Benson Henderson wants to fight Georges St-Pierre after Melendez
The UFC called 2013 the year of the superfight, and now lightweight champion Benson Henderson has thrown his name into the discussion.
Henderson intends to request a blockbuster match-up against UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre following his upcoming title defense against Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez on April 20, 2013 at UFC on FOX 7. UFC Tonight first reported the news.
"My main focus is on defending my title against Gilbert Melendez on April 20," Henderson told MMAFighting.com in a statement. "That's it. But I am a fan of the sport on top of being a competitor. I see all this talk about super fights and other fighters getting to dictate what weight classes they want to move up and down to in order to get title shots. I'm the UFC's lightweight champion and I feel I should be allowed to make such statements myself.
"I want to fight in the biggest fights and against the best fighters," he continued. "Georges St. Pierre is one of the greatest fighters in our sport's history. Of course I'd love to fight him, and I think the fans would want to see that fight too. It would be an honor to go up against such a great competitor, especially with a title on the line.
Matthew Riddle again tests positive for marijuana, cut from UFC
Matthew Riddle (8-3 MMA, 8-3 UFC) was off on his timetable to cease marijuana usage prior to a fight.
The welterweight fighter on Tuesday confirmed to MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio) that he failed his second post-fight drug test for marijuana and has been released from the UFC.
Riddle flunked a test following UFC on FUEL TV 7, where he earned a split call against Che Mills (15-6 MMA, 2-2 UFC).
Report: Evan Dunham vs. Rafael dos Anjos added to UFC on FX 8
Resurgent lightweights Evan Dunham (14-3 MMA, 7-3 UFC) and Rafael dos Anjos (18-6 MMA, 7-4 UFC) are set to meet at UFC on FX 8.
The news was reported by the combat-sports website of Brazilian network Globo TV, though MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) was unable to reach UFC officials for confirmation on the bout's status.
UFC on FX 8 takes place May 18 at Arena Jaragua in Jaragua do Sul, Santa Catarina, Brazil. The event's main card airs live on FX following prelims on FUEL TV and Facebook.
Dunham recently took to MMAjunkie.com Radio to vent at an Internet writer who said he had no business fighting the Brazilian.
"I wanted to remind him that two of his losses are two guys I beat," he said. "I would love to go fight that kid and put the hurt him just so I could rub it in that other dude's face."
Tito Ortiz showed up backstage at UFC 157 and has a plan for 'Cyborg' Santos.
Tito Ortiz has a plan. It's detailed and forward-thinking and not terribly flexible, but still, it's a plan. He seems pretty sure that it's a good one. UFC President Dana White seems to feel differently, but what else is new?
"I made so many mistakes with my career," Ortiz told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) backstage at this past weekend's UFC 157 event in Anaheim, Calif. "I'm not going to make the same mistakes with my clients."
By clients, of course, he means Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos, the former Strikeforce women's 145-pound champion who Ortiz represents as part of his foray into the world of fighter management. And by mistakes, he means signing a contract where there's "no future," which is what he claimed the UFC offered his fighter recently. So he turned it down, he said. He opted to sign her to a three-fight deal in Invicta FC instead – a decision White could only shake his head at when quizzed about it at a fan Q&A a day earlier.
Broken hand cancels Daniel Straus' title fight with Pat Curran at Bellator 95
A long wait is about to get longer for Bellator's Season 6 featherweight tournament winner, Daniel Straus.
Straus (21-4 MMA, 7-1 BFC) broke his hand during a training session and has been forced to withdraw from a title fight against featherweight champion Pat Curran (18-4 MMA, 8-1 BFC) at Bellator 95, which takes place April 4 at Revel Resort & Casino in Atlantic City, N.J.
Multiple sources close to the event passed along the news to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). A replacement search is currently underway for Straus, who most recently appeared this past October in a non-tourney fight.
Signal to Noise: UFC 157's best and worst
UFC 157: Rousey vs. Carmouche was, generally speaking, an excellent event. We all bore witness to an historic moment with women making their way to the UFC, a thrilling preliminary card and much more. Not everything was perfect, though. We all were forced also had to sit through a dreadful co-main event, not all of the referee stoppages were as good as they could be, among other problems.
Let's separate the winners from the losers, the best from the worst and the signal from the noise at UFC 157: Rousey vs. Carmouche...
Jose Aldo earns lightweight title shot with win over Anthony Pettis
UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo (22-1 MMA, 4-0 UFC) is now one win away from a shot at the promotion's lightweight title.
MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) on Monday confirmed with UFC President Dana White that if Aldo is victorious in his August fight with Anthony Pettis (16-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC), he will move up to 155 pounds for a shot at the title in that division.
Belcher wants tattoo bet with Bisping
Alan Belcher promises that he'll get a tattoo of something that's close to Michael Bisping's heart if Bisping can take him out quickly at UFC 159. But will Bisping go for what The Talent wants him to do if it's Belcher that gets the quick finish?
