Big Name Backs Local Gym
Pete Becker wasn't hoping for much. Maybe just an appearance by his old friend Randy Couture to sign autographs at a new mixed-martial-arts gym Becker and his friend Eric Wetzel were building in Lombard.
Tito Ortiz Thinking In the Long-term
He’s known for agitating t-shirts such as ‘Guy Metzger Is My Bitch’ which set off the three-fight war between him and Ken Shamrock. Tito Ortiz is not just a celebrity athlete; he is a mixed martial arts icon and, frankly, a UFC moneymaker.
Shaw Speaks at Cage Rage 23 Weigh-In
In a promising sign for the blossoming relationship between Cage Rage and EliteXC, boxing-turned-MMA promoter Gary Shaw attended the Cage Rage 23 weigh-ins.
Ultimate fighter Kendall Grove earned the nickname “Da Spyder,” mainly because of his long, lanky 6-foot-6-inch frame and his nimbleness in the ring. But the 24-year-old Maui native’s nickname could have just as easily been derived from his rough-and-tumble career, which, until recently, resembled a tangled web of frustration and disappointment.
Keith Jardine not Upset by Lack of Respect
ANAHEIM, Calif. – The UFC 76 news conference was well under way on Thursday. UFC president Dana White took center stage and engaged the media in his trademark back-and-forth banter.
UFC 76 Storylines
Have you had your fill of the Ultimate Fighting Championship yet? Well, the company isn’t about to let their fans take a break. The UFC presents their fourth card in the past four weeks with UFC 76: Knockout, live from the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. This show looks to be one of those sleeper shows, where you look at the card and aren’t impressed at first glance, but then look deeper and see the potential for an intriguing show.
Angle eager to make move to MMA
The International Fight League is negotiating to sign what would be its biggest talent addition to date in Kurt Angle, the 1996 Olympic gold medal wrestler who later became a successful pro grappler. "God willing, the IFL and myself can make a deal," Angle told FOXSports.com while attending the promotion's team championship finale Thursday night at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. "The best fit for me right now as a pro wrestler who [works] about 120 times a year is the IFL."
EliteXC's Potential Matchups
With the recent success of the EliteXC: Uprising event and the high-valued acquisitions of fighters such as Murilo Rua, Robbie Lawler, and Nick Diaz, the potential for EliteXC to bring some major competition to the U.S. MMA market has certainly heated up.
Ocean City Maryland To Host Martial Arts Event
On the one hand, martial arts classes teach children and adults discipline, self-esteem and respect of all living things. Think of Mr. Miyagi in the "Karate Kid," telling a confused Daniel that he teaches him karate in the hopes he will never have to use it
Rua Set To Rock UFC's World
To the average person Mauricio "Shogun" Rua is not the second coming of Michael Jordan, he is not worthy of being welcomed by paparazzi at the airport like David Beckham, nor is he the icon that fellow Brazilian Pele is to soccer, but to hardcore mixed martial arts fans, Rua is all those celebrities combined and more
Two Guys On the Rebound
Dogged by questions about the effects of his age, physical fitness and tendency to go night-clubbing as fight night has neared, Chuck Liddell says his Saturday night Ultimate Fighting Championship bout with Keith Jardine will dismiss the doubters
Vanessa Porto: "It Is Time To Put Gina In Against A Real Challenge
FightHype.com recently spoke to female mixed martial artists Vanessa "Hurricane" Porto who was eager to let Gina Carano know that she wasn't impressed with her victory over Tonya Evinger this past weekend.
Liddell And His Women
Thank God for Chuck Liddell. Today has been a completely boring day as far as MMA news goes. When the top story is that there’ll be weigh-ins tomorrow and a replay of EliteXC on Saturday, you know shit is slow.
Bleeding Into the Mainstream
Last December at Ultimate Fighting Championship 66, in the first round of a many-holds-barred, mixed martial arts grudge match between the evenly weighted gladiators Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz, the former floored the latter with a gloved right hook that had been fully sanctioned by the Nevada Athletic Commission.
UFC may come to Montreal in January
''I am pretty confident we can get something done up there in January,'' UFC president Dana White said Thursday ahead of UFC 76. ''It's not a set date. We are leaning toward Montreal, but it's not for sure yet.''
Sanchez a Hungry Lion again
The first loss. It’s a traumatic event for most fighters, who in response will try to do anything in their power to erase the memory of that defeat as soon as it happens. For some, that means getting back into the gym within days. For others, the easiest way to deal with a setback is to demand another fight immediately to get a quick win and move on.
Liddell should answer all questions on Saturday night
Chuck Liddell is undoubtedly the most popular mixed martial artist in the UFC. And only a short time ago, he was viewed by many as the most dominant 205-lb champion in UFC history.
Kurt Angle: "God Willing, IFL & Myself Can Make A Deal"
Former WWE & Current TNA Wrestling Champion Kurt Angle was in attendance at last night's IFL Finals and claimed to be talking to the promotion about joining. Angle has been wanting to get into MMA for some time now, with most rumors suggesting he wants to fight fellow wrestling standout Brock Lesnar. It's getting pretty hard to take him seriously on these now. His claims of needing a year to prepare make him a bad short-term investment, plus he's getting up there in age and already has serious injury risks lingering from his wrestling years. He could also be posturing here, using IFL as a bargaining chip to try and get a better offer from UFC or other rival suitors. I could see him helping IFL but at this point in time they shouldn't take this risk.
UFN 11 Medical Suspensions Announced
The NSAC has posted the official UFN 11 results online, which includes the medical suspensions for the participants as well. Interesting that at least one fighter from all but one fight was suspended. Sometimes these reveal more about potential injuries suffered than we see or read about, that seemed to be the case again last night.
City Of Vancouver Bans MMA
MMA fans in Vancouver, BC, Canada will now have to go elsewhere to get their MMA fix. MMA won't be sanctioned in the city anymore, effective today. This probably will affect the smaller promotions the most, although I can see it as a small setback to UFC's plans to expand up north even though right now their primary commitment seems to be to Montreal.
