Couture's issue is money, not respect
Circle Oct. 25, 2007 on your calendar, for it will go down in history as the date when the sport of mixed martial arts hit the mainstream.
It was the date that the sport's highest-profile star held a news conference in a ring at the gym he owns to speak about his problems with its most well-known promoter.
But though Randy Couture, the UFC's erstwhile heavyweight champion, insisted repeatedly that his resignation on Oct. 11 had nothing to do with money, he spent the better part of the news conference Thursday talking about that very topic.

Randy Coutures Side Of The Story
LAS VEGAS – Randy Couture went before the media to tell his side of the story Thursday at Xtreme Couture Mixed Martial Arts, two weeks to the day after his resignation from the UFC sent shockwaves across the combat sports world.
Couture, the only man in UFC history to win championships in two separate weight classes, addressed the status of his current contract with Zuffa LLC, parent company of the Las Vegas-based promotion. The 44-year-old signed a four-fight contract – which covered a term of 18 months – prior to his victory over UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia at UFC 68 in March.
“I wasn’t happy with that contract then,” Couture said. “I asked for a signing bonus. I knew a lot of other athletes were getting signing bonuses. I was told, ‘No, we can’t give you a signing bonus.’ But it really didn’t matter. What I ultimately wanted to do was fight, so I accepted the contract.”
UFC on Spike TV contract extension, new show details
The UFC secured its television future through the end of the decade today, as it announced a contract extension with Spike TV during a media teleconference. Financial terms of the deal, which runs through 2011, were not disclosed.
The contract includes provisions for seasons nine through 12 of “The Ultimate Fighter” reality series, which has been credited with launching the UFC and mixed martial arts into mainstream prominence. A dozen UFC Fight Nights – four per year – are also part of the agreement, along with 39 one-hour episodes of UFC Unleashed.
Perhaps the most significant news to come out of the extension was the announced creation of a new, live weekly fight series. The still unnamed series, details for which will be announced at a later date, will run for two seasons on Spike TV.
