UFC Cuts Shannon Gugerty
In addition to the earlier reported release of Eliot Marshall, UFC has also released Shannon Gugerty. He was 2-3 in UFC but his UFN on Versus loss to Clay Guida gave him the dreaded "losing streak of doom" as well as dropping him to 1-3 in his last 4 fights. All his UFC losses, as well as his 2 wins, came by submission.
Fedor Return Confirmed For June
It's official: Fedor Emelianenko returns to Strikeforce in June. SF President Scott Coker has announced that the top Heavyweight fighter will return to the promotion in late June, but didn't give an exact date beyond late in the month, and as expected will face Fabricio Werdum. Coker also doesn't think rumors of Fedor facing Japanese fighter Hidehiko Yoshida in April in Japan are true, and still hasn't given a firm answer on if Alistair Overeem-Brett Rogers on 5/15 is for the SF Heavyweight Title.
Lift The Ban Watch: Reilly "Probably" Won't Vote Against MMA If Included In State Budget
Victory for MMA legislation in New York may finally be near. The biggest roadblock to MMA in the state-NY Assemblyman Bob Reilly-may be ready to wave the white flag. He's still against it, but should the legislation be in the state budget, he'll probably give up and not vote against it. He admits that the fiscal problems of the "Empire State" are "too big to be held up by a fight over mixed martial arts." Says Reilly, "It is violence for violence’s sake. And violence begets violence.... [But if the sanctioning of mixed martial arts is not removed from the budget process] Then I will probably not vote against it. As this will only be a small part of the budget."
Frank Mir Is Not Obsessed With Brock Lesnar As A Person-Just In Finding A Way To Beat Him
It was one of many topics he touched on during an appearance on Pro MMA Radio this past Monday. "It's a legitimate concern [focusing too much on Lesnar while overlooking (Shane) Carwin]. But I'm not so much obsessed with Lesnar as a person, as I am with the techniques and positioning he used to beat me. And it's an obsession that will do me well with this fight. If I don't improve upon those aspects of the game, Carwin is also a very strong and powerful guy who's a great wrestler, and he can do the same things to me that Brock did."
Jon Fitch: Promoters and fighters are dumbing down MMA to appease fair-weather fans
"I view them as fair-weather fans. They aren't mixed martial arts fans. They want to see K-1 kickboxing with small gloves and not MMA. I'm always working to finish fights. There are two guys in the fight, and if the other guy is looking to just survive, it's hard to finish. Promoters and fighters are dumbing down the sport to appease those fans. Those fans won't be there for the long haul and will turn their back on the sport as soon as they find the next big thing. I think referees standing fighters up too soon is one of the dumbest things that has been done recently. They need to let the fighters work on the ground, and not be so quick to bring the fighters back to their feet."
UFC welterweight contender Jon Fitch reacts to criticism surrounding his inability to finish fights after going 5-1 since 2007 with six decisions.
Following release from UFC, Eliot Marshall hopes to re-emerge in promotion this fall
"The Ultimate Fighter 8" veteran Eliot Marshall (8-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC) has been released from the UFC following his loss to Vladimir Matyushenko at UFC on Versus 1 this past Sunday.
Marshall blogged for MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) during his training camp for the fight.
"It is what it is, man," Marshall said today. "What do you want me to say? It sucks. What can you do? It's my own fault, and that's how it goes."
Two judges gave the former contender Matyushenko scores of 30-27 with one judge dissenting with a score a 29-28 in favor of Marshall. Overall, the bout was characterized by a distinct lack of action, and several times the crowd implored the fighters to engage.
Banged: Duane Ludwig Out Up To 6 Months
Duane Ludwig's manager today confirmed that the fighter suffered a severe ankle fracture in his fight with Darren Elkins at UFC on Versus over the weekend. Ludwig suffered a Maisonneuve fracture–a "spiral" fracture of the fibula bone often accompanied by a severe ankle sprain–to his left leg. Ludwig will undergo surgery on Friday to repair the damage and will have several pins inserted in the bones to stabilize them. He could be out 6 months but will be on crutches and unable to train for 3 months.
Dana White Expects Return To German TV, Not Ruling Out Live Event
While UFC may have recently gotten Das Boot from TV in Germany, it's nothing new for Dana White. The Bavarian state office for new media (BLM) announced this past Thursday that the UFC has been banned from German airwaves, but White said he expects a return to television partner DSF in the future. White also said the ruling doesn't mean that Germany, host of June 2009's UFC 99 event, won't see a live card in the meantime. No word on when the ban actually starts. Naturally Dana says they're working on it and it's similar to when UFC was banned from US PPV before the Fertittas purchased it in 2001.
UFC On Versus: 1.24 Million Viewers
The ratings for the first UFC on Versus event this past weekend are out. The broadcast did 1.24 million total viewers with 1.21 rating in the key 18-49 demo and a 1.66 rating in the target men 18-34 demo. While much better than the channel's average for WEC, it still fell short of the top 2 WEC broadcasts and was 27% below the ratings for Spike's last UFC broadcast (UFN 20).
Jon Jones Not Ready For Title Shot
That's the opinion of Dana White following Jones' TKO win over Brandon Vera at UFC on Versus, which has the Jones hype at an all-time high. White thinks Jones is a year away from a shot, and that's if he survives quite the gauntlet Dana threw down in his comments: Rashad Evans, Quinton Jackson, maybe Mauricio Rua or Lyoto Machida...then the shot. Yowza.
UFC "Indefinitely" Yanks Sherdog.com's Media Credentials
Two hours before doors opened Sunday at the 1stBank Center in Broomfield, Colo., a UFC official informed Sherdog.com -- the largest independent MMA media site on the Web, the official MMA content partner for ESPN.com, and my home as an executive editor from 2004-2008 -- that its access had been pulled indefinitely because of a "executive decision," multiple sources confirmed to SI.com.
Asked to comment on the decision to revoke Sherdog.com's access, UFC president Dana Whitetold SI.com via text that his reasoning was "none of your [expletive] business."
James Irvin's future at middleweight
"When James Irvin announced his intentions to drop to 185 pounds from his normal 205 there was no one more skeptical than me. Irvin had always been a guy with an action figure physique and to cut 20 pounds from a frame lacking in fat was going to take either losing muscle (strength) or a massive amount of dehydration before the weigh-ins (energy).
When Irvin showed up to the UFC on Versus 1 weigh-ins for his first fight in a year I don't think anyone was expecting to see this:"
Vera talks injuries
"The elbow that ended Brandon Vera's bout with Jon Jones at UFC on Versus 1 also did serious damage to Vera's face. Jeremy Botter first reported that Vera's face was broken in three places, and Cagewriter sources confirmed that Vera can't board a plane due to the injuries. "
Referee makes wrong call according to Dana White
"It was another one of those nights for the officials in the UFC. Referee Josh Rosenthal got it right in the James Irvin fight but Colorado officials and ref Herb Dean made a judgement error in the Paul Buentello-Cheick Kongo fight according to UFC president Dana White.
In the second round, Buentello appeared to injure a finger. The fight was stopped while doctors looked at the hand. Then they appeared to pop the finger back into place. "
White on "TUF 11" reports: "You're just going to have to watch and see what happens"
BROOMFIELD, Colo. – While the UFC put on another entertaining card on Sunday night with UFC on Versus 1, one of the most-discussed stories of the past week has been the potential involvement of Rich Franklin in the upcoming season of "The Ultimate Fighter 11."
While UFC president Dana White went out of his way to squash initial reports of an issue with Tito Ortiz during the show's now-complete filming, on Sunday night he softened his stance just a bit.
While White refused to address the situation head-on, he did tell a small group of reporters gathered following the UFC on Versus 1 post-event press conference that there may be more to the story than he's willing to divulge.
White says "we'd love to take" Shields, plays coy regarding Emelianenko
BROOMFIELD, Colo. – While the UFC will remain firmly in the MMA spotlight for the next 10 days with two more shows on the horizon, that focus will briefly shift in April for Strikeforce's second-ever CBS-broadcast event.
Headlining the April 17 "Strikeforce: Nashville" card is Strikeforce middleweight champ Jake Shields as he meets former UFC star Dan Henderson.
Following Sunday night's post-UFC on Versus 1 press conference, UFC president Dana White said he's not very fond of the matchup, but he is keeping an eye on Shields.
White says April 17 show was never planned, guarantees Strikeforce's demise
BROOMFIELD, Colo. – UFC president Dana White has seen his share of potential competitors fall by the wayside.
PRIDE was purchased. The IFL, EliteXC and Affliction all went belly up.
And though Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker has always insisted his organization has learned from the mistakes of those that came before him, UFC president Dana White on Sunday said it won't matter. Strikeforce – and more importantly, Showtime – are in White's sights, and he plans on taking them down.
"I really, really, really dislike these guys at Showtime," White said after UFC on Versus 1. "I really dislike them.
If James Irvin remains on UFC roster, it won't be at middleweight
Following Sunday's unfortunate eye injury and TKO loss to Alessio Sakara at UFC on Versus 1, James Irvin's future in the Ultimate Fighting Championship will be up for discussion among the UFC brass.
But if Irvin, who took a legal knuckle to the eye and couldn't continue in the Versus-televised fight, does remain in the UFC, it won't be at middleweight.
Following the event, UFC president Dana White told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) he was shocked by Irvin's frame and face after his first cut to middleweight and that he can't see booking the veteran fighter for another bout at 185 pounds.
UFC on Versus 1 bonuses: Three fighters earn $50,000 "KO of Night" awards
BROOMFIELD, Colo. – Jon Jones, Junior Dos Santos, John Howard and Clay Guida each earned $50,000 bonuses for their performances at Sunday's UFC on Versus 1 event.
For the first time ever, the organization dished out three "Knockout of the Night" awards (to Jon Jones, Junior Dos Santos and John Howard), a single "Submission of the Night" bonus (Clay Guida) and no "Fight of the Night" honors.
