Coker: We're "Getting Very Close" With Fedor Negotiations
(mmajunkie.com)
Prior to Saturday's "Strikeforce: Henderson vs. Babalu II," a few industry insiders suggested officials might announce a contract extension with famed heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko during the Showtime broadcast. The announcement, of course, never came. But following the show, which took place at St. Louis' Scottrade Center, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker confirmed the organization has made some progress in the negotiations. Emelianenko, a former PRIDE champion who long held the title as the world's No. 1 heavyweight, was upset earlier this year by Fabricio Werdum. The submission defeat remains the only true and legitimate loss of his decade-long career and cost him a likely title shot with current Strikeforce champ Alistair Overeem. Emelianenko's M-1 representatives have discussed the possibility of a Werdum rematch – and/or future Overeem fight – and even considered a fight with Antonio Silva at one point. But Emelianenko first needs a new deal to replace his current contract, which has a single fight remaining on it. But the two sides have gotten no further than the negotiating table in recent months. But the sometimes-plodding talks in no way represent an Emelianenko disinterest in fighting again, according to Coker. "Fedor has never been the issue," he said. "But we don't talk to Fedor. We're talking to M-1, and it's an ongoing process."

Report: Bellator Season 4 to Air Live on FX
(sherdog.com)
Bellator Fighting Championships’ days of having televised events pre-empted by high school football games and air racing competitions may finally be over. After two seasons’ worth of sometimes-live, but often tape-delayed events on Fox Sports Net, the promotion is reportedly close to announcing a new, multi-year deal with Fox Entertainment Group which would see its fourth season aired live weekly on cable station FX. News of the deal was first reported Friday by MMAJunkie.com. The report also states that while Bellator’s live shows -- which have been held on Thursday nights for each of its first three seasons -- would be broadcast on FX, replays and highlight packages will likely continue to run on FSN, as well as the Fox-owned “extreme sports” channel Fuel TV. Asked to comment on the potential new deal, Bellator chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney issued the following statement to Sherdog.com:

Strikeforce: Henderson vs. Babalu weigh-in results: Main-card fighters on weight
(mmajunkie.com)
ST. LOUIS – MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) was on scene and reporting live from today's official "Strikeforce: Henderson vs. Babalu" fighter weigh-ins. Today's festivities, which were free and open to the public, took place at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, which also hosts Saturday's Showtime-televised event. Among those weighing in were headliners Dan Henderson and Renato "Babalu" Sobral, who concluded a main-card lineup that all successfully made weight for the show. The weigh-ins largely went off without a hitch. Preliminary-card competitors Fernando Bettega and Wayne Phillips had an intense staredown and engaged in some trash talk, but that was it in the way of fireworks. Main-card fighter Paul Daley received some cat calls due to his post-fight suckerpunch of Josh Koscheck earlier this year, but he ignored them and had a friendly staredown with opponent Scott Smith.

Jussier da Silva vs. Ian McCall lined up for Tachi Palace Fights 8
(mmajunkie.com)
Fresh off a unanimous decision victory over WEC vet Danny Martinez at Tachi Palace Fights 7, No. 1 ranked flyweight Jussier da Silva (9-0 MMA, 1-0 TPF) will grace the promotion's next event in a bout with another WEC vet. MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has learned that Silva is expected to meet Ian McCall (8-2 MMA, 0-0 TPF) at Tachi Palace Fights 8, which takes place in February at the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino in Lemoore, Calif. Verbal agreements are in place for the fight, and contracts are expected to be finalized shortly. Silva on Thursday made his highly anticipated debut in the U.S., though Martinez did not make it easy on him. The WEC vet fended off multiple submission attempts and even staged a rally in the third round with a series of strikes. But in the end, the Brazilian's strong grappling gave him the edge on judges' scorecards. Silva remains unbeaten in the 125-pound division. In July 2009, he seized the top spot on rankings with a decision victory over Shooto champion Shinichi Kojima in a non-title bout for the Japanese promotion.

Looking Back at UFC 123, Matt Hughes Contemplating Retirement
(mmaweekly.com)
It’s difficult to evaluate what went wrong in a fight when you get knocked out in 21 seconds. It’s even more difficult, mere minutes later, to evaluate a career that has spanned more than 50 fights, and determine where that career is headed. But that’s exactly where UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes found himself after his fight with B.J. Penn at UFC 123 in Detroit. In an increasingly Internet-centric society that craves up-to-the-second information, Hughes didn’t have immediate answers. “I don’t know what the plan is now. I had a perfect training camp coming into this. This is one of those fights I would have paid my purse to Dana White to put this fight together,” Hughes told interviewer Joe Rogan in the Octagon after the fight. Two weeks later, Hughes has the advantage of hindsight looking back on the fight, a rubber match that put the Hawaiian up 2-1 in their trilogy. “A lot of people have been asking about the fight and how I am doing. Of course, the fight didn’t go like I had planned it,” Hughes wrote in a blog post on Matt-Hughes.com. “He hit me with a hard right hand that I never saw coming. It’s funny how styles make fights and I’m not at all like Frankie Edgar. So it just kind of stinks that B.J. came off two losses (both to Edgar) and then ended up beating me in less than 30 seconds.”

California to test new points system
(sports.espn.go.com)
December 2, 2010 By Josh Gross ESPN.com California will experiment with a new points system for amateur mixed martial arts bouts beginning in 2011, a move that could lead to significant changes in judging at the professional level. The test to determine whether the 10-point must scoring system is best suited for dynamic MMA bouts will be conducted by the California Amateur Mixed Martial Arts Organization in conjunction with the California State Athletic Commission. The new system will be used in amateur bouts in California during the 2011 calendar year, allowing the state to serve as a Petri dish without risking the livelihood of professional mixed martial artists. It figures to be tested in more than 100 bouts. Fights will be scored under both standards, said Jeremy Lappen, CEO of CAMO, with the intent of delivering "comparative data" that regulators can use to determine whether or not the trial system -- Mixed Martial Arts Specific Scoring (MMAS) -- should eventually apply to the pros.

Sonnen's Suspension Reduced To 6 Months
(mmajunkie.com)
The California State Athletic Commission today approve a reduction of UFC middleweight Chael Sonnen's UFC 117 drug suspension from a year to six months. His $2,500 fine remains unchanged. Sonnen landed a date with the influential commission after a failed bid to take UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva's title during an Aug. 7 event in Oakland. Sonnen dominated the champ for four rounds but succumbed to a triangle-choke submission midway through the fifth and deciding round. Although promised an immediate rematch, Sonnen instead was put on the sidelines when CSAC executive director George Dodd confirmed the challenger had tested positive for elevated testosterone levels. (His testosterone-to-epitestosterone ratio tested at 16.9, which well exceeded the CSAC's 4.0 cutoff, according to recently released documents.) Sonnen has kept quiet since news of the failed test, but he and a team lead by lawyers Howard Jacobs and Steven Thompson today broke their silence. Sonnen said he's undergone testosterone-replacement therapy since 2008 as treatment for hypergonadism, a condition in which there is hyperfunction of the gonads. Jacobs argued that Sonnen passed a CSAC test in October 2009 (when he defeated Yushin Okami at UFC 104) and rebutted the commission's claim that officials hadn't been notified prior to UFC 117 of the therapy. Sonnen, though, said he received verbal confirmation. Dodd confirmed Sonnen had notified him of the therapy but said he hadn't taken the proper steps at UFC 117. With some apparent miscommunication, CSAC officials voted 3-1 (after an initial 2-2 deadlock) to reduce his suspension. He's now eligible to return to competition on March 2 of the coming year.

TUF 12 Finale's Branch not impressed with Attonito's striking pedigree
(mmajunkie.com)
Once-beaten UFC middleweight David Branch (7-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) knows a thing or two about submissions. The Renzo Gracie Jiu-Jitsu product owns three of his career wins via tapout and boasts a black belt from one of the most respected instructors in all of the sport. But don't try to pigeon-hole Branch into the role of a grappling-first fighter. The 28-year-old said at this weekend's The Ultimate Fighter 12 Finale, he's more than willing to throw hands.

The Ultimate Fighter 12 takes place at The Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, and the night's main card airs on Spike TV.
