Scott Coker: Early 2016 likely for Bellator champ Liam McGeary vs. Phil Davis
Expect Bellator light-heavyweight champion Liam McGeary to make his next title defense in early 2016. After controlling the action early in the fight, Tito Ortiz (18-12-1 MMA, 2-1 BMMA) ultimately tapped out to an inverted triangle choke from McGeary (11-0 MMA, 8-0 BMMA) in Saturday’s Bellator 142 event. In the co-headliner, Phil Davis (15-3 MMA, 2-0 BMMA) followed up an opening-round submission victory over Emanuel Newton (25-9-1 MMA, 8-3 BMMA) to knock out replacement Francis Carmont (24-11 MMA, 2-1 BMMA), who filled in for injured Muhammed Lawal (16-4 MMA, 8-3 BMMA, to win the single-night tournament and claim his title. Following the MMA-kickboxing “Dynamite” event, which aired on Spike from San Jose’s SAP Center, Bellator President Scott Coker said the two 205-pounders will likely meet in early 2016.

Josh Thomson might be retired right now if not for Scott Coker's Bellator vision
Thomson was only making $5,000 per fight in sponsorship money with the Reebok tiered, tenure structure. He said that three sponsors alone are paying him more than $35,000 for his Bellator debut and there are more to come. Thomson also said he was making up to $90,000 in sponsors per fight during his run as one of the best lightweights in the UFC and Strikeforce. "I had no intentions of testing the waters in the free-market until I heard that we were about to lock down a sponsorship deal," Thomson said. "They took away our sponsors. That was the only deal."

Liam McGeary doesn't blame Tito Ortiz for chasing title shot, but will get 'knocked out'
Liam McGeary understands why Tito Ortiz put so much effort into earning one last title shot. However, he thinks it was a big mistake to do so. Following back-to-back wins to start his Bellator MMA career, Ortiz (18-11-1 MMA, 2-0 BMMA) was offered a matchup against longtime rival Frank Shamrock. He declined and instead insisted Bellator MMA President Scott Coker grant him a light heavyweight championship fight with McGeary (10-0 MMA, 7-0 BMMA) at Bellator 142...

Bellator releases rules for next week's 'Dynamite' light heavyweight tournament
Here are the plans for the tournament: * Two semifinal bouts and one tournament reserve bout will be contested over two five-minute rounds with a one-minute rest period. If any of the bouts are scored a draw, the bout is officially declared a draw, but the judges overseeing the fight will each cast a ballot on who they think should advance to the finals “by merit of his performance.” * A minimum of 30 minutes will separate the end of the semis and the beginning of the finals * The tournament final will be contested the same as a non-title fight, with three five-minute rounds and two one-minute rest periods. A draw will trigger the same process as the semifinals, only the fighter who gets the most votes will be declared the tournament’s winner. * If a semifinal winner cannot advance due to injury, a “survivor” rule will put his opponent into the finals. If that opponent can’t advance, however, the winner of the tournament reserve bout will advance. To advance, all tournament participants need medical clearance. * Fouls that end bouts will be addressed depending on whether the infraction was intentional or accidental. If an accidental foul renders the semifinal winner unable to continue, the uninjured fighter will advance, and the tournament reserve winner will remain on standby. * If an intentional foul ends a semifinal bout, the fouling fighter will be disqualified and the fouled fighter will be “medically eliminated.” Then the tournament reserve winner will advance. * If an accidental foul ends the finals before two rounds have been completed, the tournament is over without a winner. After two rounds, the bout gets judged on the completed rounds. * Any additional circumstances not addressed by the rules will resolved by “the senior (CSAC) representative in conjunction with the Bellator regulatory affairs director.”

Melvin Guillard suffers 'shattered' hand in Bellator 141 loss, expected to undergo surgery
Melvin Guillard’s Bellator debut did not go according to plan. The former UFC lightweight contender dropped a split decision to handpicked opponent Brandon Girtz in the main event of Bellator 141 on Friday. Girtz’s (13-4 MMA, 5-3 BMMA) combination of punching power and explosive takedowns gave Guillard (34-14-2 MMA, 0-1 BMMA) fits for the majority of the contest. “The Young Assassin” nearly scored a finish in the final minutes of the 155-pound contest, but throughout most of the fight his strike count was below the norm. A “shattered” right hand was likely a contributing factor.

Justin Wren has returned from the Congo, but his fight for the Pygmies has just begun
Justin Wren stroked his prodigious beard, scratched the dry, red skin on his arm and squinted. "It's kind of crazy we're here," he said. "All that green." The ivy-covered coffee shop patio about two miles from the campus of UCLA brought Wren back to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. And, more specifically, the vision he had that led him to the African nation in the first place. Four years ago, Wren was an MMA fighter struggling with addiction and depression, looking for something else of value in his life. During a spiritual retreat, he found it even if he didn't know where it was.
