this partnership ensures that audience will have a new spectacular home where it can watch Bellator live and 'best of' on a weekly basis."

Bellator 71 Recap: Summer Series Kicks off in Devastating Fashion
(cagepotato.com)
If you were at least sort-of interested in last night’s Bellator 71, then you walked away last night satisfied. If you had no interest in the event prior, and just happened to catch the fights that weren’t on FX, you undoubtedly walked away impressed by the action. Not to spoil the recap, but only one fight on the entire card, an undercard bout between Kevin Zalac and Chris Goldbaugh, went the distance. The main card of Bellator 71 more than made up for the anti-climactic finish to Guida vs. Maynard, providing fight fans with quick knockouts and submissions throughout the evening. If you were expecting Travis Wiuff to steamroll Chris Davis on his way to claiming what is rightfully his, you weren’t surprised – but you also weren’t impressed. Wiuff managed to get the first round knockout, yet he didn’t necessarily excite fans with his performance. The fight was a wall-and-stall heavy performance, with Wiuff overpowering Davis, earning a takedown and then punching out Davis with just under one minute left in the round. Wiuff’s bullying style isn’t always the most exciting thing to watch, but it’s hard to question its effectiveness. Add on the size advantage that Wiuff has over most opponents - ”Diesel” has fought at heavyweight for most of his career – and it’s hard not to imagine him earning a rematch with Christian M’Pumbu by the end of the summer. Wiuff is now 67-14 (1 NC) in his career.

Alexander Sarnavskiy signs with Bellator, No. 1 seed for season-seven tourney
(mmajunkie.com)
Russian fighter Alexander Sarnavskiy has signed a multi-fight deal with Bellator, officials today announced. As part of the announcement, officials dubbed him the No. 1 seed for the upcoming season-seven lightweight tournament, which is expected to kick off in September. Sarnavskiy, who trains with some current Bellator fighters at RusFighters Sport Club, enters the organization with a perfect 20-0 record and 17 stoppage wins. If victorious in the season-seven tourney, which will include eight fighters and run 12 weeks, Sarnavskiy would get a guaranteed title shot. "Alexander Shlemenko has put a high standard of Russian dominance in Bellator by winning two middleweight tournaments," Sarnavskiy stated. "Now my teammate Andrey Koreshkov fights for Bellator as well, and he recently won two fights by spectacular KOs. Vitaly Minakov also just signed with Bellator, and I expect him to become Bellator's next heavyweight champion. "I want to follow in the footsteps of those men, and make Bellator proud."

Bellator Inks Former U.S. National Wrestling Champion Shawn Bunch
(sherdog.com)
Another talented wrestling convert has joined the stable of Bellator Fighting Championships, as the promotion Monday announced the signing of former U.S. National and Pan-American champ Shawn Bunch. The news comes just two weeks after 29-year-old Bunch failed to qualify for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team at the national trials in Iowa, though the decision to trade the mat for the cage is nothing new. The onetime Edinboro University standout has long seen MMA in his future, he explained in a statement. “I’ve had my sights set on Bellator for a long time,” said Bunch, who last May told Sherdog.com that a lack of MMA experience kept him from the company’s inaugural bantamweight tournament in 2010. “While I’ve been training in MMA for over four years, I’ve never been able to fully focus on the sport with my wrestling obligations. After watching guys like Ben Askren and ‘King Mo’ [Lawal] -- guys I really look up to in this sport -- have success, I knew the time was right to make the move to Bellator.”

Bellator Signs Four Time World Sambo Champ Vitaly Minakov
(mmanews.com)
The heavyweight additions continue for Bellator Fighting Championships as the promotion has added the undefeated Vitaly Minakov to the heavyweight ranks. Minakov joins Bellator fresh off a vicious knockout of Bellator veteran Eddie Sanchez, and is ready to take his talents stateside and compete with the world’s best fighters. “Becoming a Bellator fighter means that all my hard work in the gym and training has all paid off,” Minakov said. “It means myself and my entire team were working in the right direction, and we did everything right.” Undefeated at 8-0, the four-time World Sambo Champion boasts an outstanding ground game to complement a striking game that has earned the improving Minakov three knockout wins in his last four victories. A member of the RusFighters Sports Club headed by Alexei Zhernakov, Minakov is set to make his Bellator debut shortly and already has his sights set on a future Bellator Heavyweight Tournament.

Bellator Signs Knockout Artist Paul Daley
(mmafighting.com)
Bellator continued its aggressive plunge into the free agent pool, signing UFC and Strikeforce veteran Paul Daley. The promotion confirmed the addition of the British knockout artist to MMA Fighting on Friday. Daley will make his organizational debut at Bellator 72 on July 20. "I’ve been a 'Semtex' fan for years," Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney said in a statement. "He’s an incredibly explosive fighter who is magic to watch inside the cage. So, when the opportunity presented itself to join forces with Paul, it was a simple decision to make. Paul’s one of those fighters I’ve always intentionally stayed home to watch and now I can watch him cageside at Bellator." Just last week, the 29-year-old Daley had asked for and been granted his release from Strikeforce. It didn't take him long to find a new home.

Bellator 71's Brett Rogers says house fire sparked rift with opponent Kevin Asplund
(mmajunkie.com)
Rogers (11-4 MMA, 0-0 BFC) makes his Bellator debut next week at Bellator 71, and the fight comes against a former friend and training partner in Kevin Asplund (15-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC). In fact, Rogers' story about just how the friends became ex-friends would seem to be part of that hell he said he's been through. Rogers believes Asplund's wife, a friend of his own wife, may have been responsible for a fire at his house. And after a series of events and questions and blame-searching, Rogers said that essentially was the end of his friendship with Asplund. And that caused a little ruckus in the pair's inner circle of friends, as well.
