The case for legalization: quantifying economic windfalls
While I may have argued for a a fundamental shift in MMA’s approach to seeking legalization, I’m not naive enough to believe that the economics of the sport do not have a role in the legalization process.
The fact of the matter is it’s simply not enough to preach the virtues of MMA as a sport and expound its comparable safety record to all the public naysayers and fence-sitters. It’s now time to broach the topic of economic windfalls - MMA’s veritable ace in the hole.

One-Armed MMA Fighter Nick Newell Brings Big Dreams to Pro Debut
Like any mixed martial artist just beginning his pro career, Nick Newell has big dreams.
He wants to go as far as his mind can imagine, win a few belts, make some nice paydays, fight in a big promotion like DREAM, Strikeforce, even the UFC.
But Newell won't only have to overcome opponents to get there; he'll have to overcome a physical disability. The 23-year-old lightweight fighter, who will be making his pro debut this Saturday at a Cage Fighting Xtreme show in Plymouth, Mass., was born without a left hand. His arm ends just below the elbow.
Michael Schiavello on Kid Yamamoto's Return to K-1 Next Month
Japanese MMA superstar Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto, fresh off a loss to Joe Warren at Dream 9, has announced that he'll get back into the ring on July 13. But instead of fighting MMA, Yamamoto has taken a K-1 MAX kickboxing fight against South Korea's Jae hee Cheon. That represents an interesting challenge to Yamamoto, because the last time he fought in K-1, he got knocked cold by Mike Zambidis, as you can see in the video above. For thoughts on Yamamoto fighting in K-1, I turned to K-1 announcer Michael Schiavello, whose comments are below.
Villasenor's 'Respect Tour '09' Begins
A year ago, Joey Villasenor was feeling really good about his MMA career. He had just defeated Phil Baroni on the first-ever MMA event broadcast on network television and was primed to make a run at the EliteXC middleweight title. He was then three weeks away from receiving that shot and an opportunity to avenge an October 2006 loss to Robbie Lawler, until the organization suddenly ceased operations and cancelled the event in November.
Diego Sanchez Tells Clay Guida: "It's On Homie" at TUF 9 Finale and Demands Title Shot
Steve Cofield interviews Diego Sanchez and gets him wound up about Clay Guida's recent critique of his striking style:
"Wanna talk some trash? Now it's on homie. Clay, I know you're going to try and throw your little 1-2 combo to a takedown. I'll be waiting for that, also a big left knee is gonna be waiting for that. The same thing Roger (Huerta) did to you, except my knee is going to be harder, more accurate and timed perfect."
Vitor Belfort vs. Jorge Santiago completes "Affliction: Triology" pay-per-view main card
Affliction Entertainment today officially announced a previously rumored bout between Vitor Belfort (18-8) and Jorge Santiago (21-7) that completes the pay-per-view main card for "Affliction: Trilogy."
The event takes place Aug. 1 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.
The show features a five-round main event between WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko and Josh Barnett, which headlines the pay-per-view main card. The night's preliminary card airs on HDNet.
Gina Carano, Cris Cyborg Don't Want to Say What They Weigh
Gina Carano and Cristiane Santos (better known as Cris Cyborg) will step into the cage in the main event of the August 15 Strikeforce show in what is being billed as the biggest fight in the history of women's MMA. But there's a looming question over the fight: Can Carano and Cyborg make weight? And on a call Thursday to promote the bout, neither Carano nor Cyborg was in the mood to discuss it.
Bisping and Henderson Figure Their Fight Will Sell Itself
Last night's season finale of The Ultimate Fighter ended with each coach telling us exactly what he thinks of the other guy; basically, Dan Henderson thinks Michael Bisping's a douchebag, and Bisping thinks Henderson's time has passed. And maybe they're both right. But with three weeks left until they face each other at UFC 100, tensions aren't exactly building. Here's a highlight from a media conference call held earlier today:
Paul Kelly wants Junie Browning next
Paul Kelly wants TUF8 delinquent Junie Browning as his next opponent - and says he will get one of the UFC's bonus awards if they make that fight happen.
“I hope my next match-up is Junie Browning. Its a better match-up for me, he would stand there and fight me, it would be an exciting fight. And he was talking **** about me a bit ago,” Kelly told Fighters Only today.
Late Changes Made To Tomorrow's SF/ShoMMA Event
Strikeforce has announced 2 late changes to tomorrow's ShoMMA event. Cedric Marks is now off and Justin Davis is in against Dennis Hallman, while Conor Heun vs. Jorge Gurgel is now a catch weight fight at 160. The reason Marks is off is a medical suspension stemming from apparently fighting just last weekend.
The Bellator Underdogs Speak: Toby Imada and Jared Hess Talk About Eddie Alvarez and Hector Lombard
For those of us who have jobs and families and can't spend ALL our time obsessing about MMA, the Bellator events have been worth keeping an eye on for two reasons. First there's the stream of highlight reel finishes coming out of the tournaments. Secondly, there are a few fighters who had built reputations before getting into the Bellator shark tank.
Some of those guys, notably touted featherweight Wilson Reis and Jorge Masvidal have already been the victims of upset losses.
Ben Askren Not Buying Into Own Hype
There was a considerable amount of buzz surrounding Ben Askren's MMA debut in February. The two-time NCAA wrestling champion, 2008 US Olympian and two-time winner of the Dan Hodge Trophy, which is the wrestling equivalent of the Heisman, is now 2-0 in his MMA career, defeating his first opponent via TKO and the second via arm-triangle choke. Neither fight has lasted longer than 90 seconds.
Shayna Baszler: Kaufman Predictable Like a 'Video Game Character Boss'
It's been almost a year since we've seen Shayna Baszler compete in an MMA cage. Following her last fight, a highly-visible loss to Cristiane Santos on CBS in July 2008, the 28-year-old was forced to sit on the sidelines while Pro Elite figured out what they were going to do with their contracts. Once Strikeforce purchased most of the significant ones in February, it was only a matter of time before Baszler got back to work and resumed her promising career.
