The Punk talks about his huge win
Josh Thomson interview with Sherdog. He talks about the win, the pre interviews, who helped him out, rankings, and how he would dominate any other lightweight fighter in any organization.
After his great preformance I wouldn't be as quick as I was this fight to bet against him.
Thomson Takes Strikeforce Title in San Jose
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Josh Thomson (Pictures) certainly picked the opportune night to fight up to the potential that most within the sport knew he possessed.
Shoulder surgery, its rehabilitation, a staph infection, and the loss of his father over a year-and-half ago seemed to stack itself firmly against the San Jose fighter. If you bought into Thomson's pre-fight chatter, you might have thought the 29-year-old was bracing himself for inevitable defeat against Strikeforce lightweight champion and top-10 ranked Gilbert Melendez (Pictures).
BROCK LARSON TALKS PRATER & ALESSIO
These are interesting times for World Extreme Cagefighting welterweight contender Brock Larson.
Just under a year ago, he had his nine-fight winning streak broken by WEC champ Carlos Condit. Quickly rebounding with a win over Troy Allison to close out the year, Larson looked to make his case for a return match with Condit in 2008.
In something of a grudge match set up by disparaging comments made by John Alessio towards Larson’s legitimacy as a title contender, Larson came out on top when Alessio was flagged for an illegal knee strike, ending their bout. Shortly thereafter a scuffle broke out between the two and the war of words has continued to rage on from Alessio.
Babalu: "Who fires first wins."
Renato "Babalu" had two fights called off this year. At last he is going to fight at Affliction: "Banned" Jul 6th. He hasn't fought since his last victory over Rodney Faverus. The new Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt will face Mike Whitehead.
Babalu is training in Gracie Barra, California, and at Josh Barnett Team.
Graciemag.com sat down and talked with the Brazilian fighter:
Shaw To Monson: "Get Some Wins Before You Call Out Kimbo"
Doing his best Brett Rogers impersonation, Jeff Monson recently released a video calling out Kimbo Slice. Monson decided to go the video route because as he put it, "I know the (explitive) doesn't read."
During the video tirade, Monson called on EliteXC President Gary Shaw to make the match up between he and Kimbo; today the younger Shaw, EliteXC Vice President and matchmaker Jared Shaw responds:
Pedro Rizzo: "If I Beat Barnett I Will Be Top 10 Again"
Considered one of the greatest heavyweights of all time at the MMA, Pedro Rizzo went through a bad phase and now is fighting again to be among the 10 best heavyweights in the world. His chance to return to the top will be on July 19, when he will face the fourth fighter of the world at the weight, Josh Barnett, at the event Affliction. To make it happen, the athlete is training heavy and received in the last week the help of his teacher, Marco Ruas, who was in visiting his family. Below an exclusive interview with Pedro Rizzo, who talks about his training and hopes at the new American event.
Jesse Taylor to fight on July 19?
Fight Hype has the scoop on the possible return of Jesse “J.T. Money” Taylor to the Octagon:
Despite being kicked out of The Ultimate Fighter Finale, it appears that Jesse Taylor is set to make his return to the UFC. Sources close to the situation have informed us that, less than one month after he was supposed to face Amir Sadollah in the finale, Taylor will be entering the Octagon on the July 19th card headlined by Anderson Silva vs. James Irvin.
Interview With Dustin Hazelett
Amir Sadollah garnered a lot of deserved press last week for winning the middleweight tournament for the seventh season of “The Ultimate Fighter.” However, the biggest winner at last week’s finale might have been up and coming welterweight Dustin Hazelett.
Hazelett, a member of Team Jorge Gurgel, won bonuses for both “Submission of the Night” and “Fight of the Night.” Despite the fact that his upset victory against Josh Burkman was not televised, the performance still helped elevate Hazelett’s profile and the event essentially served as his coming out party.
Matt Riddle Talks About Jesse Taylor's Rampage
Matt Riddle talked with TAGG Radio yesterday and gave some more insight into the events that led up to Jesse Taylor getting kicked out of the TUF 7 finals. MMA Junkie has the quotes:
Sorry if this has already been posted. I thought it gave a clearer picture of just how out of control this got.
CUNG LE LIKELY TO FIGHT AGAIN IN 2008
“He’ll be back in the gym. He’s still training, and he’ll be back at it,” he stated.
Afromowitz also mentioned the possibility of different opponents for Le in his next fight, ranging from a rematch with Shamrock to a showdown with a top ranked middleweight.
“You know, it’s a possibility he might wind up fighting (Kazuo) Misaki, who we were hoping he’d fight last November, but there was scheduling conflicts on Misaki’s side, so it didn’t happen,” Afromowitz commented on potential opponents. “Misaki’s a fighter that we recently signed, so Cung may wind up fighting him or he may just go back and fight Frank (Shamrock) again for his next fight, but he’ll be back.”
As previously mentioned, Le’s next movie project is set to begin filming over the next few months, but Strikeforce executives are expecting him to fight again in 2008.
“I think he’ll fight one more fight before the end of this year,” stated Afromowitz.
Fans will also have to wait to see Le’s role in Tekken as well because the film is not slated to hit theatres until sometime in 2009
Jake Shields targets Nick Thompson for EliteXC title fight
EliteXC's first-ever welterweight champion will be determined in July, when the organization returns to the CBS airwaves. Veterans Jake Shields (20-4-1) and Nick Thompson (36-9-1), each riding impressive win streaks, will square off for the belt.
Shields can't wait.
After all, he hand picked his opponent.
Shields discussed the events leading up to the bout on a recent edition of TAGG Radio (www.taggradio.com), the official radio partner of MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com).
"I'm really excited about this fight," Shields said. "I think we're both, me and Nick, right at the top of our group. We're both on a huge win streak. This is the fight I asked for."
The title fight takes place July 19 at the Stockton Arena in Stockton, Calif. Shields expected to fight on the nationally televised event, but he didn't initially expect Thompson to be his opponent.
Shields had long been planning to face UFC veteran Drew Fickett for the belt. Strangely, however, Fickett pulled out of a scheduled June date with Shields due to injury, only to compete in a smaller organization around the same time.
"It's kind of weird," Shields said. "I don't know what happened. I know I was supposed to fight him on the 14th (of June), and on the 7th he fought someone else. I think it was (a) really easy (fight) on the 7th. ... Obviously it was a stupid move. I don't know what he was thinking. That EliteXC would just be like, 'no big deal?' Obviously they weren't happy if they dropped his contract."
Sokoudjou: "He's the guy I go home and study"
"Hopefully, Mr. Joe Silva will give me the fight I want. I've fought twice in the UFC and both times, it was for the UFC and the guys they wanted me to fight. I hope this time they will give me the guy I want for a change and I will be happy," stated UFC light heavyweight Sokoudjou as he continues to stress his desire to face Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. Check out what else he had to say as he explains why a fight with Rua is important to him. Plus, Sokoudjou shares his thoughts on Anderson Silva and Brandon Vera fighting at light heavyweight and much more.
One more rung?: Interview with Ricardo Almeida
Climbing the ladder to the top of the UFC middleweight division just might go through Hamilton, New Jersey. That’s because that’s where the Ricardo Almeida Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (RABJJ) Academy is and where Ricardo Almeida is preparing for UFC 86 when he will take on heavy-handed Patrick Cote for a fight that could very well have title implications.

James Irvin: The Spoiler?
The UFC is banking on Anderson Silva getting a highlight reel knockout win over James Irvin on July 19th. While I do think that is the most likely result, Irvin is definitely capable of knocking Silva out. This is nowhere near the "safe" fight some people are making it out to be.
Exclusive Interview: Quinton “Rampage” Jackson
Quinton “Rampage” Jackson is one of MMA’s most charismatic stars, but the UFC light heavyweight champ has also become one of the world’s best fighters since moving from Pride to the UFC. In this exclusive interview, “Rampage” discusses his evolution as an athlete, his upcoming title fight against Forrest Griffin, and what he hates most about life as an MMA fighter.
Edson Draggo in a coma, in "grave condition"
Today, we received a call from the black belt Mario Sperry informing us that the boxer and MMA fighter Edson Draggo, suffered a serious motorcycle accident in Rio de Janeiro. "Ï received a call from Sul saying that he had suffered a motorcycle accident. I called Thiago Silva, who is in Rio at his house, and he told me that he did not know about Draggo, that he left yesterday afternoon and didn't come back
