UFC 149's Brian Ebersole happy to stay busy with short-notice fight against James Head
(mmajunkie.com)
Brian Ebersole could get used to this whole fighting-every-month thing. The veteran welterweight was coming off a hard-fought unanimous decision win over T.J. Waldburger at UFC on FX 4 this past month in Atlantic City when he got the call that the injury-riddled UFC 149 card could use his help. Naturally, it's a call he answered, and answered with vigor. Ebersole will fight James Head on Saturday, filling in for the injured Claude Patrick in a bout he took on less than three weeks' notice. And for Ebersole, that's just fine.

Forget Anderson Silva – UFC 149's Hector Lombard wants Mark Munoz after Tim Boetsch
(mmajunkie.com)
CALGARY, Alberta, Canada – Hector Lombard hasn't even had his first fight in the UFC yet, and he's up to four opponents. Sort of. Lombard (31-2-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) originally was set to debut against Brian Stann – and then, perhaps, quickly fight middleweight champion Anderson Silva. The Stann fight fell through. He rebooked against Tim Boetsch (15-4 MMA, 6-3 UFC), whom he fights Saturday at UFC 149. But on Wednesday, he told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) he wants to fight Mark Munoz next – even if the UFC offers him a title shot with Silva. "Saturday, I'm focused on this fight," Lombard told MMAjunkie.com after a workout session in Calgary. "And after that, I'm going to call Mark Munoz out. I'm focused on the fight, but I'm going to call out Mark Munoz after. That's my goal. "I'm going to make a statement no matter what. But after that, I'm going to beat up Mark Munoz." Lombard said Munoz, who a week ago suffered a brutal knockout loss at the hands of Chris Weidman at UFC on FUEL TV 4, has been running his mouth about him. And that, Lombard said, has rubbed him the wrong way. "He's been talking a lot of trash about me," said Lombard, the former Bellator middleweight champ. "I'm one of those fighters that I don't like to talk about any fighter. I'm focused on myself. When I see people that do the wrong things, I have to do something about it."

Anderson Silva's camp wants Luke Rockhold next, not Hector Lombard or Chris Weidman
(mmamania.com)
FUEL TV's "UFC Tonight" broke down the situation, where they reported some comments that were recently made by Anderson Silva's management. "One of Anderson Silva's managers said that one of the issues with Hector Lombard is he thinks he needs at least three more impressive wins in the UFC. He said that 85 percent of UFC fans don't even know who Hector Lombard is, who is of course making his Octagon debut on Saturday night." "As for Chris Weidman, he said, 'Well, there's another great unknown fighter.' He doesn't see those match ups as being money making pay-per-view events." "He did mention Luke Rockhold, who is the Strikeforce middleweight champion. Alas, Rockhold is contractually tied to Strikeforce, so that fight's not happening. We'll have to wait and see, but right now, the Anderson Silva camp not too excited about the options out there."

Pat Healy: ‘I’ve Earned a (Strikeforce) Title Shot’
(mmaweekly.com)
“I think I’m putting together a lot of momentum and my game is real solid right now,” said Healy. “I think I’ll be a tough fight for anybody. I think I’ve earned a title shot – more so than anybody in Strikeforce – so I’d really like to see me getting a shot at Gil. “I’m definitely not saying its Gil or nothing. If (Strikeforce feels) like I need to do another fight, that’s what I’ll do. I’m a fighter and I’ll fight whoever they put in front of me, but I feel like I’ve done enough. If they don’t, I’ll fight whoever I have to.”

The Association Of Boxing Commissions Makes Significant Changes To The Unified Rules Of MMA
(bloodyelbow.com)
Last year, BE's Dallas Winston covered the annual Association of Boxing Commission (ABC) annual conference. For MMA fans, the most impactful ruling to come out of the 2011 conference was the trial period for Doc Hamilton's proposed Half-Point Scoring System from the 2010 meetings. This year, however, the ABC has made several decisions with direct effects on mixed martial arts. First, the death of the half-point system. After the year-long, voluntary evaluation period granted to the half-point system, the ABC concluded that the system had negligible impact on scoring the outcome of an MMA bout...

Chael Sonnen responds to "Rampage" Jackson: "He should stick to violating female reporters"
(mmatorch.com)
Quinton "Rampage" Jackson had some harsh comments toward Chael Sonnen following Sonnen's UFC 148 loss to Anderson Silva. The comments he made to MMA Elite were in part a response to some of the comments Sonnen has levied his way in the past, but it once again brought about more from "The American Gangster." Sonnen served as a guest analyst on Tuesday's new edition of "UFC Tonight" program, and in typical Sonnen fashion he addressed what Jackson said about him. "Rampage has one fight left in the UFC and he isn't fighting me," Sonnen said. "I give you that answer because I am sitting here wearing my fancy suit, with an ear piece on and I have been branded an analyst on the number one UFC show on TV today." "But if you had asked me outside, in my kingdom and I was wearing my sponsor's shirt, I would have told him that he should stick to violating female reporters," Sonnen said. "He should stick to making box office disasters and driving the wrong way on the freeway ramped up on Mountain Dew, because he's not on my level. But, you didn't ask me outside, you asked me inside. So let's keep this professional, I don't want to get that message out there."

Bruce Lee claimed as 'father' of Mixed Martial Arts
(bbc.co.uk)
Of all the credits attached to the name Bruce Lee, one of the bolder claims made in the documentary I Am Bruce Lee, is that he was the de facto father of Mixed Martial Arts What do you guys think? could also be considered to be a father of MMA. I personally don't think there is any one 'father' of MMA. Nor does there need to be, MMA is a culmination of a "fighting" effort by mankind

(mmajunkie.com)
Hopefully John Lineker (19-6 MMA, 0-1 UFC) will have backup this time. After a difficult trip from Brazil to New Jersey for UFC on FOX 3, Lineker, who was defeated by Louis Gaudinot in his octagon debut, gets a chance at redemption when he meets Yasuhiro Urushitani (19-5-6 MMA, 0-1 UFC) at UFC 151.

Vitor Belfort vs Chris Weidman? 'The Phenom' gunning for an 'All American' showdown
(mmamania.com)
Undefeated top 185-pound prospect Chris Weidman (9-0), who recently smashed fellow contender Mark Munoz at UFC on FUEL TV 4, is ready for a crack at the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight title, currently held by reigning division champion Anderson Silva. But you knew that. What you didn't know, perhaps, is that Vitor Belfort might be standing in his way. That's according to a report from Tatame.com, who gets the skinny from "The Phenom" himself as the Brazilian gears up for his next fight in Rio. "(Chris) Weidman, or the winner of the Cuban vs. (Tim) Boetsch. I'm waiting for my confirmation on the Rio card, see who's gonna be my opponent. Nobody send me anything yet. I believe I'll get an answer on that next week. Muñoz has no guard, he's not a jiu-jitsu fighter. That's a wrestler vs. wrestler match-up, who got to the top position would win. He was tagged, that's it. I don't care what [Weidman's] gonna do. I know what I'm gonna do: Go for the knockout or the submission."

Rampage Jackson: Forrest Griffin is a little crybaby and Chael Sonnen sucks
(mmamania.com)
"Tito won. Forrest even knew it, that's why he ran out of the cage like a little crybaby like he always does. C'mon. Somebody told him, 'Forrest, get your ass back to the cage! You won, idiot! We're gonna give it to you!' Stupid, man. I think Chael should keep his word and leave the UFC because that's what he said he was gonna do if he lost. And he lost HORRIBLY. Bad! Chael sucks. He should go somewhere where people like his interviews, the way he talks shit on everybody. I can't stand that boy. Fuck Chael."

ABC demurs on half-point system in pilot program, scoring criteria modified
(mmajunkie.com)
A committee formed to assess the effectiveness of a half-point MMA scoring system has recommended the Association of Boxing Commissions stick with the current 10-point must system. In a report obtained today by MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com), the committee found that the half-point system would have a minimal effect on scoring and recommended further training and vetting of judges with the current system. "We thought putting in a more complicated system would hurt more fights than would help," said Jeff Mullen, who chaired the ABC's committee on half-points. The committee, which was formed in 2010, hoped recent revisions in scoring criteria would "help aid the judges in making more accurate scores." The findings were not glowing. Andy Foster, secretary of the Georgia Athletic and Entertainment Commission, stated there were no changes to scores using the half-point system and "did not do a thing to affect judging." Colorado State Boxing Commission Director Josef Mason found the half-point system scores helpful in training judges, but believed it ultimately would cause more draws. The Edmonton Alberta Athletic Commission found that 4.85 percent of fight results were changed in which the half-point system replaced the 10-point must. It recommended commissions use the system if they desired, but cautioned that it was unsuitable for inexperienced judges – although a poll of fighters revealed overwhelming support for half-points. And the California Amateur Mixed Martial Arts Organization (CAMO), which regulates amateur MMA competitions in lieu of the California State Athletic Commission, found just 2 percent of its decisions changed in 389 bouts comparing the systems.

Showtime Sports Boss Denies Existence of List of Strikeforce Fighters Blocked From UFC
(mmafighting.com)
Showtime Sports president Stephen Espinoza on Monday denied the existence of a list of Strikeforce fighters that are banned from signing with the UFC during the lifetime of the Strikeforce-Showtime deal. Over the weekend, veteran MMA journalist Dave Meltzer reported that Showtime and Strikeforce and UFC parent company Zuffa had agreed to a list of fighters who could not cross promotional boundaries from Strikeforce to the UFC, even if their contracts expired, making them free agents. According to him, fighters including Gilbert Melendez, Luke Rockhold and Ronda Rousey were on the list. On Monday's edition of The MMA Hour, Espinoza said the report was erroneous. Espinoza said that because Showtime isn't an MMA promoter, they have no existing deals with fighters that can limit their movement. What they do have is a contract with Zuffa that allows them to broadcast the talent pool of Strikeforce-contracted talent. "That roster of talent at the point we entered into the contract is attached to our contract informationally," he said. "But all this stuff about controlling people when they’re free agents and things like that, that’s not true." Espinoza did acknowledge that the UFC could not bring Melendez or any other fighter over from Strikeforce if that fighter had existing fights on his current Strikeforce deal. "Putting it in context, that’s the case for all other MMA promotions, that's the case for all other professional sports," he said. "If you're under contract in MLS you can't go sign in the European league. If you're under contract in the NBA, you cant go sign in another league while you're under contract with the NBA. It's the same thing. While you're under contract to Strikeforce, you can't go sign a contract with another organization."

RFA signs UFC veteran and top bantamweight prospect to exclusive multi-fight deals
(prommanow.com)
The Resurrection Fighting Alliance (RFA) added two more names to its ever growing stable of fighters last week when it announced that it had signed both UFC veteran Tyson Griffin (15-6) and top bantamweight prospect Chris Holdsworth (3-0) to exclusive multi-fight contracts. Griffin, who signed a three-fight deal with the Nebraska based MMA promotion, is best known for his five year run in the UFC, which began in 2006. During that time, Griffin would earn wins over the likes of Clay Guida, Rafael dos Anjos and Manny Gamburyan before being cut from the organization late last year after going 1-4 in his last five bouts. Currently training at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas, Griffin is expected to return to the lightweight division following his brief stint at featherweight. RFA also announced that it had signed Chris Holdsworth to a four-fight deal. Holdsworth, who is a Marc Laimon jiu-jitsu black belt, has won all nine of his bouts (three professional and six amateur) within the first round.

UFC 153: Glover Teixeira talks accepting the Rampage Jackson fight and the Shogun controversy
(mmamania.com)
Glover Teixeira is one of the prospects the UFC had its eye on for an incredibly long time, but hurdle after hurdle got in the way of his signing with the world's largest promotion. Teixeira spoke with Sherdog.com about his upcoming fight and had a few very interesting things to say: On accepting the fight against Jackson: "I knew more or less what would happen. They had offered me this fight and I accepted right away, as I accepted Shogun." On what he expects from "Rampage:" "I'm going out with him in the standup. I have to be smart and not stand still, move, fight the right fight. But, I'll work on the strategy with my coaches." On reports that former champion Mauricio Rua turned down a fight against him, saying he'd rather be cut from the UFC than fight Teixeira: "I don't think it's something from Shogun. He's not guilty. It should be something from the manager. Shogun has fought the best and wouldn't have any reason to deny a fight against me. Leave that alone."

Rashad Evans 50/50 On Possible Move To Middleweight
(bjpenn.com)
“I’ve been thinking about going down to middleweight lately. I haven’t totally made up my mind. It’s something I’m going to think about a little more in the coming months and see where my body’s at, but I’m definitely giving it serious consideration. The odds of me moving down to 185 are 50-50 or better.” … “The last thing I want to do is move down and become half the athlete I am at 205. That’s something that happened to me while wrestling in college (at Michigan State). I cut too much weight, and if I had competed one weight class higher I would have had a better career. A move to 185 will be permanent. But what I’ve been thinking about also is that I’m one of the top contenders at 205, so there really is no reason for me to move other than fighting some different people. At 205 I fight tough guys anyway. Jon Jones is a tough dude. I’m a 205-pound fighter and the reason I’ve been successful is that I have attributes that, being a smaller guy, I’m able to bring, like having the speed advantage, things like that. It’s something I might not necessarily have at 185. That’s something I have to think about as well.”
