Local entrepreneurs Are Cashing In On The Ultimate Fighting Phenomenon.
The first thing you hear is the sound of human flesh being squarely punched and kicked, like thick slabs of raw steak hitting wet concrete. The room smells of sweat and is humming with activity. Grunting and heavy breathing come from fighters of different ages who are training in a variety of styles.
Mainstream MMA Media Is Disappointing
This may be a small rant, but it will definitely include some fact checking on my part. Recently, the mainstream media outlets have begun to sink their teeth into the sport of MMA
Matt Hamill: UFC 75 Judges Need to “Re-evaluate” Scoring Criteria

Mailbag: Bisping-Hamill Debate Continues
Nothing sends the keyboard warriors into action more than a questionable fight decision. The call in the Michael Bisping-Matt Hamill fight at UFC 75 on Saturday set off a deluge of response.
UFC News & Notes: Comments from Bisping, Hamill, and Ratner; and more!
The post-UFC 75 fallout continues with a lot of fighters and UFC reps going on the record. There are also some other interesting stories out there right now pertaining to upcoming UFC events.
Is there really a judging credibility issue with the UFC or is the media overplaying it’s hand on what was simply a tight fight?
Michael Bisping's Father Attacked In The 02 Arena Car Park
"Nobody knows what happend before the press conference" he told us, "Just before I walked in, I got a phone call saying that my dad had been attacked in the car park by several people." Bisping tried to come to his father's aid, but was unable to find him.
Ultimate Fighting Could Come To Illinois
The state will soon begin regulating mixed martial arts, a move that means Ultimate Fighting Championship bouts could be held in Illinois.
Blowback at Sports Illustrated.
So in suggesting in my last column that Pride had been overrated compared to UFC, I learned an important lesson: some SI.com readers swear more than Dana White. Even one of my friends piled it on. But really, it was great to have the debate explode in my inbox. Some of the letter writers made excellent points, like this one:
Mark Cuban Sees Bright Future For MMA
Mark Cuban, owner of the NBA's Dallas Mavericks, is prepared to throw his hat into the MMA ring. Along with business partner Guy Mezger, he's hoping to pool several regional MMA organizations together and have them promote shows that can air on the HDNet Friday Night Fights series. Cuban made big waves last week when he joined in the pursuit of free agent Heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko. Obviously if he's able to get Fedor, and it's possible with the fortune he's amassed, it not only would give his plans instant credibility but could quickly establish him as a legitimate competitor to UFC and IFL. Not to mention a Cuban-Dana White war of words would be very entertaining given Cuban's less-than-cordial relationship with NBA Commissioner David Stern.
Marcus Davis & Houston Alexander Earn Win Bonuses At UFC 75
Marcus Davis has earned $80,000 in win bonuses for his fight at UFC 75, having been given awards for "Fight Of The Night" and "Submission Of The Night", both worth $40,000. Davis defeated Paul Taylor by submission (armbar). The award for "Knockout Of The Night", also worth $40K, went to Houston Alexander for his KO win over Alessio Sakara in 61 seconds. Nice little bonus for the fighters considering their pay for the fight probably won't be that high. These awards UFC gives out are nice incentives for the fighters to go out and put on the best performance they can.
MMAWeekly World Rankings Updated
The latest MMAWeekly World MMA Rankings were released on Wednesday, September 12. This system ranks the top ten MMA fighters from all across the world in each of the six largest weight classes, as voted on by MMAWeekly. We take into consideration a fighter's performance in addition to his win-loss record, head-to-head and common opponents, difficulty of opponents, and numerous other factors in what is the most comprehensive rankings system in the sport. As always, fighters who are currently serving drug-related suspensions are not eligible for top ten consideration. Obviously I'm a little surprised that Mirko is still ranked in the top 10 for Heavyweights, and that Cheick Kongo didn't break into the rankings much like Gonzaga did after his win over Mirko.
Gilbert Melendez announces opponent for Strikeforce card
“Gorgeous” George Garcia of TAGG Radio has confirmed to Five Ounces of Pain that former Pride lightweight Gilbert Melendez revealed on the show that he’ll be fighting Tetsuji Kato from Shooto on Strikeforce’s next show scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 29 at the Playboy Mansion.
Joe Riggs Leaves WEC For Strikeforce
The Fight Network is reporting, Joe “Diesel” Riggs has asked WEC promoters to release him from the remainder of his contract, so he can pursue a better contract with Strikeforce. Apparently Riggs has signed a contract with Strikeforce to fight on the September 29, Playboy Manson Card. He will likely be fighting for the Strikeforce welterweight title against 41 year old Eugene Jackson.

Karl Gotch: Hooker ... Outsider
On July 28, 2007, one of the greatest hookers ever to don a pair of tights passed away. But don’t look for any mention in the media, for Karl Gotch died of natural causes and didn’t take anyone with him.
Ed Fishman Still Making Moves In MMA
Despite a stint as the president of Pride’s U.S. operations as the promotion dove into oblivion, casino and entertainment mogul Ed Fishman is still as motivated as ever to make a run at mixed martial arts promotion
Why Won’t Anyone Hold Judges Accountable?
Well, it’s officially “Michael Bipsing / Matt Hamill” day, where all we’re gonna talk about is Michael Bisping, Matt Hamill, bad judging, and other related chicanery. Okay not really, but it certainly feels like it lately. Up first is Dana White’s reaction to the whole situation:
Bisping Booed After Hamill Win
MICHAEL BISPING won his grudge match against Matt Hamill with a highly controversial split decision in London on Saturday night. The Brit fighter had the bulk of the audience at the O2 Arena on his side but was largely outfought and outfoxed by Ohio's Hamill throughout their three-round contest.
