B.J. Penn says Sean Sherk's UFC belt no better than Marion Jones' medals
B.J. Penn has his eye on Sean Sherk's UFC lightweight title, so he may not be the most neutral observer when it comes to Sherk's positive drug test at UFC 73. But the Hawaii mixed martial arts fighter known as The Prodigy doesn't mince words when it comes to Sherk. The UFC has matched Penn against Joe Stevenson in January at UFC 80 in Newcastle, England, for the interim 155-pound championship, while Sherk appeals his test for steroids. "Sean Sherk can say it's a fake interim title, but his belt is no more real that Marion Jones' gold medals," Penn told a gathering of the UFC Fight Club before Friday's weigh-in for UFC 78 at the Prudential Center.

New Jersey's Boxing Commissioner Fired On Eve Of UFC 78
Larry Hazzard, commissioner of the New Jersey Athletic Control Board, which oversees boxing and MMA in the state, was fired Wednesday. What's puzzling about this is Hazzard's apparently good reputation on the job and the timing-just a couple days before UFC 78 in Newark, among other unspoken factors.

New Bas Rutten inverview
He's a legend in the sport of MMA as one of the greatest fighters in the history of the sport. Now he stands as a color commentator for the IFL and a coach to younger fighters, such as new MMA fighter Kimbo Slice. In this first of a two part exclusive interview with HACNews, Bas talks about everything from the IFL changes and fighter problems to Kimbo's first official MMA fight and the "fixed" controversy surrounding it. Bas also talks about who he'd like Kimbo to fight next and who he would have liked to fight if he continued on in his own career. A great interview with one of the most fan friendly guys around and MMA legend.

Strikeforce Tourney: Sasaki Out, Salmon Likely In
Yuki Sasaki has been ruled out of tonight's Strikeforce middleweight tournament. The Japanese veteran of over 30 fights was denied a license Friday, California State Athletic Commission executive officer Armando confirmed to Sherdog.com, after MRI and MRA exams raised concerns over the Sasaki's health. This is getting a tad ridicolous

Update on MMA in Ontario
I got this email from the Ontario Mixed Martial Arts Association today: MMA took a very important step forward today as the Ontario Mixed Martial Arts Association (OMMAA) has submitted their application to become the sanctioning body for Amateur MMA in Ontario. The Ministry of Health Promotions (responsible for overseeing amateur sport) has promised a quick turnaround with initial feedback and/or concerns about our proposal. There are no guarantees in this process and ultimately the government may simply decide to say no to MMA, but OMMAA Board Members are optimistic. In a letter received on May 3, 2006 from the Ministry of Government Services (responsible for overseeing professional sport) stated the following: “You may wish to contact the Ministry of Health Promotions so that you can explore having MMA recognized and sanctioned through the amateur sporting process. Steps in this direction may enable you to establish a safety record in Ontario…” On November 7, 2007, Ontario ’s Athletic Commissioner, Ken Hayashi, stated the following in a phone conversation with OMMAA: “You guys are doing the right thing going the amateur route just like Muay Thai and KickBoxing had to do. The province will not consider sanctioning professional MMA without having an Amateur safety record first….” The government has held firm on their position of requiring Amateur before Professional. They have consistently and repeatedly communicated this to everyone who has inquired about MMA in Ontario , including the media and even the UFC themselves. OMMAA is the only organization actually taking steps to do what the government has asked. We very much appreciate your continued support! Sincerely, Board Members of OMMAA www.ommaa.com

Sammy Vasquez Fighting For His Life
Sammy Vasquez has been fighting for his life in Saint Joseph Medical Center’s Critical Care Unit since the night of his Oct. 20 Renegades Extreme Fighting bout at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. Revolution Dojo’s Vasquez (1-2) suffered a third-round KO loss to Vince Libardi (4-3) before being taken to the hospital by local medical technicians seated cageside. Vasquez’s 26 days in critical condition have resulted in multiple blood clots, fluid on his brain, brain swelling and, most recently, a massive stroke he suffered last Friday, according to messages left on the TXMMA.com forum by Vasquez’s wife, Sandra. In the latest posting, dated Nov. 12, the family asked not to be contacted and simply requested prayers. Vasquez’s mother spoke with The Fight Network on Tuesday but would only confirm her son is 35 years old and the father of a 7-year-old.

Parisyan not giving up on His Title Dream
Karo Parisyan doesn’t get stumped by too many questions. But when you ask the welterweight contender what keeps him motivated after all the ups and downs he has experienced in an amazing 11-year journey through mixed martial arts, he falls silent. “I don’t know,” he chuckles. “I always find an answer for something.” Born in Yerevan, Parisyan and his family moved to California when he was a child, and by the age of eight he was training in judo with the legendary Gene LeBell, by 14, he had discovered mixed martial arts, and at 16, he was fighting grown men for money. But while Parisyan bounced around the MMA circuit over the next few years, it wasn’t until 2003 and a spectacular submission win over Dave Strasser at UFC 44 that he truly arrived as a fighter to watch

Tamdan McCrory – “The Barn Cat” Cometh
Want a little perspective on the experience gap between welterweights Tamdan McCrory and Akihiro Gono, who will meet at Newark’s Prudential Center on Saturday’s UFC 78 card? When Japan’s Gono made his mixed martial arts debut in April of 1994, McCrory was just eight years old. But “The Barn Cat” laughs off such a trivial tidbit. “I’ve been fighting a lot of guys that are his age and older, so I guess I’m starting to get used to it,” said McCrory, who just turned 21 on November 5th. “And as far as experience level and how many fights he’s had, he’s definitely the most experienced out of all the fighters I faced, but I look at it as another way to make my stock rise.

Fisher Ready For Wherever The Fight Goes
Spencer Fisher has a 20-3 record compared to Frankie Edgar's undefeated 7-0 mixed martial arts resume. He believes his experience will be a factor in their Ultimate Fighting Championship 78 lightweight bout on Saturday night in Newark, N.J. Asked about the experience factor and if it will come into play, Fisher replied, "Absolutely, because I've been in every position. I've been on my back. I've been pinned against the cage. I mean, I've been in every bad position possible having this many fights, and I think come Nov. 17, we're going to find out how much experience plays into this fight."
