No Surgery Required, Jon Jones Injury Should be Fully Healed by Chael Sonnen Fight
( mmaweekly.com) It’s obvious with the announcement that UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones will coach opposite Chael Sonnen on the seventeenth season of The Ultimate Fighter and then fight afterwards that Jones’ arm injury from his last fight wasn’t as severe as many feared.
Jones’ arm was injured when it was caught and locked out in an armbar by Vitor Belfort at UFC 152 in September.
Tuesday’s announcement about the coaching positions and subsequent bout, however, overshadowed Jones’ elbow.
Bellator 77's Rich Clementi: I've made a career out of beating undefeated fighters
( mmajunkie.com) Longtime MMA fighter Rich Clementi has been in this position before.
During his 13 years and 66 professional fights in the MMA world, he's faced countless opponents who were dubbed the next big thing, much like undefeated Alexander Sarnavskiy, whom he faces at Friday's Bellator 77 event.
"This isn't going to be the first time I've dethroned an undefeated fighter with a lot of hype around him," Clementi told MMAjunkie.com.
MFC's Mark Pavelich says he couldn't promote women's MMA
( mmajunkie.com) Canada's Maximum Fighting Championship has been in operation for 13 years, which is a great source of pride for promoter Mark Pavelich.
Part of that staying power, he said, is rooted in putting out a consistent product. In a time when the sport's biggest promotion is flirting with women's MMA and headliners of questionable importance, Pavelich said he's sticking to what he knows.
When it comes to women's MMA, that means staying out of the game.
UFC reality series 'The Ultimate Fighter' moving off Friday nights for Season 17 on FX
( mmajunkie.com) "The Ultimate Fighter," the UFC's long-running reality competition, will move out of its current Friday night time slot on FX to a different day of the week starting with Season 17.
FX executive Chuck Saftler on Wednesday confirmed the change during a media conference call promoting the season, which will begin taping later this month and will air starting in January on the cable network.
The UFC and FX announced Season 17 earlier this week with coaches Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen
UFC champ Jon Jones opens as -600 favorite over Chael Sonnen
( mmajunkie.com) UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones has opened as a -600, or 6-to-1, favorite over upcoming opponent Chael Sonnen, who's a +400 underdog.
Veteran oddsmakers Joey Oddessa today confirmed the opening line with MMAjunkie.com.
As reported earlier today, Jones and Sonnen have been tapped as coaches for "The Ultimate Fighter 17," which debuts in January on FX. They'll then headlined an as-yet-unannounced pay-per-view event on April 27.
Anthony Pettis' injury rehab continues, but targeting January UFC return vs. Cerrone
( mmajunkie.com) Anthony Pettis' injury rehab continues, and it apparently continues to frustrate, as well.
The UFC lightweight has been sidelined since a February win over Joe Lauzon at UFC 144, but scheduled surgery following that bout. The presumed next fight for "Showtime" will come against Donald Cerrone.
But on Tuesday, Pettis may have triggered a few panic buttons when he tweeted his aggravation with the rehab process
Dan Henderson addresses Chael Sonnen's 'TUF 17' assignment, title fight
( mmajunkie.com) Just two short months ago, Dan Henderson was on deck for a well-deserved title shot against UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones.
But following a knee injury that forced him out of a title fight at September's subsequently canceled UFC 151 event, the division has moved on without him.
For example, with his promised title shot now a distant memory, Henderson is forced to watch Chael Sonnen cut to the front of the line.
Evans OK with Jones-Sonnen fight, but admits 'it's not the same for everybody
( mmajunkie.com) Chael Sonnen will fight Jon Jones for the UFC light heavyweight title next April.
The booking was announced on Tuesday. And, of course, piling on began from the multitudes upset that Sonnen hasn't had a fight at 205 in what will be seven and a half years when he meets Jones. And he's coming off a loss.
But Rashad Evans, a former challenger of Jones, has no real issue with the fight. He just wishes it worked the same for everyone
Chael Sonnen says Jon Jones should have moved to heavyweight, but it's too late
( mmajunkie.com) The Jon Jones vs. Chael Sonnen light heavyweight title fight for next spring had been public for all of a few hours when Sonnen, arguably the most legendary talker in UFC history, went to work.
Sonnen on Tuesday night told FUEL TV's "UFC Tonight" that his fight with Jones came about in quite a simple manner.
WEC vet plans two-on-two MMA fights for upcoming Desert Rage event
(mmajunkie.com) Chance Farrar grew up with a bunch of brothers and thinks he's found a way to make MMA more exciting: add more bodies.
The WEC vet and promoter of Desert Rage Full Contact Fighting is holding an event that features two-on-two MMA fights.
"We started trying it in the gym, and it's been successful," he told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). "It's nothing short of controlled chaos, but exciting. You can't predict what's going to happen."
The event, "Desert Rage 11: Revenge at Paradise," takes place Oct. 20 at Paradise Casino in Yuma, Ariz.
Farrar, who is semiretired, said the fights will be contested under the Unified Rules of MMA with the exception of no elbows and knees allowed. There will be no rounds and no time limits, he said, as trial runs indicated they weren't needed. Two referees will corral a foursome in a 30-foot cage.
Things get even more interesting when a combatant is stopped by strikes, submission, or referee stoppage. Farrar said a one-minute rest is called to give officials time to remove the eliminated fighter, and the round then resumes.
The fight ends, obviously, when one sides loses both fighters. If an eliminated fighter is unable to leave the cage within the one-minute period, the other side wins by forfeit. Rounds will be five minutes each with a one-minute rest period between each round, as with standard pro MMA bouts. But Farrar said there will be no limit to how many rounds a fight can go.
As far as weight classes, a team's collective bulk is added together to classify their division. The lightweight class is 350 pounds and under; middleweight is 425 pounds and under; and heavyweights tip the scales at 500 pounds and under.
BREAKING: Chael Sonnen and Jon Jones named coaches for TUF 17.
(mmajunkie.com) UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones and former middleweight title challenger Chael Sonnen (28-12-1 MMA, 6-5 UFC) will serve as coaches on "The Ultimate Fighter 17" on FX.
The coaching assignments, as well as an April 27 fight date, today were confirmed by the Los Angeles Times.
Due to his coaching duties, Sonnen no longer will fight Forrest Griffin (19-7 MMA, 10-5 UFC) at UFC 155 in December.
"TUF 17" filming begins Oct. 29, and the show then debuts on FX in January. The 17th edition of the UFC's long-running reality series is expected to feature middleweight and light-heavyweight fighters. Open tryouts for the tournament-based competition and show recently drew more than 120 UFC hopefuls.
'The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil 2' tryouts attract more than 300 UFC hopefuls
(mmajunkie.com) Sunday's festivities included a number of both internationally and domestically recognized notables, including Daniel Acacio, Flavio Alvaro, Roberto "Corvo" Amorim, Yan Cabral, Bruno Carvalho, Rafael Dias, Gilberto Galvao, Paulo "Bananada" Goncalves, Andrews Nakahara, Jonatas Novaes, Wendell "War Machine" Oliveira and Leonardo Santos, among many others, including several renowned jiu-jitsu players. Additionally, Gilberto Durinho, who was a coach for Team Belfort in the first season of "TUF: Brazil," tried out for the show, as did a tired pair of UFC 153 cornermen: Bruno Azevedo, who supported Rony Jason on Saturday night, and Thiago "Jambo" Goncalves, who was in Fabio Maldonado's corner.
There are some good fighters in that list

Despite UFC 153 loss, Jon Fitch and Dana White impressed with Erick Silva
( mmajunkie.com) Saturday's UFC 153 card in Rio de Janeiro was billed as being about Anderson, but Erick was the Silva on plenty of minds heading into the card.
Erick Silva had torn through all three of his UFC opponents before his meeting with Jon Fitch, and only a controversial disqualification against Carlo Prater in January stood between him and a 3-0 UFC record.
But Fitch stood right in front of the Silva hype train, and if he didn't send it off the track, he at least slowed it down
Anderson Silva: "I Prefer Him [GSP] Over Jon Jones, He's Smaller, I'll Be Hit Less"
(espn.co.uk) Anderson Silva says he prefers a fight against Georges St-Pierre over a showdown with Jon Jones, insisting the Canadian would be an easier challenge. Silva disposed of Stephan Bonnar in simple fashion at UFC 153 on Saturday, and talk instantly turned to who he would face next. Welterweight king St-Pierre is the mooted opponent, although Jones also enters the super-fight reckoning.
UFC president Dana White guaranteed he will make the Silva v Jones bout, but the Brazilian wagged his finger in disagreement.
"I'm old, guys," Silva said. "I'm getting old. I'm retired. I'm nearly there. I've only got another five years.
"I think [GSP] would be a great challenge for me. I prefer him over Jon Jones. He's smaller. It'll be a little bit easier. I'll be hit less."
Daniel Cormier hopes Frank Mir fight is rescheduled for January Strikeforce show
(mmajunkie.com) As it stands now, heavyweight grand prix winner Daniel Cormier isn't a lock for Strikeforce's January card.
Cormier (10-0 MMA, 7-0 SF) was scheduled to headline a since-canceled Nov. 3 Strikeforce event against UFC import Frank Mir (16-6 MMA, 14-6 UFC), and officials said the next event now is slated for January.
Cormier hopes the Mir bout, which will be his final one in Strikeforce before an anticipated move to the UFC, still happens, though.
Mir, of course, was forced off the card due to an injury, according to the organization. Following the subsequent loss of co-headliner and middleweight champion Luke Rockhold, Strikeforce and broadcast partner Showtime canceled the show this past week and instead put the focus on the as-yet-unannounced January card.
"I don't have an opponent," Cormier told AXS TV's "Inside MMA" on Monday. "But with the two-month delay, hopefully Frank Mir is healed up and ready to go. I haven't been told I'm fighting for sure, but if they're promising a stacked card, I'm hoping I'm one of the guys they look at and you put [me] on the card and it becomes a little bit better."
Jeff Monson signs with ROAD FC
(fightsportasia.com) Road FC have been signing international fighters at rapid pace in the past few months… and we can expect more!
The latest signing is the submission Monster himself, Jeff “The Snowman” Monson.
Matt Hughes: “It Looks Like I’m Fully Retired”
( mmaweekly.com) Former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes hasn’t competed for more than a year, and it appears that will be the last time he steps foot in the Octagon.
Already a UFC Hall of Fame inductee, Hughes has been out of action since dropping back-to-back bouts to B.J. Penn and Josh Koscheck between 2010 and 2011, but now he seems ready to move on with life after fighting.
In a recent interview with the Iowa Daily Gate, Hughes said that while he’s never officially announced his retirement from MMA, for all intents and purposes he’s already hung up the gloves.
Kennedy anticipates January fight, possible compensation for canceled Strikeforce event
( mmajunkie.com) Tim Kennedy admittedly was angry when suspicions that the Nov. 3 card he was scheduled for were confirmed online – before he knew it.
But after a receiving a phone call from a Strikeforce executive, the middleweight feels confident the promotion will take care of him and other displaced fighters.
"It seems like Zuffa is doing right by us, so I'm grateful for the way they handled it once they had no other choice," Kennedy told MMAjunkie.com.
