Guillard Opens Up on Rehab, Diaz Prep
Melvin Guillard flew solo during Monday’s teleconference call for UFC Fight Night 19, which airs live Wednesday on Spike TV on 8 p.m. EST/PST.
Guillard was suspended by the NSAC for eight months in 2007 after testing positive for cocaine, then weathered a six-month rehab stint in Texas -- he said for violating the travel terms on his probation.
Maturity and focus were the main talking points for the 26-year-old fighter known in the past for his brash attitude as much as for his speed and agility in the cage.
UFC PPV Buyrates Increasing, Up 60% YOY
The following data represent estimates of the UFC buyrate figures over the first six months of both 2008 and 2009:
The UFC is up an estimated 62% on year-over-year PPV revenue from 2008 to 2009. It also out-performed each of its monthly totals from 2008 to 2009.
Perhaps even more telling, however, is the year-to-date PPV figure of 5.7 million – it’s just 500,000 short of last year’s record-breaking 6.2 million buys.
All this is quite impressive for a sports organization operating in what most have predicted to be the deepest part of the current recession; a recession so bad that even the economy-proof sports market has declined as ticket sales have slumped, television advertising revenue has decreased across the board, and salary caps throughout the major leagues look at the possibility of actually taking a step backward.
What has led the UFC to this point? Some combination of the following factors:
Municipal AC in Canada suspends MMA for six months
Local mixed martial arts fans will have to travel further to watch live bouts.
The Moncton Boxing and Wrestling Commission has ruled there will be no mixed martial arts cards in Moncton for the next six months. There have been seven MMA events here in the past three years and the sport has enjoyed a growing fan base locally.
Tamdan McCrory: Whats next for the Barn Cat?
With a record of 3-3 in the UFC, it came as a surprise when Tamdan McCrory was released following his loss at UFC 101. It was first reported that he and Thales Leites, among others, were cut. Reports then came in that Dana White recalled the release of McCrory and Leites; only to retract his previous decision and approve the release.
Dana White on John McCarthy
“It’s not that I disike John McCarthy, I’m not anti John McCarthy at all. I think John McCarthy mde a decision in his career, he decided to not ref anymore. He wanted to move on. If you’re in the ref business to try and get rich … people aren’t in it to be rich, they’re in it because they’re passionate about the sport. I’ve been very lucky to meet some amazing people in my career like Mitch Halpern, the best boxing ref in the sport and he died 10 years ago and being around this guy this guy was passionate about the sport he loved the sport and it was never about the money it was about being a professional referee. And that’s what it’s about.”
Bas Boon has harsh words for new StrikeForce arrangement
Overeem's management Golden Glory considers breaking with Strikeforce now that m-1 has entered into a co-promotion with the event. As this happened after Overeem signed a new contract with strikeforce in may, the management sees good reason to break open the contract with strikeforce. In the words of Golden Glory manager Bas Boon:
"It hasn't escaped my notice that we are dealing with a bunch of crooks who wish to brand their name onto someone who has managed to build up a successful organization on his own with a good network deal"
"Our deal with strikeforce was made before this bunch of robbers came along, but now we were planning on asking our money in advance. In fact, I see this as the ideal opportunity to say no to the contract that was signed earlier, we don't want to fight on any M-mini Cons & co promotions."

Nate Quarry Ready for War Against Tim Credeur
In our first look at the UFC Fight Night 19 main card, middleweights Nate Quarry (11-3) and Tim Credeur (12-2) square off in what could be an absolute war on the feet that may produce Fight of the Night honors if neither combatant can finish each other. Quarry is currently 6-2 in the UFC with a loss to Rich Franklin in a middleweight title fight at UFC 56 and a loss to standout grappler Demian Maia at UFC 91. Quarry's most recent win came at UFC 97 over Jason MacDonald in which he finished the veteran inside the first round via TKO by elbows. Credeur has impressively went 3-0 in the promotion following a stint on The Ultimate Fighter, but he tested positive for Adderall before his bout with Cale Yarborough at the TUF Season 7 Finale. He managed to defeat Yarborough at UFN 14 while defeating both Nick Catone and Nate Loughran in his next two fights.
Marcus Jones: UFC Tougher Than NFL
When the 10th season of The Ultimate Fighter debuts Wednesday night on Spike, most of the eyes will be on Kimbo Slice, the street fighter turned YouTube star who is trying to make it into the UFC. But Kimbo is far from the most accomplished athlete on the upcoming season.
Kimbo Slice Talks 'TUF 10,' Mike Tyson Dream Fight and Potential Boxing Career
It's safe to say that Kimbo Slice will never be remembered as one of the greatest MMA fighters of all-time, but few can argue with the incredible impact he has had on the sport in less than two years. Eleven months after his shocking loss to Seth Petruzelli, the former street fighter turned professional fighter will officially begin the next chapter of his controversial career this Wednesday on Spike, as he will be one of 16 heavyweights featured on the tenth season of The Ultimate Fighter.
Lyle Beerbohm Improves to 13-0
Lyle Beerbohm needed less than a minute and a half to defeat Josh Martin on Saturday night in an Arena Rumble MMA show, running his professional record to 13-0 and showing that Beerbohm is a talented, well-rounded martial artist who should be fighting in big promotions on TV, not in small shows on YouTube.
Daniel Cormier vs. Gary Frazier completes Strikeforce's "Challenger Series" card for Sept. 25
The official addition of a heavyweight bout between former Olympic wrestler Daniel Cormier (0-0) and native Oklahoman Gary Frazier (0-0) completes the lineup for "Strikeforce Challengers: Kennedy vs. Cummings" on Sept. 25 in Bixby, Okla.
AOL FanHouse was the first to report the bout between the two debuting professionals, and Strikeforce Director of Communications Mike Afromowitz has since confirmed with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that the contest has been officially added to the event.
While Nover's back may be against the wall, Stout coming out swinging at UFN 19
UFC lightweight Phillipe Nover (5-2-1 MMA, 0-2 UFC) is in a delicate position heading into Wednesday's "UFC Fight Night 19: Diaz vs. Guillard" in Oklahoma City.
Despite the hype surrounding "The Ultimate Fighter 8" cast member after UFC president Dana White called him "the next Anderson Silva," Nover could be served his walking papers if Sam Stout (14-5-1 MMA, 3-4 UFC) can hand the 25-year-old his third-straight loss.
Bas Rutten responds to Kimbo
With the premier of The Ultimate Fighter 10 season coming this week, all eyes have been on Kimbo Slice. The internet sensation turned mixed martial artist will try his luck in the UFC reality series after a notorious stint with EliteXC.
Look Out, Here Comes Jay Silva
Forget the prospect of dealing with CB Dollaway on Wednesday night in Oklahoma City. Jay Silva’s got bigger troubles – literally – as he may have to face heavyweight contender Cheick Kongo if he doesn’t perform up to his training partner’s expectations this week.
“He (Kongo) don’t leave me alone,” laughed Silva. “He calls me every five minutes. ‘Did you run?’ ‘How much did you run?’ ‘You’d better put your hands up.’ ‘If you lose, I’m gonna kick your ass.’”
BELFORT STARTS HIS UFC TRILOGY WITH FRANKLIN
The third time is a charm. At least, that’s what Vitor Belfort is hoping when he steps into the Octagon on Saturday night across from Rich Franklin.
UFC 103 in Dallas marks the third time the Brazilian fighter has made a run in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
Nate "The Rock" Quarry is Left 4 Dead
PDG: Ok we need to talk about some video gaming. Have you had any down time after your training to play any games?
Nate Quarry: Oh yeah, I was actually able to play the UFC Undisputed 2009 game for the first time a couple of weeks ago. I got a chance to be a guest online and play some of the mixed martial arts fans that were online. It was a great time! The game I am looking forward to the most though is Left 4 Dead 2. The creators of the game did a photo shoot with me and I am going to be one of the Zombies that you fight in the game. I'm really excited to be involved in the project.
