(punchdrunkgamer.com) PunchDrunkGamer’s Best of 2012 – Mixed Martial Arts Awards
2012 was quite the year for fans of mixed martial arts and combat sports. The UFC saw its chokehold on the sport increase greatly in conjunction with their network deal with FOX. Glory Sports International revived DREAM and with Strikeforce closing it’s doors, Bellator MMA has secured their standing as the number two MMA organization on the planet. Women’s MMA also crashed the party with the emergence of Invicta FC and the first female fighter to join the UFC. Despite many injuries and fight card fuck-ups, mixed martial arts fans were still treated to some amazing fights, knockouts, submissions, and the rise of new fighters both male and female. Below are the best of 2012 Mixed Martial Arts Awards presented by PunchDrunkGamer.
Vinny Magalhaes Speaks Out Against Internet Warriors
(bjpenn.com)Very few things irritate me more than fans trying to be “wanna be tough guys”, “internet warriors”, or whatever variations we have to describe these type of people… Fans are definitely entitled to give their opinion about this or that fighter, they’re definitely entitled to ‘think’ that this guy is better than that other guy but going to the fighter’s twitter and talk shit to him, which is something that they would never do to the fighter’s face, it’s something really embarrassing…

The Flyweights Battle for Acceptance as Main Event for UFC on Fox 6
(mmaweekly.com)Mixed martial arts fighters are always fighting for something bigger than just the other guy or girl standing across the cage from them.
For years following Senator John McCain’s infamous reference to the UFC as “human cockfighting”, competitors and promotions alike had to battle the perception that MMA was not much more than legalized bar fights complete with bloody battles and little in the way of rules.
The culture of the sport started to change as more and more state athletic commissions began approving MMA, so long as they followed a strict code of regulations like any other competition. It was still an uphill battle until the UFC really got a stranglehold of fans following the initial run of the Ultimate Fighter on Spike TV that showcased fighters both in and out of the cage in a reality show format.
MMA still battles for recognition today, but the sport is much more widely accepted now than it ever was before, and as the UFC moved onto Fox television in late 2011, just about everybody took notice that this mixed martial arts thing wasn’t going away...

(bloodyelbow.com)UFC Lightweight has a big fight just around the corner against Anthony Pettis at UFC On Fox 6. The contest was originally supposed to go down in the summer of 2012, but an injury and subsequent surgery for Pettis left Cerrone fighting teammate Melvin Guillard at UFC 150 instead.
Now, with the fight he's been waiting for coming up in only a week, Cerrone decided to go rock climbing. UFC president Dana White didn't seem happy with his decision.
