Joe Stevenson - All Bets Are Off
(mmamania.com)
Joe “Daddy” Stevenson is indeed a family man. But that never stopped him from whooping up on people inside the cage. At just 26 years old, the father of four boys has nearly 40 professional fights to his credit. He’s 5-2 in the UFC and is looking to rebound from a recent title bout loss to BJ Penn. When Joe steps into the cage this Saturday night at UFC 86: “Jackson vs. Griffin” in front of 12,000 screaming fans and millions more tuning in around the world, his eldest son, Joey, will be in attendance, watching his dad fight for the first time ever.

Josh Barnett revisits old rival Pedro Rizzo
(mmajunkie.com)
UFC, PRIDE and K-1 veteran Josh Barnett (22-5) is perhaps one of the least-known commodities in the upper echelon of the heavyweight division to American fans. But if Affliction Vice President Tom Atencio has his way, "The Babyface Assassin" will soon be a household name. The first roadblock on that journey is the first man ever to beat Barnett, the heavy-handed Pedro Rizzo (16-7). Already a legend in Japan, Barnett and Atencio discussed Barnett's upcoming bout with longtime-veteran Rizzo at "Affliction: Banned" today on a media conference call. "One of my goals is to make Josh famous here (in America), as well," Atencio said. "I think that he deserves the recognition." For his part, the one-time UFC heavyweight champion downplayed the importance of recognition in his homeland. "I didn’t do this to become famous," Barnett said. "I did it because I wanted to be the baddest guy on the planet." Barnett has long been considered among the most talented heavyweights in the world. At just 24, the Washington native defeated MMA legend Randy Couture to become the UFC's heavyweight champion in 2002. A highly controversial steroid scandal followed, and Barnett left the UFC to compete in Japan.

UFC 86: Quniton Jackson ready to get nasty
(mmaweekly.com)
The remaining question is whether or not Silva can transfer the kryptonite from his hands to Griffin’s. Jackson doesn’t seem to think so. “I’m telling you, Forrest can train with the Pope, it ain’t going to help him. Wanderlei ain’t going to get in there and fight for him,” Jackson stated to MMAWeekly.com. “Forrest got to fight me for himself. I don’t care who he goes and trains with. He can go train with Sakuraba. He can go train with Marvin Eastman. He can go train with Shogun. He can train with anybody; they ain’t going to fight for him.” As for his own preparations, once again training in Big Bear, Calif., Jackson has utilized many different sources to train for Griffin. Calling on his connections from his stint as Griffin’s rival coach on The Ultimate Fighter, Jackson said that he trained with Season 7 competitors Mike Dolce, Jeremy May, and Gerald Harris, but due to how he thinks Griffin will fight him, he called on a lot more training partners than them.

Thiago Alves VS Diego Sanchez likely at UFC 89
(mmaweekly.com)
While the welterweight division looks towards a championship match in August between current titleholder Georges St. Pierre and Jon Fitch, the weight class will continue to build towards a new top contender as MMAWeekly.com has learned that American Top Team knockout artist Thiago “Pitbull” Alves is slated to return on Oct. 19 to face former “Ultimate Fighter” winner Diego Sanchez. The bout was confirmed to MMAWeekly.com by sources close to the fight. There is currently a verbal agreement with actual bout agreements for the contest expected to be signed in the next few days. Showing a true dedication to making his way to the top of the welterweight division, Alves has never been shy about facing top competition in the division. Most recently, he finished former Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight kingpin Matt Hughes by TKO in the second round of their main event match-up in England at UFC 85. Before that fight, Alves became the first fighter ever to knockout Karo Parisyan, thus solidifying himself as one of the most dangerous fighters at 170 pounds.

"Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Thomson" official salaries: headliners share $85,000
(mmajunkie.com)
Josh Thomson upset Gilbert Melendez for the Strikeforce world lightweight title at this past Friday's "Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Thomson" event, but Thomson couldn't edge the former title-holder when it came to his payday. Thomson earned a reported base salary of $35,000 ($15,000 of which was a win bonus) for the event; Melendez earned an event-high $50,000. MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) today acquired the list of salaries from Bill Douglas of the California State Athletic Commission.

Urijah Faber vs Mike Brown WEC 36 fight possible on September 10
(mmamania.com)
After his career-defining win over Jens Pulver, Urijah Faber (21-1) will likely return to the cage to defend his WEC featherweight title against Mike Brown at WEC 36 on September 10, according to MMAWeekly.com. “The California Kid” outstruck and outwrestled “Lil Evil” for five rounds at WEC 34 last month en route to a unanimous decision victory over the former UFC champion. He was clearly the faster fighter and had Pulver hurt in the second round, demonstrating that his striking prowess has caught up with his superb wrestling pedigree.

Fighter Salaries: Minimum Fighter Payouts
(mmapayout.com)
The first problem to be addressed is that of the minimum payouts for UFC fighters. I believe the lowest payout figures to be released this year were a few $3000 show/win contracts like the one given to Goran Reljic at UFC 84. Many have been quick to criticize the UFC for these payouts as they question a fighter's ability to make ends meet on such low income. Following yesterday's introduction, the interests of both parties are fairly obvious. A major interest of the fighters is to be able to provide for themselves and their families. And from a business perspective, it's probably within the UFC's interest to provide top-notch fights while also not having to pay anything more than it has to. This article is a MUST READ imo. Very insightful piece.

Dana White Makes The Case For Jesse Taylor
(cagepotato.com)
The UFC’s decision to include the newly-mature Jesse Taylor on their July 19 Fight Night has taken some heat lately. That’s because taking the moral high ground only works if you stick to it even when you desperately need to throw together a show designed to screw with your competitors. But Dana White is doing his best to make the decision to bring Taylor back into the UFC sound like a reasonable one. He’s also trying to battle the perception that the UFC encouraged the fighters to destroy the house and generally act the fool for the cameras.

Nate Marquardt Pulls The Old ‘Don’t Be Scared, Homey’ on Thales Leites
(cagepotato.com)
Here’s an interesting trend in MMA: a guy beats you in a fight through either a decision or somewhat questionable stoppage. You immediately demand a rematch, but he’d rather not do that because he wants to move on with his career and continue climbing the ladder in the division. So you do what any rational person would do. You accuse him of being scared to fight you again.

Brock Lesnar Talks About Safety in MMA
(mndaily.com)
"Just like football, basketball or hockey, the risk of getting injured in competition is there. But everybody that gets in the octagon is very well-trained. Also, in this sport, if I feel like my arm's going to get snapped, I can tap out before I get injured. In other sports, I don't have that option. If a linebacker's coming across and I'm carrying the ball, I don't have the opportunity to stop. I've been hurt more as a pro wrestler and as an amateur wrestler than I have in this. I was hurt more as a pro wrestler than anything else, because I worked 300 nights a year and they didn't care if I was hurt or not."
