BJJ Credentials in MMA
(onthemat.com)
But the Jiu Jitsu community in many ways is still a relatively small one and a close knit one. Through the grapevine among grapplers, there is a relatively honest and blunt assessment of skill among peers, and OntheMat has been at the forefront for over a decade now. So as a guideline to those who are introduced to these fighters through television, or for those of you who want to brush up on their knowledge, we’ve going through our archives and done some research to give you more of a grappler’s perspective on the “expert” status of many of the names you are now hearing about (unless you’ve been on OTM the whole time, in which case, many of these names you’ve heard about for years). We plan to make this a regular feature on OntheMat.com, and we will begin be looking over UFC 83 card, which in terms of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu credentials, competition record and if those BJJ skills have actually translated into success in the cage.

Cesar Gracie Interview
(graciefighter.com)
Cesar Gracie MMAYOU.com: Thank you Cesar for talking to us at MMAYOU.COM. MMAYOU.com: Would you like to rematch Frank Shamrock? If you did fight again, what would be your strategy? Cesar: I think every fighter would want to get another crack at a fight he lost. Get it to the ground and don't strike with a striker. MMAYOU.com: The Machado brothers were your BJJ teachers for a time. What influence did they have on your game?

Quarry Talks Starnes And The Rock-Hammer
(mmaweekly.com)
Nate "Rock" Quarry won a unanimous decision over Canadian fighter Kalib Starnes at UFC 83. He also won over a lot of fans for his performance and in-Octagon antics during what turned out to be one of the most bizarre fights in Ultimate Fighting Championship history. Following his bout with Rich Franklin at UFC 56, Quarry underwent back surgery to repair disc damage from a degenerative condition that resulted in having several vertebra fused together. Many thought his fighting career was over. Defying the odds, he returned nearly two years later at UFC Fight Night 11 with a knockout victory over Pete Sell. Following his successful comeback, Quarry requested a bout with Kalib Starnes. The bout was turned down by Starnes’ camp. “When I called Joe Silva at first to make my comeback in the UFC, I just thought (Starnes’) style would be perfect for mine and it would be a good warm-up fight for me," Quarry told MMAWeekly. "(Silva) contacted his camp and the response was, ‘No. We don't want that fight. He just lost. We just won, so he doesn't deserve to fight us.’ At that moment I just kind of made a mental note that some day I'm going to give you a beating if at all possible."

Head Of The Class: ASU Wrestlers Take On MMA
(mmaweekly.com)
Wrestlers have always had a special place in the world of mixed martial arts. One particular group of wrestlers from Arizona State University have made a mark lately, positioning themselves as the new breed of athletes competing in MMA. While Arizona State has always been a top school for collegiate wrestling, it has also produced many top MMA fighters including Dan Severn, Dan Henderson, and Don Frye. Now, a new group of grapplers from Arizona State has proven the team still knows how to produce great fighters. C.B. Dollaway, Ryan Bader, and Cain Velasquez were all a part of the Arizona State wrestling team. Recently, all three have made successful transitions into MMA. “Basically, when I came to Arizona State, it put me in a great position to be a great collegiate wrestler. I came in with Ryan Bader and Cain Velasquez, it was kind of like a 1-2-3 punch,” said Dollaway about his teammates. “So we all worked out together and my coach Aaron Simpson, who’s a two time All-American who was trying to make the Olympics. Just a bunch of great guys to workout with.” The work ethic displayed showed on the wrestling mat as all three were All-American wrestlers in their time at Arizona State and it’s that commitment that helped them transition to MMA as well.

George St. Pierre vs. Anderson Silva - Who is the Better Fighter?
(411mania.com)
Welcome back to the Double Leg Breakdown. It was another great UFC card last weekend (short of one miserable fight that I hope never to think about again; I'm looking at you Starnes). I was really happy to see Michael Bisping in good form, but man, did he look skinny! I thought the bar where I watched the fight ordered it in 16:9 format but projected it in 4:3 format. Nice to see that he cut the weight right with diet and not just cutting waterweight.

SANDMAN HOPES TO PUT EVANS TO SLEEP
(mmaweekly.com)
As James Irvin celebrated his eight-second win over Houston Alexander, while his highlight reel “superman” punch littered the ESPN Sportcenter Top 10 plays, little did he know that less than a month later he’d be asked to fill in for Chuck Liddell to face light heavyweight contender Rashad Evans. “Actually, I think I had a beer in my hands and I was still celebrating from knocking out Houston Alexander,” said Irvin in an interview with MMAWeekly Radio on Thursday. “I didn’t even see it coming, but I think as soon as they told me, I dropped the beer and decided I wanted to go train again.”... I personally like the way James Irvin is handling the situation. he seems humble yet confident. from this interview he is starting to grow on me a bit and i'll definitely be rooting for him to score the KO.

(sherdog.com)
FEG has announced that national university freestly wrestling champion Ian Murphy has been added to the DREAM 2 card as part of the Middleweight GP. He'll face Ronaldo Jacare, who was to have fought Frank Trigg but apparently visa issues and reconsidering participating after reaching a verbal agreement will keep Trigg off.

Purge and Merge
(bloodyelbow.com)

...Apparently [the UFC] is planning on purging the 185 and 205 divisions from the WEC. I suspect they will bring in a few guys from each division over to The UFC (Stann, Marshall, Filho, etc), and cut the rest off. Brian Stann has tremendous marketable potential if he's able to train full time, there's no way they're going to let him go...
is Zuffa going to do to WEC what it did to PRIDE and gut the venue while taking its stars? as an MMA fan, do you have a problem with this? is this a good thing for the UFC? for the MMA community?
