Shine Fights Announces Pairings for Friday's Lightweight Tournament
It's been an interesting – and mostly rough – road leading to Shine Fights' lightweight tournament. But two days before the event, the promotion made official its grand prix pairings. As Shine Fights COO Jason Chambers announced on Twitter in the days leading up to the tournament, first-round tournament matches between Drew Fickett and Charles "Krazy Horse" Bennett, Rich Crunkilton and Carlo Prater and James Warfield and Kyle Baker were confirmed by the promotion Wednesday night. Also made official was the fourth bout, Shannon Gugerty vs. Dennis Bermudez.
Darren Elkins vs. newcomer Edson Barboza planned for UFC 123 event
Undefeated Brazilian lightweight Edson Barboza (6-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) likely will serve the first obligation of a multi-fight deal with the UFC when he meets Darren Elkins (11-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) at UFC 123. Sources close to the event informed MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) of the matchup Wednesday evening and said at least one of the fighters has already agreed to the proposed contest, though bout agreements have yet to be distributed.
Thiago Silva "Anxious" To Stand And "Bang" With Brandon Vera
But first, as he tells the TATAME, he's gotta get that bad back of his fixed. "Everything depends on the athlete. To get there really hungry for the win sometimes is not a good thing, but everyone is different. I’ll be ready, for sure, and let’s see what happens. I think it’s a good fight, the two of us like to bang and it seems it’ll be a great fight. I’m anxious for this fight, our games match. He won’t be like trying to grab me all the time, we’ll trade a lot of punches. There’s plenty time and I still have to fix my spine. I’m doing treatment for it. It’ll take a month so I can go back to the trainings, but now I just have to wait for me to fight again."
Siver vs. Winner Planned for UFC 122 in Germany
A lightweight bout between Dennis Siver and Andre Winner is planned for UFC 122 in Germany, sources told MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani on Thursday. The event will be the UFC's second in Germany and will be a homecoming for Siver. He also fought on the promotion's debut in that country, UFC 99 in June 2009, submitting Dale Hartt with a first-round rear naked choke. Siver (16-7, 5-4 UFC) is of German and Russian descent and began his MMA career in Germany. Siver last fought at the Season 11 finale of "The Ultimate Fighter," beating Spencer Fisher by unanimous decision. Three of his last five fights have netted him post-fight bonus awards – two Knockout of the Night wins (Nate Mohr at UFC 93, Paul Kelly at UFC 105) and a Fight of the Night against Ross Pearson at UFC Fight Night 21, though he lost a decision.
David Heath Filing Lawsuit Against Shine Fights
Another day, another potential major issue for Shine Fights. One of the fighters scheduled for the last-minute-scratch 5/15 event, David "Not Gangrel" Heath, says he will sue the promotion next week because he claims he has not been paid his contracted participation in the event. He was scheduled to face Murilo Rua. When asked if he had received payment from Shine Fights, Heath answered by text message saying, "Nope. Gonna file a small claims suit when I get back from MFC this weekend." Heath is currently in Canada for the Maximum Fighting Championship show taking place this Friday, and will return home to Oklahoma next week where he plans to file the suit.
Sean Sherk: Evan Dunham Won't Do Anything That I Haven't Seen Or Had Done To Me Before
And he thinks it's just another step in the road back to the UFC Lightweight Championship, and apparently Sherk isn't afraid to be a little cocky ahead of UFC 119. "What I do works and I'm not going to change it now. I don't think (Evan Dunham) is going to do anything in the cage that I haven't seen or had done to me before. I've literally fought the best of the best in this industry for a very long time. I've fought for world titles in two different weight classes. I don't see him beating me at any aspect of the game. My striking is faster, it's crisper. My wrestling is better, my jiu-jitsu is better. There’s a lot of hungry kids out there, I’m hungry too. I want it. I've been there already. I’ve' had that belt. I loved it. I loved being world champion. I want that again."
DirecTV Won't Offer Shine Fights
"We pulled it off the schedule given the possibility that the event may be canceled based on the last-minute venue change and we do not want to put our customers in the position having to get refunds," DirecTV said in a statement to MMAFighting.com.

Thomson vs JZ set for Strikeforce Oct 9
Fighting in enemy territory is nothing new for Gesias "JZ" Cavalcante after years of fighting in Japan, but now the American Top Team fighter will step into a similar situation as he faces Josh Thomson in his hometown of San Jose on Oct 9 as the two lightweights are set to square off in Strikeforce. The bout was confirmed to MMAWeekly.com on Wednesday by Cavalcante's manager, Alex Davis, who spoke with MMAWeekly Radio about the match-up.

Florian Hires Wrestling Coach, Back in 5 Months
"I'm more motivated than ever. I'm pissed, to be honest. I want to crush my training. That's what I'm focused on right now. I just hired the assistant wrestling coach at Boston University (Sean Gray) to be my wrestling coach here in Boston and I have other plans for a lot of other things as far as training goes."
Aurelio Out Of Shine Fights Tournament, Questionable For DREAM
PRIDE and UFC veteran Marcus Aurelio today said that an elbow injury he sustained two weeks ago will keep him from fighting in Shine Fights' single-night eight-man tournament on Friday in Newkirk, Okla. And while he's keeping his fingers crossed that he'll be able to meet an obligation to fight Shinya Aoki at DREAM.16 on Sept. 25, it all depends on whether his injury subsides enough to fight. Many observers have questioned the timing of Aurelio's withdrawal, which came 24 hours after Shine Fights COO Jason Chambers told MMAWeekly.com that the Brazilian did not have permission to fight Aoki in DREAM and wasn't likely to get the green light unless he fought in Friday's event. As for Friday, Shannon Gugerty is the replacement.
KJ Noons Willing To Stand & Trade With Manny Pacquiao In MMA Fight
And in boxing for good measure. And he's up for Floyd Mayweather in boxing too. "I would love to welcome Pacquiao into MMA. It would be an ideal situation for him because I don't take guys down to the ground, and after that's all said and done in the cage, I would be willing to step inside of the ring with him too, something we all knew Randy Couture wouldn't do with James Toney. I know Floyd (Mayweather) isn't looking to do MMA, but I would still be willing to fight Mayweather and Pacquiao in a boxing match and both camps have been reached, so we will see what happens. I will put it this way, both camps have been reached and both camps were very interested."
Rousimar Palhares Doesn't Want To Hurt Opponents, He Wants To Finish Them Quickly
And he makes that clear in response to criticism he's faced since his win over Tomasz Drwal at UFC 111. “Murilo always told me to wait until the referee stops the fight. He had problems with [fake taps] in the past and Anderson almost had the same problem in his last fight. Its not that I want to hurt anyone but I am trying to be fast with my submissions so the referee needs to be fast as well, to stop the fight. My opinion is that the referee in my last fight was too far away and took too long to stop the fight. If he had been closer then he could have stopped it right away and then we would not even be having this conversation at all!”
Jim Miller Would Fight Teammate Frankie Edgar
The subject of teammate vs. teammate, or training partners fighting in MMA has become one of the hottest topics of the day. With more and more fighters flocking to major camps all over the world, there are bound to be numerous situations where friends and teammates are forced to answer the question if they would fight each other. The battle lines have been drawn with several fighters stating they would never, ever fight a teammate, while others have put it off until they are forced to answer the question when a fight is offered. One person who has an interesting perspective on the subject is UFC lightweight Jim Miller, who fights Gleison Tibau at UFC Fight Night 22 on Sept. 15, and could be drawing closer and closer to a title shot with a win. Right now, if Miller were to get a title shot he would face off against friend and training partner Frankie Edgar, who currently holds the UFC lightweight title.
George Sotiropoulos vs. Joe Lauzon in the Works for UFC 123
There's a fantastic lightweight match-up brewing between up-and-coming division prospects Joe Lauzon and George Sotiropoulos, as the Ultimate Fighter (TUF) veterans are currently in talks to throw down at the upcoming UFC 123 pay-per-view on Nov. 20 in Auburn Hills, MI. MMAmania.com confirmed the pending match-up earlier today.
