Roger Gracie Officially Drops To Middleweight, Joins Black House
(bloodyelbow.com)
In an interview with MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani, Ed Soares has confirmed that Roger Gracie is signing with Black House management and more importantly, he is dropping to the 185 pound Middleweight Division. This is not the most shocking news as it has been rumored Gracie had been mulling a weight drop for some time and he has reportedly being working members of Black House, including UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva on Tatame.com a few months ago. Roger's run at Light Heavyweight sparked some hope for the resurgence of the Gracie family legend, but his biggest wins were over an aged Kevin Randleman and Trevor Prangley. In his most recent fight with Muhammed Lawal, Gracie was knocked out within the first round. For Gracie, this move makes a great deal of sense, for while he is long and tall, he lacks the heft and mass that the majority of elite Light Heavyweights enjoy. It is likely in any major fight Gracie entered at 205 lbs he would have been at a serious strength and size disadvantage. Furthermore, the top of the Strikeforce Light Heavyweight division is populated by strong wrestlers, who would likely be able to stop the Brazilian's attempts to take him down and win the striking battle decisively, as Lawal did. At Middleweight, Gracie will be on the tallest fighters in the division at 6'4" and be on more equal footing in terms of physical strength. Throw in that the talent pool is a bit shallower at Middleweight and Gracie's grappling abilities could make him a real contender at that weight.

Positive Signs Point to UFC Events in Italy, Spain and France in Near Future
(mmafighting.com)
Mar 15, 2012 - The UFC will continue its European expansion next month when the promotion makes its debut in Stockholm, Sweden for UFC on FUEL TV 2. And according to UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta, the organization hopes to debut in a few more European countries by the end of next year. "I think Italy will be next," Fertitta said. "Me and Lawrence [Epstein, the UFC's general counsel] went out to Italy and met with the owners. There's really only one venue in Italy that makes sense for us. There's an arena right outside of Milan, it's owned by a family, and once again, they had these misconceptions about what this was. 'Oh my gosh, you're going to have these guys get in there and fight in a cage,' and all this other stuff. But we went out there, sat down with them, explained who we were, what our background was, safety, regulation, all those things. [We] invited them to the fight in Birmingham [for UFC 138], and they were blown away. They said, 'You guys are welcome any time you want.'

Jorge Masvidal on Gilbert Melendez rematch: 'I been robbed more than your local 7-11'
(mmamania.com)
Jorge Masvidal is coming off a loss to Gilbert Melendez in a fight where the scorecards did not tell the entire story. The Cuban-American did plenty of damage to the reigning Strikeforce Lightweight Champion and the fight was competitive for all five rounds. but he couldn't quite do enough to win more than one of them. The outcome could have been different had Masvidal not fought with a broken hand, an injury he exacerbated in the opening round, forcing him to stick to a jab-dependent offense for much of the remainder of the fight. There is no shame in losing to a top five lightweight like Melendez and the fact that Masvidal was even headlining a Strikeforce card shows how far his career has come. He started out a long way from arenas complete with television crews and large crowds. His first taste of fighting was in backyards in Miami where famously he took on one of Kimbo Slice's protegees in a video which is still available on YouTube. Masvidal says he much prefers fighting on sanctioned shows and is not sure how much his street fighting experience has helped him as a fighter. 'I don't know if it helped develop me as a fighter but it definitely makes you wanna win. It's nice to fight people your own weight and get paid good though. You mighta seen my street fights on youtube, it just went from there. I just like to fight, if i can get paid for it and make a living then that's good."

Dan Hardy Talks UFC 146, Proving He Belongs And Training With Lorenzo Fertitta At 'Secret Gym'
(bloodyelbow.com)
There comes a time in every fighter's life when they need to question their motivation for their chosen career path. For Dan Hardy, it wasn't quite as clear as he wanted it to be over the last 2 years. With 4 tough losses, camp changes, and management shake-ups, the drive and desire to compete was still missing a vital element, anger. Dan has stated in recent interviews that he's regained that element, and is reacquainting himself with that spark growing in him, as the clocks and calendars edge closer to his UFC 146 bout with Duane Ludwig. I recently spoke with Dan about the changes he's put in place to get his name back in the win column.

Jake Ellenberger Wants Condit But Open to Fight with Martin Kampmann
(mmaweekly.com)
If Carlos Condit’s ultimate decision is to sit and wait for the return of UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre later this year, then that leaves a couple of top contenders awaiting match-ups of their own. At the top of that list sits Jake Ellenberger, who is currently riding a six fight win streak, most recently defeating Diego Sanchez at UFC on Fuel TV 1 in February. Ellenberger’s wish list starts with a rematch against Condit, who defeated him in his UFC debut, when he stepped in on a month’s notice to face the former WEC champion. Speaking to Fuel TV’s UFC Tonight, Ellenberger thinks now is the best time for him to face Condit, and he believes he’s earned it.

Lorenzo Fertitta: 'Let Joe Silva and Sean Shelby develop a women's league, I guarantee you they can do it'
(mmamania.com)
Is someone pulling rank? Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta, who was both "captivated" and "blown away" by the headlining fight of Ronda Rousey vs. Miesha Tate back on March 3 under the Strikeforce banner, is a staunch supporter of women's mixed martial arts (MMA). UFC President Dana White? Not so much. Women's MMA, while prevalent overseas in Japan and Australia, is limited to mostly regional promotions in the United States, with the occasional superfight televised under the Strikeforce banner when one or more of its top stars are available. But will we ever see women inside the Octagon? Fertitta believes the perceived lack of depth in the existing talent pool is not only starting to change, but could be compensated by the matchmaking skills of Joe Silva and Sean Shelby.

Mike Brown vs. Daniel Pineda added to May's UFC 146 event
(mmajunkie.com)
A featherweight matchup between Mike Brown (25-8 MMA, 1-3 UFC) and Daniel Pineda (17-7 MMA, 2-0 UFC) has been added to May's UFC 146 event. UFC officials announced the matchup earlier today. Featuring a heavyweight title fight between current champion Junior Dos Santos and former Strikeforce title holder Alistair Overeem, "UFC 146: Dos Santos vs. Overeem" takes place May 26 at Las Vegas' MGM Grand Garden Arena. Brown vs. Pineda takes place on the preliminary card. "Pineda is developing as a serious contender as he will be looking for his third stoppage in the octagon in only 5 months and riding an almost-two-year unbeaten streak," UFC president Dana White stated. "This will be the toughest test of his career, dealing with Brown's experience, power and submission prowess." Brown looks to build on the strength of his first-ever UFC win, a UFC 133 victory over Nam Phan. The much-needed result snapped a two-fight losing streak for the former WEC featherweight champion, who had suffered back-to-back losses to Rani Yahya and Diego Nunes following the UFC's absorption of the WEC's roster. Brown also lost a lightweight bout at UFC 47 in April 2004.

Anderson Silva bashes Chael Sonnen, says he doesn't deserve 2nd title shot
(mixedmartialarts.com)
"(What does Chael Sonnen represent for my career?) Nothing! He’s possessed by a demon. That’s the truth. He’s an athlete that failed the drug test, I fought him while injured, and he had problems with the American Justice system. He respects nothing and he didn’t respect our country. What does he represent? Nothing. "I respect the opinions and the positions of the promoters of the fight and the owners of the event, but in my opinion he shouldn’t get the chance to fight me again. But that’s not something that I can decide. I will get ready for the fight just as I would with any other." "He disrespected our idols that made history in the world of sports, such as Lance Armstrong. This guy is complicated, he’s got personal issues. The attention that the Brazilian media gives him, the attention that Palmeiras gave him, it’s very bad. If any Brazilian would be in the position that he finds himself in, if they would talk about the US and he does about Brazil, and the American idols, we wouldn’t even have the same opportunities of going in their country or talking to the American media. I think that Brazilians should be more patriotic, like the Americans.

The Best Fighter Outside the UFC: Pat Curran?
(sportsnet.ca)
No disrespect to Gilbert Melendez, Nate Marquardt, Gegard Mousasi, or the plethora of world class mixed martial arts talent fighting overseas. Pat Curran is the best fighter not currently in the UFC. The 24-year-old became the Bellator featherweight champion Friday after a destruction of Joe Warren. Curran (17-4) knocked Warren out with a barrage of punches that followed a flush knee to the jaw in the third round of the main event at Bellator 60. Warren is considered one of the best wrestlers in the sport, but Curran defended his takedown attempts with ease. The few times he was taken down he showed great hip escapes and scrambled back to his feet quickly, reminiscent of UFC champions Junior dos Santos and Benson Henderson. Much like former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar, Warren is also known for being able to take a world of punishment and keep moving forward, but Curran certainly stopped him in his tracks.
