Thiago Alves on Facing Georges St. Pierre at UFC 100: 'I Was Born For This'
(mma.fanhouse.com) Thiago Alves and Georges St. Pierre joined the media Thursday for a conference call regarding their UFC 100 welterweight title match.
Suffice it to say, this matchup lacks the venom of St. Pierre's last championship defense against BJ Penn, as both combatants were quick to praise each other.
Rich Franklin Needs a New Contract Before He'll Take His Next UFC Fight
(mma.fanhouse.com) After his impressive win over Wanderlei Silva in the main event at UFC 99, Rich Franklin's future has been a subject of a great deal of speculation among UFC fans, with talk that he could fight a young up-and-comer like Luiz Cane or an Octagon legend like Chuck Liddell or Tito Ortiz. But Franklin said on this week's episode of ESPN.com's MMA Live that it's way too early to determine his next step because first he needs to renegotiate his contract.
Franklin was asked whether he expected to headline UFC 103, which is tentatively scheduled for September 19 in Dallas, and he said he wasn't sure.
JOEY VILLASENOR IS BACK, TAKING AIM AT BIG NAMES
(mmaweekly.com) As someone once said, “Good things come to those who wait.”
That has never been more evident than it was recently for Strikeforce middleweight contender Joey Villasenor.
After a year in limbo, predicated by the downfall of EliteXC and numerous fight delays, he finally returned to action last Friday victorious over Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos at the second edition of ShoMMA: Strikeforce Challengers Series on Showtime.
WEC's Fredson Paixao literally worked his way from the floors up
(mmajunkie.com) As a boy in a poor Brazilian town in the heart of the Amazon, Fredson Paixao loved kung fu.
Jiu jitsu, of course, is considered by many the martial art of choice in his native country. But Paixao loved the aerial displays of Bruce Lee movies, dreaming of making such flying moves.
But, with a factory-working mother and three siblings, Paixao also had to find a way to earn some money. That need led him to a local dojo, where he swept the floors for the teacher he met through friends. As a tradeoff, the teacher gave him free jiu-jitsu lessons.
Report: Cerrone vs. Henderson set for WEC in September, title implications not yet determined
(mmajunkie.com) Top WEC lightweight contender Donald Cerrone (10-1 MMA, 3-1 WEC) will meet fast-rising prospect Ben Henderson (9-1 MMA, 2-0 WEC) at an as-yet-unannounced WEC event in September according to a report from **********.com.
Cerrone had been expected to compete in a lightweight title rematch with Jamie Varner, but recent complications in the champ's recovery process from a hand injury have forced the change in opponent for Cerrone.
Georges St. Pierre: Thiago Alves Would Whip B.J. Penn
(mma.fanhouse.com) The rivalry between Georges St Pierre and BJ Penn is over in the sense that they're not going to step into the Octagon together again, but it's far from over in the sense that they're not going to stop talking about each other any time soon.
Penn has repeatedly called St. Pierre a cheater, and St. Pierre, in a call to promote UFC 100, took a swipe at Penn in discussing his upcoming opponent, Thiago Alves.

"Bisping will out-wrestle Henderson", says Rampage's coach
(fightersonlymagazine.co.uk) Wolfslair wrestling coach Zach Light has made a bold prediction: he says Mike Bisping will out-wrestle Dan Henderson at UFC 100.
"He will take Dan Henderson down more than one time in the fight. He will, that's how he is going to win the fight. That is how I see it. When they start trading I think Mike will win the scrambles. Dan is a great scrambler but in a scramble situation I think Mike is going to come out on top every time," he tells Fighters Only.
Still disappointed by UFC 99 loss to Hardy, Davis seeks changes in MMA judging
(mmajunkie.com) Nearly two weeks after his UFC 99 split-decision loss to Dan Hardy, UFC welterweight Marcus Davis (16-5 MMA, 8-3 UFC) still believes the win was awarded to the wrong fighter.
But the 36-year-old realizes there's no sense in complaining over what could have been, and he's hoping for a chance to revisit the decision as soon as possible.
In the meantime, Davis told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio) he's hoping the criteria by which judges around the world determine winners and losers can be given a much-needed update and increased clarification.
With champion Mike Brown on brief hiatus, WEC's featherweight title future remains undecided
(mmajunkie.com) With WEC featherweight champion Mike Brown's (22-4 MMA, 4-0 WEC) recent victories over top 145-pound contenders Urijah Faber and Leonard Garcia, the division's title picture was opened to several willing contenders.
However, the organization is deep on talent, and several worthy potential adversaries have recently stepped forward.
With two of the top options, Jose Aldo (15-1 MMA, 5-0 WEC) and Wagnney Fabiano (12-1 MMA, 2-0 WEC), hailing from the same Nova Uniao camp, WEC co-founder and general manager Reed Harris recently said the organization has yet to determine who Brown will face next.
Georges St. Pierre and Thiago Alves all about respect and confidence heading into UFC 100 title fight
(mmamania.com) UFC 100 is set to go down from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Saturday, July 11. The monumental fight card is poised to be perhaps the biggest pay-per-view (PPV) event in the relatively short history of the sport.
The promotion heightened the hoopla today with the first installment of its tried and true media call. The cast of characters this time around featured welterweight champion George St. Pierre and number one contender Thiago Alves — Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir are scheduled to hit the airwaves next week.
Two words can sum up the tone of today’s UFC 100 media call: Respect and confidence.
DREAM 11: Andrews Nakahara vs Zelg Galesic in the works for Sept. 23
(mmamania.com) Karate stylist Andrews Nakahara is set to do battle with Croatian sensation Zelg Galesic in a middleweight showdown at DREAM 11 on September 23 from the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan, according to Tatame.com.
The pair were originally penciled in to clash at DREAM 8 this past April, however Galesic fell ill and was admitted to the hospital which forced him to pull out of the fight just two weeks before it was set to go down.
Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone: Ben Henderson ‘is a worthy opponent’ and Jamie Varner ‘is a ***’
(mmamania.com) “I kind of figured that (Ben Henderson) is who they would put me in against. I was looking forward to maybe having a rematch with Rob McCullough. Benson is definitely a worth opponent. He is a friend of mine which is the one thing that sucks. I have grown up fighting alongside the guy. I have no problems whatsoever taking the fight; I just have to go in there with someone I like. There is nothing bad you can say about that guy, he is just a real good dude. I will be in there 100% ready to fight though. I just won’t have the hatred in my heart like I would with Jaime Varner. Benson is a solid wrestler so I see him trying to take me down right away. I don’t see him wanting to stand with me. But you never know, it would be cool if he did. My takedown defense sucks so I am going to really have to work on that. If he ends up in my guard I will be busy going for submissions at every turn. Maybe Varner will come back in 2010 to unify the belt. But they might have to break his arm off and get him a new one. Can I add that Jaime Varner is a ***?”
Lost in the Shuffle: Where Does Luis Cane Fit in the UFC Light Heavyweight Picture?
(bloodyelbow.com) The "sniper" has been a sports' metaphor used to describe an athlete that usually performs in an outstanding manner while staying under the radar. Specifically, athletes who have been labeled snipers normally come up with big plays in the clinch or put up huge numbers quietly while mainstream media and other analysts focus on the bigger stars. We've usually come accustomed to hearing this moniker in sports like soccer, hockey, or basketball due to the "shooting" abilities of players within those sports, but the moniker can also be placed on UFC light heavyweight fighter Luis Cane.
Mike Ciesnolevicz & Tim Boetsch Released From UFC
(mmaweekly.com) The current downsizing of the UFC’s packed roster continued recently, as MMAWeekly.com has learned the promotion has released Mike Ciesnolevicz, who joins fellow light heavyweight Tim Boetsch on the outside of the Octagon looking in.
Boetsch made waves when he stepped in as a late replacement for Tomasz Drwal at UFC 81 and defeated David Heath in impressive fashion, but went 2-2 for the promotion, with his most recent appearance being a unanimous decision loss to Jason Brilz at UFC 96 in March. He was released shortly thereafter.
Cerrone says Henderson fight in the works, has harsh words for Varner
(demandmma.com)
Although nothing is confirmed, Donald Cerrone expects to take on Ben Henderson at some point in the near future. He also badmouths Jamie Varner with some language that is sure to incite controversy.
