Five Fighters Who Had Career Changing Wins at ONE FC: 'Pride of a Nation'
(mmamania.com)
Phil Baroni. The New York Badass put his money where his mouth is by blowing away Rodrigo Ribeiro in less than a minute and then celebrating in style (see above!) The win improves his overall record to 15-15 and he is 1-1 for ONE FC, 2-2 since getting cut from the UFC and 5-5 in his last 10 fights, which adds a certain sense of symmetry. Ribeiro was 9-8 going into the fight and is a third degree BJJ black belt and a veteran of the Brazilian scene. He is no pushover and went the full three rounds with Rustam Khabilov (who just signed with the UFC) in his last fight but Baroni blew him away in a first round frenzy. This was one of the most impressive performances of Baroni's career and was reminiscent of his famous UFC win over Dave Menne. He is back in the mix in the ONE FC welterweight division and next time he fights it is likely to be on the main card with Fabricio Monteiro and Gregor Gracie two potential opponents.

The Agony of the Injury: UFC's 2012 Badly Slowed by Health Woes
(mmafighting.com)
It doesn't take a statistical analysis to innately understand that injury woes have ravaged the UFC schedule in 2012. Still, with two-thirds of the year completed, a look at the numbers makes it clear exactly just how bad it has been. So far this year, the UFC has had no fewer than 78 fights canceled due to injury, an MMA Fighting examination of records shows. To put that into perspective, that number of injuries is just two less than the total number of fights produced by the UFC in all of 2005...

ONE FC eliminates 'open-attack' rule, adopts full PRIDE rules for soccer kicks
(mmajunkie.com)
ONE Fighting Championship has eliminated its "open-attack" rule for soccer kicks, officials today announced. The decision came a few days after the often-confusing rule resulted in an Andrei Arlovski vs. Tim Sylvia heavyweight contest being declared a no-contest this past weekend at ONE FC 5. Instead, soccer kicks are now legal at all times, and the referee no longer has to distinguish when they're an option. "Effective immediately, ONE FC has adopted full PRIDE rules for soccer kicks," the organization announced via Twitter. The organization's next event, "ONE FC 6: Rise of the Kings," will be the first to feature the rules change. The event takes place Oct. 6 at Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore, and it's again expected to be available as an online pay-per-view.

The Ultimate Fighter Season 16 Premiers on Sept. 14 with a New Approach
(mmaweekly.com)
The UFC and Fox broke the ice of their reality TV efforts with The Ultimate Fighter Live, but the live twist to the series is one and done. Season 16 is currently in production and set to premiere on Sept. 14 on FX, minus the live fights of season 15. The logistics of editing a week of recorded footage in with the live fights didn’t garner larger ratings on FX than the series had drawn in the past on Spike TV, and it left little time to develop the story lines that typically draw viewers deeper into a reality series. TUF Live averaged slightly more than 1 million viewers per episode, which is below what the series had done in the past. That left a sour taste in UFC president Dana White’s mouth, as he is constantly looking for growth. But considering the Friday night time slot, which was new to the series, it was to be expected...

Officials announced the signing via Twitter following an initial report from MMAFighting.com. Torres will debut at the organization's Nov. 3 event, which takes place at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. An opponent hasn't been determined. Crunching Numbers: How Fairly Are Fight Bonuses Awarded?
(mmafighting.com)
The UFC's stated fight bonus system is a noteworthy form of incentivization. For extraordinary performance, UFC fighters are able to considerably augment their pay with a Submission of the Night (SOTN), Knockout of the Night (KOTN) or Fight of the Night (FOTN) bonus. Sometimes the same fighter can win two of those bonuses on the same night. Best of all, any fighter on the card can win any of the awards. You don't have to be a world champion at the top of the card to take home extra cash on a UFC fight night. Or do you? After going over the data, it appears you do. Or, at least, it helps quite a bit. The truth of the UFC's stated fight bonus system is that while everyone at every level can and has won, the most dramatic impact on your likelihood of earning bonus money has little to do with performance. Before we get into which factor is the biggest determinant in being awarded bonuses, let's take a look at the kind of fighter who wins UFC fight bonuses. The numbers below are some of the statistics based on the top 20 bonus earners in UFC history:

Invicta FC President Shannon Knapp taking road less traveled to build women's MMA
(mmajunkie.com)
In Shannon Knapp's estimation, women's MMA isn't quite as bad off as some critics would lead us to believe. And she's going to go about doing what she can to push the women's side of the game forward, developing fighters and changing attitudes until people can only vaguely remember a time when depth was an issue. Knapp, the president of Invicta Fighting Championship, differs slightly from UFC President Dana White, who long has maintained there isn't enough depth in women's MMA. "Depth, by definition, is there," Knapp recently told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). "There are tons of girls out there that want to fight. But the truth of the matter is, when you get into that upper echelon, to that top tier, it's pretty thin." And that may fall in line a little more with what White has been outspoken about – that it's hard to imagine, in the current landscape, women's MMA in the UFC because the weight classes aren't stacked enough to make for regular UFC-quality fights...

A Look Back at Some of the Greatest Villains
(mmafighting.com)
After the publicity surrounding the cancellation of UFC 151 - which will forever go down in history as the phantom card that never took place - Jon Jones, who has taken a share of the blame, is now likely to find himself, at least temporarily, as a member of a select group. You can use the term villain, bad guy, or heel, but it's the big star who goes to the cage with thousands booing their lungs out, hoping to vicariously live through their opponent in seeing them beaten. When one of the fighters is truly hated by the crowd, it can increase ticket sales and it creates a great atmosphere surrounding fights. But heels in mixed martial arts are very different from those in the movies or in pro wrestling. In the movies, the bad guy is scripted ahead of time and everyone knows the role they have to play. In pro wrestling, the same is true, although it's not as cut and dried, because the live audience sometimes has a mind of its own. Sometimes they like people they are supposed to hate...

Jon Jones was going to pay UFC 151 fighters salaries but chose not to after Twitter trash talk
(mmamania.com)
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) was all set to blow the roof off the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, tonight (Sat., Sept. 1, 2012) with its UFC 151: "Jones vs. Henderson" event headlined by Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones defending his title against Dan Henderson. That was until about nine days ago when word trickled out that "Hendo" injured his knee and would be pulling out of the fight. This triggered a chain of events that have changed the way mixed martial arts (MMA) fans feel about the biggest fight promotion in the world. Jones, already a polarizing figure, turned down a short notice replacement bout against Chael Sonnen, presumably after being told by an angry UFC President Dana White that if he did so, the entire event would be cancelled just over one week before it was scheduled to occur. Still, Jones said no and MMA fans had their Labor Day weekend freed up from any major show. The fallout has been nasty. White and the UFC embarked on what was, essentially, a smear campaign, burying "Bones" at every turn. They issued press releases with quotes like, "UFC 151 will always be the event remembered as the one Jon Jones and Greg Jackson MURDERED."

Bellator Champ Michael Chandler Moves Camp from Xtreme Couture to Alliance MMA
(mmafighting.com)
It's been a rapid ascent to the top for Michael Chandler, who had barely been training in mixed martial arts for two years when he defeated Eddie Alvarez to capture the Bellator lightweight championship. It was a rise he credits mostly to his time at Xtreme Couture, the Las Vegas-based camp that has spawned many stars. But after nearly three years spent in the gambling capital of the world, Chandler has taken a risk of his own. It's rare for a champion to leave a camp; it's rarer still for someone unbeaten to move on, but it's a change he's decided to make. Chandler has recently taken his perfect record to San Diego, where he has begun training with Alliance MMA, the home of UFC bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz, as well as notables including Phil Davis, Alexander Gustafsson and Brandon Vera. The move came about two months ago, and while Chandler told MMA Fighting that it was a difficult decision to make, it's so far proven to be the right one.

Rashad Evans Targeting December Return in UFC Light Heavyweight Division
(mmaweekly.com)
Former UFC light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans hopes to fight again before the end of the year, and unless something miraculous happens, it will be at 205 pounds. Evans has commented recently that he would love a challenge like facing UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, which prompted everyone to assume that the former Ultimate Fighter winner might be contemplating a move down to 185 pounds. Well, according to Evans’ manager, Glenn Robinson of Authentic Sports Management, he’s definitely interested in middleweight, but only for one fight.

Cowboy Cerrone Made it Personal with Anthony Pettis, Now He Gets to Answer For It
(mmaweekly.com)
Anthony Pettis is anxious to get back in the cage and settle a newfound rivalry with fellow former WEC fighter Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone. The two fighters are on a collision course for a bout later this year, so it’s no longer a matter of if, it’s only a matter of when. “That is the fight that’s going to happen. We’re currently working, trying to put together the avenue for which they’re going to fight. I would look for an announcement sooner rather than later for when that fight’s going to be,” Pettis’ manager, Mike Roberts of MMA Inc., told MMAWeekly Radio earlier this week. “Hopefully it’s the sooner the better because Anthony can’t wait to get his hands on him.”

Mark Munoz Open to Any UFC Fight, but No Mention of Hector Lombard Yet
(mmaweekly.com)
Mark Munoz is currently nursing some injuries before he can schedule his next fight in the UFC. This according to Munoz’s manager Mike Roberts of MMA Inc., who says that the former NCAA champion needed some time to heal after his loss to Chris Weidman at UFC on Fuel 4 earlier this summer. “Mark’s nursing through some injuries right now. He obviously had the cut on his forehead and we later found out that he had a small fracture in his foot, and he’s still having some elbow problems from the surgery,” Roberts revealed when speaking to MMAWeekly Radio. “So he’s rehabbing, taking some time to heal his body, and I think you’ll see him at some point by the end of the year.”
