Former UFC Lightweight Champ Rafael dos Anjos Announces Move to Welterweight
His unanimous decision win over Anthony Pettis won him the title and he defended by spectacularly knocking out Donald Cerrone in 66 seconds in his first defense and it seemed at that juncture that the Brazilian might wind up being an all-time great. But a first-round stoppage loss to Eddie Alvarez lost him his throne and when Tony Ferguson defeated him via judges’ decision last November, his run as a top lightweight reached a resounding end.
Marlon Vera steps in to face Jimmie Rivera at UFC Fight Night 103
UFC Fight Night 103 is getting a new fight.
The UFC announced on Friday that Ecuadorian fighter Marlon Vera will step in for the injured Bryan Caraway to fight Jimmie Rivera on Jan. 15 in Phoenix. The fight will kick off the main card on FOX Sports 1.
Caraway was scheduled to face Rivera in what was to be a battle for contention in the bantamweight division, but Caraway was forced to withdraw from the bout with an undisclosed injury just 11 day’s beforehand.
Vera, 24, will look to make it back-to-back wins for the first time in the UFC. Having competed on The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America, Vera is 2-2 in the UFC and is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Ning Guangyou in November in Melbourne, Australia.
‘Jacare’ Souza added to UFC 208 against Tim Boetsch
Ronaldo Souza got a fight, but probably not one that will get him closer to his desired spot atop the middleweight division.
“Jacare” will take on Tim Boetsch at UFC 208 on Feb. 11 in Brooklyn, UFC officials told Newsday. Souza’s manager Gilberto Faria posted a mock Craigslist ad Thursday on Instagram, seeking a 185-pound opponent for his client.
Tito Ortiz on why he’s retiring: ‘My biggest enemy has been my body’
This isn’t the first time Tito Ortiz has announced his retirement. The former UFC light heavyweight champion called it a career after a 2012 loss to Forrest Griffin and was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame.
Then came an improbable run with Bellator, one in which he drew a game-changing television rating for a fight with Stephan Bonnar on Nov. 2014 which helped usher in the current era of MMA free agency.
But while the inevitable can be postponed, time catches up with everyone eventually. Ortiz’s Bellator 170 main event against Chael Sonnen comes two days before his 42nd birthday, and “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” affirmed that win, lose, or draw, he intends for the bout to be the last of his MMA career.
Mark Hunt felt like he had to accept Alistair Overeem fight or ‘let my family starve’
Mark Hunt was trying to fight the UFC for further protections in his contract. But he felt like he had no choice but accept a fight without those protections.
Hunt will face Alistair Overeem at UFC 209 on March 4 in Las Vegas, it was announced last month. Originally, Hunt said he would only take the fight if the UFC wrote new provisions in his contract about an opponent caught doping. But “The Super Samoan” told “Stuff” in his native New Zealand that he had to take the bout without them for financial reasons.
Marlon Moraes says he can beat anyone, including UFC champ Cody Garbrandt
Marlon Moraes successfully defended his World Series of Fighting bantamweight title on Dec. 31, and he’s once again a free agent.
The Brazilian talent, who signed a one-fight deal with WSOF earlier this year, knows what he wants after scoring a first-round stoppage victory over Josenaldo Silva in New York.
Less than 24 hours before Moraes’ 11th victory under the WSOF banner, the bantamweight title was on the line in the UFC Octagon. Dominick Cruz, who dominated the division for years, suffered his first defeat in almost a decade against Cody Garbrandt.
Moraes enjoyed Garbrandt’s performance, but thinks he has what it takes to beat any bantamweight in the world.
Khabib Nurmagomedov's manager offers ultimatum to Tony Ferguson
Khabib Nurmagomedov’s manager is apparently growing impatient with Tony Ferguson’s impasse with the UFC.
Former WSOF matchmaker and Dominance MMA chief Ali Abdelaziz gave an ultimatum to Ferguson today on Twitter.
“You have 6 days to make a deal with the UFC (and) if you don’t make a deal I’m going to find someone else to fight” read the message, since deleted.
Bryan Caraway out at next week's UFC Fight Night 103, Jimmie Rivera needs new opponent
Fast-rising bantamweight contender Jimmie Rivera is in need of a new opponent, and in quick fashion.
MMAjunkie today confirmed with UFC officials that Bryan Caraway is injured and has been forced to withdraw from next week’s UFC Fight Night 103 event. That leaves Rivera without an opponent for now, though a search is actively underway.
UFC Fight Night 103 takes place next Sunday at Talking Stick Resort in Phoenix.
Brock Lesnar suspended by USADA for one year in doping case
Brock Lesnar’s MMA future remains uncertain, but the results of his doping case no longer are.
The former UFC heavyweight champion was suspended one year by USADA for failing two drug tests in relation to UFC 200 in July, the UFC’s anti-doping partner announced Wednesday in a press release. Lesnar is eligible to return to the Octagon on July 15, 2017, one year after his provisional USADA suspension began.
‘Health problems’ force Mirko Cro Cop to retire (again): ‘This is definitely the end’
I know, I know, we’ve heard this before... and even before that. But this time he really means it.
Mirko Filipovic, 42, who rose to power under the PRIDE FC banner over a decade ago, recaptured some of that former glory by winning the RIZIN FF open-weight grand prix last weekend in Saitama, Japan.
That’s what we call leaving on a high note.
“That was definitely my last tournament. I have health problems and this is definitely the end of my career,” Cro Cop told Nova TV (via Croatia Week). “I know I have announced my retirement before, but this is definitely it.”
Filipovic (35-11-2) retires on the strength of a seven-fight winning streak.
Ryan Bader: 'UFC has a special place in my heart, but there are intriguing fights in Bellator'
Ryan Bader has yet to ink a new contract with Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) after he opted to fight out his existing deal rather than sign an extension last year.
A move that proved to be the right one for "Darth," knocking out Antonio Rogerio Nogueira last November to secure his second straight win, seven of eight overall. Whether or not that equates to big bucks for Bader, remains to be seen. One thing is certain, though, if his longtime employers don't pay him, he'll gladly go to a company that will.
Bellator MMA included, as he recent told Flo Combat.
Khabib Nurmagomedov offers to pay Tony Ferguson to fight him
Khabib Nurmagomedov is willing to put his own money on the line to make a fight with Tony Ferguson go from fantasy to reality.
The No. 1 ranked lightweight took to Twitter on Monday to offer up $200,000 paid directly to Ferguson so he would accept the proposed matchup between the two of them.
