Affliction VP Tom Atencio: Third MMA show ‘being put together right now’
The third Affliction show is being put together right now, so I will give everybody what they want. It’s just one of those things that takes time. I always say this over and over and over again: This is only our third event. It’s not like we’ve done small events prior to our first one. It takes time to re-structure and figure everything out. Yeah, I understand the fans and people want us to continue, but when you’re new to it, you take your time because you want to get it right. You don’t want to make the same mistakes that I’ve made on the last two shows.
Affliction's Tom Atencio: Emelianenko vs. Barnett is "the fight I want"
Affliction Vice President Tom Atencio is still tight-lipped about details of the organization's upcoming third show.
But when it comes to the night's main event, he definitely has his heart set on one particular matchup: Fedor Emelianenko vs. Josh Barnett.
"It hasn't been finalized," Atencio said on today's edition of MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio). "It's the fight fight I want, though. We're working on it.
"But it's not done."
MMA Quick Quote: Tom Atencio walks the walk, Dana White talks the talk
“I want to thank Prize Fight as well as Fight Force for putting on this card. I’ve been seen in front of the cameras before as far as the business side, but it’s time to fight. I’m doing something Dana White won’t do and that’s fight. He talks like a fighter, so why doesn’t he fight? I’m stepping up to the plate and win, lose or draw I attempted it. I don’t ever think he would fight.”
– Affliction Vice President Tom Atencio takes a rare stab at his UFC counterpart, Dana White, during the press conference to promote his upcoming welterweight fight against Randy Hedderick at “Ultimate Chaos,” which is scheduled for the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Miss., on June 27. This will not be the first time that the 42-year-old steps into the ring — Atencio made his mixed martial arts debut back in 2005 and has competed sporadically ever since. He currently runs Affliction MMA, staging two major pay-per-view (PPV) events within the last year. During that time White — who was at one time an aspiring boxer — has been vocal about the “t-shirt” guys wasting gobs of money and running a poor operation. Atencio, for the most part, has bit his lip … until now.
Fedor vs. Barnett Possible For August
According to a Russian MMA news site, the long-rumored matchup of WAMMA Heavyweight Champion Fedor Emelianenko vs. Josh Barnett for the title may finally happen (again) in August. A loose translation suggests it will be at the 3rd M-1 Global/Affliction event planned for early August.
Lil’ Nog: Stop lying! Affliction is here to stay…
“A promotion that has Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya as an associate, and that might be making ties with HBO television, it is far from collapsing. Affliction has one of the richest men in the world and with a super cable network like HBO, it won’t finish. That’s a lie. The event will still last a long time.”
AFFLICTION 3 ON JULY 11, FEDOR LIKELY
July 11 is shaping up to be a busy night for mixed martial arts enthusiasts.
Affliction will counter-program UFC 100 on the summer date with its third event at a location yet to be determined, according to sources close to the situation.
The card is just under a week from the first anniversary of “Banned,” the clothing company’s initial foray into MMA promotion.
Affliction looking into going head-to-head with UFC 100
Several fighters and managers have contacted FiveOuncesOfPain.com in recent days informing the site that they have been approached by Affliction officials about the possibility of accepting restructured contracts in order to compete on the show.
According to the sources, Affliction wants to reduce it overhead for a potential third event so that it could host it on a network or basic cable television platform, as it would be next to impossible to convince PPV distributors to promote an event that would be in direct competition with the UFC.
Tom Atencio: ‘I’m kind of between a rock and a hard place’ with third Affliction event
” … I’m just trying to figure out what we’re doing, that’s all. I’m kind of between a rock and a hard place. The fans and the media treat me like I’m on my tenth show. I’m on my third show, and I’m just trying to make sure I don’t make the same mistakes that I made in the other events. If there’s things I’ve made mistakes on I try to fix them. I’m trying to be methodical about everything. I’m just trying to make sure that whatever we do, we’re doing it right.
Atencio: ''Affliction Will Be Back In 3-4 Months''
Affliction is still committed to mixed martial arts and will stage its next live event in around three or four months, says company vice-president Tom Atencio.
Speaking exclusively to Fighters Only this week, he said that rumours of Affliction’s demise are greatly exaggerated and the company’s desire to stage fight shows is undiminished.
“Whats happening right now is I’m sitting down with my partners and we’re going to work out [our next show],” he said. “We’re looking at three or four months, but right now we don’t have a date set.”
Werdum Wants Fedor
Fabricio Werdum says his dream schedule for the near future would be a rematch with Andrei Arlovski followed by a fight with Fedor Emelianenko.
The Brazilian heavyweight made his UFC debut against Arlovski at UFC 70 in Manchester, England, but the fight was considered below par by fans and its participants alike.
Lindland: ''Only Thing Hurt Was My Pride''
Matt Lindland says the only injury he suffered was hurt pride after being stopped in 37 seconds by Vitor Belfort at Affliction 2.
Lindland was caught with an overhand left that dropped him unconscious immediately, yet Belfort was still able to land three or four punches to his prone opponent before the referee stepped in.
The result was a frighteningly drawn-out period of unconsciousness on Lindland’s part, but he says subsequent tests have revealed no lasting damage.
Rumor: Affliction is DONE...
Affliction MMA is Done.
Tom Atencio will be making an announcement soon.
A third show will probably happen to fulfill Affliction Entertainments larger contract obligations unless a deal with Zuffa can be arranged to offset some of the costs while Affliction pays off their contract obligations via "sponsorships"...
Arlovski and where he goes next
Arlovski held a video chat tonight for his fans. Some interesting stuff. Check it out. Talked about his fight with Fedor, his next fight, his boxing career, his "glass jaw", a possible return to the UFC, among other things.
