Affliction Entertainment today officially announced a previously rumored bout between Vitor Belfort (18-8) and Jorge Santiago (21-7) that completes the pay-per-view main card for "Affliction: Trilogy."
The event takes place Aug. 1 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.
The show features a five-round main event between WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko and Josh Barnett, which headlines the pay-per-view main card. The night's preliminary card airs on HDNet.
Fedor: Barnett is "Dangerous"
Even under his restrained façade, Fedor Emelianenko can’t hide the acknowledgment that one of his biggest career challenges lies directly ahead.
Emelianenko finally meets Josh Barnett in the main event at Affliction “Trilogy” on Aug. 1 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.
Tim Sylvia Off 'Affliction: Trilogy'
Tim Sylvia's shocking 10-second knockout loss to Ray Mercer on Saturday has proven to be more costly than originally thought. Affliction Entertainment vice president, Tom Atencio, informed FanHouse on Monday that Sylvia has now been taken off the upcoming "Affliction: Trilogy" card. "It's his second knockout in a row, and I don't want to take a chance on anything," Atencio said. "The fight is less than 60 days away."
Atencio added that no one from the California State Athletic Commission contacted him about taking Sylvia off the card, but he felt it was in Sylvia's best interest to take some time off to heal.
Heavyweights Jessie Gibbs vs. Rob Broughton added to "Affliction: Trilogy" preliminary card
A heavyweight bout between M-1 fighters Jessie Gibbs (7-2) and Rob Broughton (10-4-1) has been added to the "Affliction: Trilogy" preliminary card.
M-1 Global officials today announced the bout.
"Affliction: Trilogy" takes place Aug. 1 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. The main card, featuring a headliner of Fedor Emelianenko vs. Josh Barnett, airs on pay-per-view, and the night's preliminary card airs on HDNet.
Gibbs, a member of Team Benelux in M-1 Challenge, is 5-2 in M-1 events. He enters the Affliction show with six wins (five via stoppage) in his past seven fights. Gibbs most recently competed in May when he defeated MMA newcomer Nikola Dipchkov with a 97-second submission due to strikes. Gibbs' only two career losses have come to notables Aleksander Emelianenko and Alexey Oleinik.
Paul Buentello on Tim Sylvia Loss: 'I Wish He Never Took the Fight'
Lost in the aftermath of Tim Sylvia's shocking 10-second knockout loss to Ray Mercer on Saturday night is how it may drastically affected Paul Buentello's summer plans. "The Headhunter" was scheduled to face Sylvia at "Affliction: Trilogy" on August, but is now unsure as to whether or not that fight will happen.
FanHouse spoke to Buentello on Sunday about his thoughts on Sylvia's loss and why he may now have to wait a little longer to face the former UFC heavyweight champion.
GOMI VS. BRETT COOPER IN WORKS FOR AFFLICTION 3
Japanese star Takanori Gomi is in advanced negotiations to face Brett Cooper at Affliction "Trilogy" on Aug. 1, MMAWeekly.com has learned from sources close to the fight.
Both parties have agreed to the match-up, though financial considerations are still being ironed out. The fight is being considered at a 165-pound weight limit.
Fedor says No training Issues, Ready For Work
Not an hour after Emelianenko plucked the former UFC heavyweight champ out of the sky at January’s “Day of Reckoning,” Voronov was breathing a sigh of relief backstage.
“(Fedor) won with his old baggage, with his old tricks,” he said. “We did everything we can to get him ready for this fight. But for these title fights, for these dangerous fights, we can’t train the way we trained for this fight.”
Emelianenko wrapped an action movie alongside Rutger Hauer and Michael Madsen last November and canceled an American press tour citing a need to prepare for the January fight. In November, he suffered his first loss in Sambo in eight years.
Ben Rothwell vs Chase Gormley Set for Affliction: Trilogy
Former IFL heavyweight champion Ben Rothwell is set to square off with undefeated up-and-comer Chase Gormley at Affliction: Trilogy on August 1 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.
MMA Fanhouse confirmed the matchup at Wednesday's Affliction: Trilogy press conference with Affliction Vice President Tom Atencio.
Tim Sylvia vs. Paul Buentello fight confirmed for Affliction 3 on Aug. 1
Former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia (24-5) is indeed booked to return to action against Paul Buentello (27-10) at Affliction 3: “Trilogy” at the Honda Center in Los Angeles, Calif., on Aug. 1, 2009.
The long-rumored bout was recently confirmed by MMAFanhouse.com with promotion officials.
Sylvia has been on the shelf since getting steamrolled by Fedor Emelianenko at Affliction “Banned” in July 2008. That’s more than a year of inactivity, which could be a factor when “The Maine-iac” finally steps back into the ring on fight night.
He will, however, have a little tune up before his meeting with Buentello … if that’s what you want to call it.
Affliction planning fourth event for the East Coast
“Trilogy just means that this is the third. This is the third of the series … What it should indicate to people is that this is just the third event that Affliction will be promoting, and I can assure you that there will be a fourth; a fifth; and a sixth. The fourth one will most probably be on the East Coast.”
Affliction COO Michael Cohen explains to MMA Fanhouse that despite the haters, Affliction will continue to move forward with its mixed martial arts promotion, including three more shows and a stop on the East Coast that is “most probable” for 2009.
Fedor Emelianenko vs Josh Barnett can be one of the most anticipated fights in MMA history
“I consider Josh as one of the truly best in MMA, I think he is really in his prime right now. Just like when I fought Cro Cop, he was in his prime as well. At that time it was one of the most anticipated fights in MMA history (and) my fight with Josh can be that as well…. Every opponent is a danger for me and Barnett has a great ground game. He is capable of adjusting his gameplan any minute in the fight.”
The last man to hold the Pride FC heavyweight title and current WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko (29-1) hypes his long-awaited fight against “The Babyface Assassin” at Affliction’s third venture, which is set to go down from the Honda Center in Los Angeles, Calif., on Aug. 1, 2009. There has been a lot of talk over the years that both Emelianenko and Barnett were avoiding meeting in the center of the ring because of the friendship they forged during their years under the Pride FC banner. It appears, however, that the showdown was inevitable — they are the last two men standing under the Affliction banner atop their respective division.

While official details have not been released, the organization's third show is expected to be held on Aug. 1 at Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.
