Iowa Increasing Regulatory Control Over MMA
(mmaweekly.com) Mixed martial arts regulation has had its ups and downs in Iowa. Lawmakers attempted to deregulate MMA this past year, but were unsuccessful. In Iowa, MMA, boxing and wrestling are regulated by the Department of Labor.
Last Wednesday a bill was passed that called for more regulation of the sport. According to WFCCourier.com, the bill would require event promoters to apply for a license and pay a fee. Organizers would subsequently report ticket sales, gross receipts and volume of attendees to the state's labor commissioner.
In addition, fighters would have to apply for a permit, as well as submit a fee and undergo both an eye exam and a physical.
"This will go a long way towards professionalizing this sport," stated Representative Jamie Van Fossen.
As the sport continues to gain popularity and grow in Iowa, the need for regulation becomes more apparent every day. The passing of the bill is a step towards the regulation already in place in states such as Nevada, New Jersey, California, and others.

Shaw on Diaz-CSAC Marijuana Ordeal; Kimbo's Possible Opponent
(mmajunkie.com) EliteXC promoter Gary Shaw went on a rampage Thursday against California State Athletic Commission executive officer Armando Garcia for pulling Nick Diaz from Saturday's Strikeforce/Elite XC card.
"What happened (Wednesday) was a travesty to Nick Diaz," he said, noting Diaz was willing to take a drug test and was planning on passing it, but was pulled because he had revealed when getting his medicals done, that he had a medicinal marijuana card as treatment for attention deficit disorder.
Marijuana is on the banned substance list in California, and Diaz's biggest win of his career, over Takanori Gomi last year, was stripped in Nevada because he tested positive for the drug. Garcia said he couldn't publicly comment on the situation other than say there wasn't time to go through the procedures necessary to clear Diaz to fight.

Filho is home in Niterói, Brazil. Doctors said the fact that he sought help and was determined to recover aided his quick improvement.

Former Pride executive speaks out about company's downfall
(sportsline.com) The name Turi Altavilla is a name unknown to many mainstream MMA fans. However, among insiders he's one of the most well-respected behind-the-scenes figures in the sport. Three-and-a-half years after graduating UCLA and after having gotten his start with King of the Cage almost right out of school, Altavilla became the first American hired by Pride USA's office in Los Angeles as their Vice President of Production and Marketing.
Don Frye talks Kimbo
(mmajunkie.com)
With MMA's network television debut two months away, EliteXC has yet to name an opponent for headliner Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson (2-0). One rumored match-up has been ruled out, however: Don "The Predator" Frye (19-6-1).
Frye addressed the rumored bout during his weekly "Don Frye-Days" segment on Friday's edition of TAGG Radio (TAGG Radio Network - Home of TAGG Radio & The Lights Out Show!), a content partner of MMAjunkie.com (MMA blog for UFC news, UFC rumors, fighter interviews and event previews/recaps - MMAjunkie.com).

Maurice Smith Calls in Sick to Avoid YAMMA Show
(cagepotato.com) Seriously. It’s now officially ****** up. Let’s count the fighters that Bob Meyrowitz’s YAMMA 1 event has lost to date:
– Headliner Don Frye
– Gary Goodridge
– Frye’s replacement, Patrick Smith
– Rex Richards
– Two undisclosed members of the heavyweight tournament
The fight card on YAMMA’s site has still not been updated, but we’ll try and keep score for ya’. It was reported earlier that Ricco Rodriguez had been tapped to fill in as one of the replacements in the eight-man tourney, but we’re still not sure where that one stands. Rex Richards was replaced by Kevin Jordan. Don Frye had pulled out for whatever reason — probably because he realized how terrible the card is — and Patrick Smith took over. Then Pat Smith had been dropped due to arrest scheduling and 90-year-old Maurice Smith had been submitted as his replacement

Tito Ortiz to create reality show Anytown Beatdown
(hollywoodreporter.com) Consider Tito Ortiz rehired.
The former Ultimate Fighting Championship title-holder might have been terminated by Donald Trump, but he's been tapped by G4 to create a reality show.
Houston Alexander – Moving Forward
(ufc.com) No excuses. That’s all Houston Alexander will give you when it comes to his first UFC loss last November to Thiago Silva. No talk of woulda, coulda, shoulda; no pointing of fingers at anyone other than the man in the mirror. It’s not what you expect from any pro athlete these days, but the Nebraska resident is anything but stereotypical.
“A loss is a loss and you shouldn’t have to make an excuse for it,” said Alexander of the first round TKO defeat at UFC 78. “I should have done something to prevent it.”
WAR HOUSTON
Josh Neer – The Dentist is In
(ufc.com) He won’t talk your ear off, do backflips in the Octagon, or make the daily papers for some outrageous antics. Josh Neer just fights. But that’s just fine with UFC fans who have clamored for the hard-nosed Iowa banger to return to the organization after an absence of almost 20 months.
And in his typically understated manner, he’s happy to be back.
“It feels good,” said Neer. “It’s just a different atmosphere in the UFC, and in these smaller shows it’s just not the same.”
