Daniel Cormier-Derrick Lewis official; Valentina Shevchenko moved back to UFC 231

The UFC has booked a heavyweight title fight between champion Daniel Cormier and Derrick Lewis to headline its UFC 230 pay-per-view event on Nov. 3 in New York. UFC president Dana White broke the news to ESPN on Tuesday, and Cormier confirmed it to ESPN. The heavyweight fight will take place on the UFC's annual card at Madison Square Garden. With a new main event in place, Valentina Shevchenko will be moved back to her original fight against Joanna Jedrzejczyk for the vacant women's flyweight title at UFC 231 on Dec. 8 in Toronto, according to White.

How stoked were you for the Nate Diaz vs. Dustin Poirier fight? Now prepare to be completely bummed. Poirier (24-5 MMA, 16-4 UFC) has suffered an injury and is out of his UFC 230 lightweight fight against Diaz (19-11 MMA, 14-9 UFC). Poirier’s manager confirmed the news to MMAjunkie on Tuesday night following an initial report from ESPN.com. As a results, Diaz “also will not fight on the card,” UFC President Dana White told the Los Angeles Times. When asked by ESPN.com’s Ariel Helwani what would happen in the wake of Poirier’s withdrawal, Diaz responded: “I’ll just fight Khabib (Nurmagomedov) when he’s ready.”

On Tuesday, the fight promotion announced several key match-ups for the event that includes two former champions and a fan favorite. Holloway vs Ortega to headline in Toronto

It will be a championship doubleheader in Toronto on December 8, as UFC President Dana White announced that Max Holloway will defend his featherweight world title against Brian Ortega in the main event of UFC 231 at Scotiabank Arena. This five-round battle, which airs live on Pay-Per-View, joins the previously announced clash for the vacant UFC women's flyweight title between Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Valentina Shevchenko. In the headliner, undisputed featherweight champion Holloway will attempt to follow up a pair of victories over Brazilian superstar Jose Aldo with another signature win as he defends his title against unbeaten phenom Ortega. Ortega earned his shot at the crown with finishes of Frankie Edgar and Cub Swanson, and now he's got his sights set on Holloway as the two finally meet after their original bout in July was postponed.

McDonald is fresh off a 58-second knockout of former Bellator MMA champion Eduardo Dantas in July, but was forced to undergo his fifth hand surgery in the last five years following the bout. A former UFC title challenger, McDonald said he wrestled with the idea of retirement even prior to his latest injury, and is confident he can now move on from professional fighting.

Valentina Shevchenko and Joanna Jedrzejczyk will do battle for the vacant UFC women’s flyweight title at UFC 231 in Toronto. UFC officials announced the fight on Thursday night. For Shevchenko (15-3), a multiple-time Muay Thai champion, this will be her second opportunity to claim the UFC’s 125-pound title. She was initially scheduled to challenge former champion Nicco Montaño for her belt in the co-main event of UFC 228 earlier this month. However, Montaño was forced out of the bout the day before their title fight. As a result, Shevchenko was pulled from the card entirely while Montaño was stripped of her title.

Just six days before the show, UFC Fight Night 137 has had another change to its main event. Jimi Manuwa (17-4 MMA, 6-4 UFC) is out of the light heavyweight headliner against Thiago “Marreta” Santos (18-6 MMA, 10-5 UFC) in Brazil. But stepping in on short notice for Manuwa will be Eryk Anders (11-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC), multiple people with knowledge of the new booking today told MMAjunkie. UFC officials have not yet made a formal announcement of the change for the card, which takes place Saturday at Ibirapuera Gymnasium in Sao Paulo. The main card airs on FS1 following prelims on FS2 and UFC Fight Pass.

Today’s UFC Fight Night 136 event drew an announced attendance of 22,603 fans for a live gate of $1.84 million. The attendance number in Moscow, according to UFC officials was the fifth-largest crowd in the promotion’s history and the largest MMA event ever in Russia. It was the UFC’s debut in Russia. UFC officials announced the figures following the event, which MMAjunkie attended.

Michael Chiesa moving up to welterweight, hopes for fight with Carlos Condit at UFC 232

After a failed attempted on the scales during his last time out at UFC 226, The Ultimate Fighter season 15 winner Michael Chiesa is changing divisions. Although he immediately stated after missing the lightweight mark for his last fight, Chiesa is actually going through with his plan to move up to 170-pounds as was confirmed to ESPN. For his ideal UFC welterweight debut, Chiesa hopes to get onto UFC 232 on December 29 where he would like to face the former UFC interim and WEC welterweight champion Carlos Condit. The fight has apparently been discussed, however, Condit’s team doesn’t have any interest in the matchup despite wanting to return around the same time as Chiesa.

Aleksei Oleinik, Jan Blachowicz, Magomed Ankalaev and Petr Yan each earned $50,000 bonuses for their performances at today’s UFC Fight Night 136 event. Oleinik, Blachowicz and Ankalaeveach each won “Performance of the Night” honors. Yan earned the “Fight of the Night” for his win over Jin Soo Son, but Son was ineligible for the bonus because he missed weight. UFC officials announced the winners following the event, which MMAjunkie attended.
