Medical Beat: Update on Horodecki's injury and a look at bulging disks
Chris Horodecki, the now 21-year-old "Polish Hammer" who enjoyed a meteoric rise during the IFL's brief history, ran into trouble during his medical evaluation for Saturday's "Affliction: Day of Reckoning" event, which MMAjunkie.com reported late Wednesday. He was unable to gain a license for competition in California, scrubbing him from his pay-per-view bout with Dan Lauzon.
Jay Hieron vs. Jason High expected to be promoted to Affliction’s “Day of Reckoning” PPV telecast
With a planned lightweight attraction between Chris Horodecki and Dan Lauzon scrapped for Affliction and M-1’s “Day of Reckoning” event this coming Saturday, FiveOuncesOfPain.com has learned that officials with the promotion are planning on promoting a welterweight bout between Jay Hieron vs. Jason High to the five-bout pay-per-view telecast. The bout had originally been scheduled to air during HDNet’s telecast of the undercard.
Fedor Emelianenko Makes The New York Times
This is a big deal. The NYT is considered the paper of record by almost every journalist in the country. Here's the lede from the article:
Freddie Roach Is Going To "Eat Crow" For Fedor Remarks
Josh Barnett certainly thinks so. Barnett says Roach is quite wrong about comments he made about Fedor being, among other things, "flat footed" with "no technique".
GILBERT YVEL APOLOGIZES FOR MISDEEDS, EYES BELT
He arrived in Las Vegas to kick off the New Year, and was blown away by its training atmosphere. “I’ve never trained this hard in my life,” he says. “We train in Holland maybe one, two hours in the morning, maybe two hours in the evening. Training over here, wow. I’m training with the best, so I’ll be with the best.” When MMAWeekly catches up to him, he’s giving Stephan Bonnar fits inside the caged sparring area of Xtreme Couture. After the session, Bonnar walks over and taps his glove. “Thanks for the ass kicking,” the UFC light heavyweight says.
Sokoudjou Kicks Off New Year At Afflcition
Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou has too much time on his hands. He’s just finished a training session with mentor Dan Henderson and the others at Team Quest South, and says he has a stack of 10 DVD’s waiting for him at home.
Gilbert Yvel Cleared To Fight At Affliction II On Saturday
Controversial Dutch heavyweight Gilbert Yvel has been officially cleared to face Josh Barnett at Affliction's "Day of Reckoning" on Saturday in Anaheim, Calif. Bill Douglas, Assistant Executive Officer of the California State Athletic Commission, informed MMAWeekly.com that Yvel had submitted his final paperwork a little after 5 p.m. today and was subsequently issued a license to compete.
Breaking: Horodecki Off Affliction 2
Although few details are known at this time beyond it perhaps being neurologically-related, word just broke that Chris Horodecki will not be medically cleared by the CSAC to fight Saturday and thus is off Affliction: Day Of Reckoning. Affliction is trying to find a replacement for his original opponent, Dan Lauzon.
Matyushenko Ready For Lil Nog
Sometimes a fight goes under the radar during the hyping period that often precursors large MMA events. For this Saturday’s Affliction show, "Day of Reckoning," that fight could very well be the light-heavyweight mach-up between Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Vladimir “The Janitor” Matyushenko. While both fighters are widely regarded as Top 10 talent, the unassuming nature of each man makes for a fight that could easily exceed expectations.
Fedor Rings the NASDAQ Opening Bell
Tito Ortiz & Oscar De La Hoya Talk Fedor
After several months out of the spotlight, former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz resurfaced not as a fighter, but as a part of the Affliction commentating team for Saturday's "Day of Reckoning" event in Anaheim, Calif. At a Tuesday press conference in New York, Ortiz, along with famed boxer Oscar De La Hoya weighed in on the heavyweight main event of Fedor Emelianenko vs. Andrei Arlovski. De La Hoya represents Golden Boy Promotions, Affliction's promotional partner.
Fedor Emelianenko's Road To Reckoning Vlog: Episode 1
NO MATTER WHAT VITOR SHOWS, LINDLAND IS READY
“No matter what Vitor shows up, he’s a dangerous man,” says 38 year-old Matt Lindland. “He’s the same guy he’s always been. What could be new about him? The only thing is he’s gotten a little older and a little slower. But he’s still dangerous. I still think he’s gotta be one of the quickest guys at 185. I would put him and Chael Sonnen as two of the quickest guys I know, at any weight class.”
Arlovski hopes to cash in against Fedor
Andrei Arlovski finds himself in a unique position on Saturday night when he faces Fedor Emelianenko, generally considered the sport’s best heavyweight, in a five-round match for the World Alliance of Mixed Martial Arts title. The former UFC heavyweight champion left the organization last year to take one of the most lucrative MMA contracts in history from upstart Affliction.

Fedor on his physique and fighting ‘the best fighters in the world to date’
“All of my training is the same. Every fighter has a different physique and different baggage they bring to the ring. I don’t rely on weight training. I haven’t for several years. It’s really more focusing on the opponent and working on sparring, wrestling and certain activities I do. It’s all about the training camp. All the hard work and all the results that show up in the ring is a result of what’s done before…. Vadim [Finkelstein] is my friend, he’s my partner and he’s very well qualified and he’s proven himself as a good manager. He’s got a track record of building my career and collaborating with major organizations, which has afforded me the opportunity to fight the best fighters in the world to date. Everyone has their duties in this business. My role is to fight. Vadim’s role is to deal with people like Dana White.”
5 Questions for Affliction ‘Day of Reckoning’
The apparel company’s second semi-charitable show is low on tomato-can stock, and like the best events, it promises to pose questions about records, careers and legacies. 1. Is the “old” Vitor Belfort hiding at 185 pounds? 2. Does Freddie Roach matter in MMA? 3. Can Gilbert Yvel behave himself? 4. Can Affliction thrive? 5. Will announcer Tito Ortiz use the term “For Sure” more or less than 24 times?
