On Fedor and the MMA Hardcore Community
I don’t know what happened. One day things were as per normal in the internet MMA community, the next thing people have gone certified insane. Maybe the blame should go to Josh Barnett for starting off this chain reaction that has led to Fedor Emelianenko being (unjustly) the most vilified MMA star this side of Gilbert Yvel. Things have moved quickly and Barnett has become merely an afterthought in the UFC/M-1 mamushka. Hardcore, computer friendly MMA fans are constantly reminded how we make up a small portion of the larger MMA network. While that may be true, we consider ourselves educated and often superior to the casual rubes. We turn our collective noses up at the notion that many so called MMA fans are actually UFC fans. No doubt they are the ones calling it “Ultimate Fighting” as well. The nerve.

Mighty Mouse: Miguel Torres WEC 42 interview exclusive with MMAmania.com
If you walk past the unassuming 5’10,” 135-pound Miguel Torres on the street you would never know he is one of the best mixed martial arts fighters in the world. Just watch him fight in the cage and you’ll quickly learn that he is as dangerous as they come. He’s a technical master who overwhelms his opponents with a rare combination of power, speed, and skill. Torres is currently sporting an impressive record (37–1) after coming off a five round unanimous decision victory over Takeya Mizugaki at WEC 40 back in April 2009.

The Strikeforce/DREAM Alliance Could Bring Crossover Battles We Crave
Scott Coker mentioned in the TapouT radio show yesterday that there will be a press conference in Japan regarding a new alliance with DREAM that could potentially bring a large amount of overseas fighters into the mix with Strikeforce's roster of talent. This has been a bit overlooked in all the Strikeforce discussions, but it matters due to the potential for booking the crossover battles between Japanese and North American fighters that many fans have craved for quite some time. Not only are there bouts that can happen that are relevant within today's ranks, but even matches of MMA legends that could potentially be made between the two promotions. Think about some of these bouts: Frank Shamrock vs. Kazushi Sakuraba, Nick Diaz vs. Marius Zaromskis, Josh Thomson vs. Joachim Hansen/Shinya Aoki/Ribeiro/Kikuno... the list goes on.

Although Fedor Emelianenko has been signed to a three-fight, one-year deal, Strikeforce officials will still permit the heavyweight fighter to compete overseas, including in Japan. Strikeforce executive Mike Afromowitz confirmed with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that Emelianenko (30-1), who signed with Strikeforce on Monday, will be permitted to fight outside the organization while under contract.

NY Times profile: Carano a very secluded person
LAS VEGAS — Gina Carano lives on a cul-de-sac where all the houses look the same. For companionship, she puts up two pit bulls and a convicted felon. She stays out of nightclubs, maintains few friendships and drives a foul-smelling Impala. She never finished college. She has never heard of Chuck Berry. In conversation, she assumes you have never heard of her.

Aaron Riley: There Will Be Resolution This Time Around Against Shane Nelson
Aaron Riley will be fighting Shane Nelson for the second time at this Saturday's UFC 101, but don't tell Riley it's a rematch. The experienced lightweight out of Seattle lost in 44 seconds at UFC 96 in March against Nelson when the referee intervened in a stoppage universally agreed upon to be premature.

UFC still dominates MMA
After Fedor Emelianenko signed with Strikeforce, I wrote that he was a game changer, and that the combination of the heavyweight champion of MMA and the best women's division in MMA made Strikeforce a major player in the sport. But I should also acknowledge something that should probably go without saying, but sometimes goes overlooked among hard-core MMA fans: The UFC still completely dominates MMA.

Fedor Emelianenko to Strikeforce, UFC Declares War, What Does It All Mean?
Well, the Fedor has hit the proverbial fan, or should I say the fans. There is debate as to whether or not this is a game changer. Michael David Smith says yes: I've long believed that any MMA promotion wanting to compete with the UFC needed to do one of two things: Develop the best women's division in the sport, and sign Fedor Emelianenko.

The Consequences of War: the UFC Money Drain Will Soon Make Strikeforce its Primary Target
Strikeforce made a big play today by signing Fedor. But what did they get, and at what long term cost? Fedor Emelianenko is a superstar among MMA fans, but the costs of using him have also sunk numerous promotions he's worked with since Pride collapsed. His PPV record is mediocre at best; his best sales performance against Andrei Arlovski would be a complete and utter disaster for even the worst UFC show.

WEC 42: Frank Mir on 'Phenomenal' Takeya Mizugaki vs. Jeff Curran
Former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir will be the color commentator for WEC 42 Sunday night on Versus, and all this week he's providing his insight into the WEC fights. Today I ask Mir about Takeya Mizugaki vs. Jeff Curran. Michael David Smith: The last time we saw Takeya Mizugaki was in his loss to Miguel Torres at WEC 40, in one of the fights of the year. How do you think he matches up with Jeff Curran? Frank Mir: I think that is a very exciting fight. Both guys have excellent hands. Jeff might try to be a little bit of a grappler in this fight, but I don't think it's going to go to the ground much. I think we're going to see a very explosive fight, with both guys going at it. I don't see this fight going to the ground or going the distance.

While most of the attention over the past couple of weeks has been on Affliction’s downfall, Fedor’s dealings with the UFC and subsequent signing with Strikeforce, and the UFC’s first foray into Philadelphia, World Extreme Cagefighting has gotten lost in the shuffle a bit. But come Sunday night, when the No. 1 bantamweight fighter in the world, Miguel Torres, defends his belt against the No. 2 bantamweight fighter in the world, Brian Bowles, everyone will likely remember why much of the talk around the WEC lately isn’t just on the show immediately ahead, but it’s expansion plans for this year and beyond.
